You are mistaken. :D That's Buckethead, because some of his parts are still on the album.

Tedesco, since you are too much of a wimp to do a ban bet, I'll take you up on an avatar bet. You will have the best Axl Rose avatar of all time when it comes out. For how long? 6 Months?.

The bet was for one month. You're adding five months to satisfy your "male" curiosity. :D

I really enjoyed the leaked songs from a few weeks back. Is the full album out?

Nothing beyond the leaks. Word is over the last 15 years theres like 40 or 50 actual completed songs that could be used to make a few more albums. I suppose that would all depend on how this album does.

"Street of Dreams" is a strange name in comparison to "The Blues." I guess I'm just used to that song being "The Blues."

Damn I got excited when I saw the thread and thought the album had released Sega Saturn style. Should have known the thread would be years old :lol

Why has this thing taken so long? Legal troubles? Everything I have heard off it sounds good. I think a lot of us knew this thing would finally be released this year when they announced that whole Dr. Pepper thing.

This sums it all up:
In 1997 Todd Sullivan, who was then a talent executive for the company, sent Mr. Rose a sampling of CD's produced by different people, and encouraged him to choose one to work on "Chinese Democracy." Mr. Sullivan says he received a call informing him that Mr. Rose had run over the albums with a car.

I ove this quote too:

The singer had encouraged everyone in the band's camp to record their ideas for riffs and jams, hours and hours of song fragments that he hoped to process into full compositions. "Most of the stuff he had played me was just sketches," Mr. Sullivan recalled. "I said, 'Look, Axl, this is some really great, promising stuff here. Why don't you consider just bearing down and completing some of these songs?' He goes, 'Hmm, bear down and complete some of these songs?' Next day I get a call from Eddie" - Eddie Rosenblatt, the Geffen chairman - "saying I was off the project."

Very nice, the tracklisting that I was using had the same first four songs and works *really* well. Surprised There Was a Time doesn't close the album.

Nice to see Riad and Catcher both on the final album... those are strong tracks.

The sound is different in someways and Slash or no Slash, it's a great track.

I'm very excited for this album. Sure it's a little silly it took a long time, but
hey if Axl can deliver a full album of great material I could care less.

Rumor has it he has like 3 full CDs finished, so looks like it will be a couple of good
Christmas' for us Guns N' Roses fans... :D

It's a good song, but not sure it's the best choice for the first single.
I agree it's the wrong song. Axl isn't making a lot of good choices beyond actually releasing an album.

"IRS" was ALWAYS the perfect choice of a lead song for anything they are doing. It sounds modern, it sounds like classic Guns hard rock, and Axl is yowling like 1991 Axl Rose on that song. It's also a brilliant song. Chinese Democracy the song is uninspired rockery. Every promotional effort the band is doing is showcasing songs that dont' sound like Guns N' Roses and songs where you simply can't identify Axl's distinct howl.

Their promotional efforts really should be leaning towards the great songs on the album, not the weird artsy crap; i.e. "IRS," "Better," "Street of Dreams (The Blues)," and "There Was a Time," rather than "If the World," "Shackler's," etc.

Too bad about the choice of single....
Ah well.
I know WHY they did it; they wanted to release something that's hard rocking first (typical 80s metal release schedule, rocker-ballad-rocker-ballad-ballad), and in addition, they wanted to release a track titled Chinese Democracy because it solidifies the fact that the album is really coming (allegedly).

But after 16 years since your last release of original material, you should release your best song immediately.

GnR website updated: http://web.gunsnroses.com/splash.jsp

Press Release is out:
MINNEAPOLIS, October 22, 2008 – Best Buy and Geffen Records announced that one of the most highly anticipated albums of all time, Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy, will be available beginning Nov. 23 at Best Buy and BestBuy.com on CD, vinyl, and digital downloads. The title track, the first single from the album, was released to radio today, October 22. Chinese Democracy is the first album of new material from one of rock’s most influential bands since the 1991 simultaneous releases of Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II.

“The release of Chinese Democracy marks a historic moment in rock n’ roll,” said co-managers Irving Azoff and Andy Gould. “We’re launching with a monumental campaign developed by Gary Arnold and the Best Buy team that matches the groundbreaking sound of the album itself. Guns N’ Roses fans have every reason to celebrate, for this is only the beginning.”

“Chinese Democracy is one of the most highly anticipated albums in music history, and Best Buy is thrilled to deliver this explosive and previously elusive release to Guns N’ Roses fans. Longtime fans will be rewarded for their patience and loyalty to this great band, while a new generation of fans will be blown away,” said Gary Arnold, Senior Entertainment Officer for Best Buy. “Axl Rose is one of the most dynamic and gifted writers and performers in modern music. Best Buy is excited to work with Axl to make the release of Chinese Democracy THE musical event of 2008!”

“Guns N’ Roses is THE premier American rock band,” commented Steve Berman, President, Sales and Marketing, Interscope Geffen A&M Records. “Partnering with Gary and everyone at Best Buy to release one of rock’s most anticipated and legendary albums is truly a moment in music history. We’re thrilled to be able to announce that Chinese Democracy is coming, it’s coming this year, and it’s coming to Best Buy.”

Produced by Axl Rose and Caram Costanzo, the album, which will be released on Black Frog/Geffen Records, includes 14 tracks. “Shackler’s Revenge” debuted September 14 through the Rock Band 2 videogame and “If The World” can be heard in the film Body Of Lies, which premiered on October 11.

Chinese Democracy is being released in three formats: CD, Vinyl LP (with a free digital download of the tracks), and as a digital album. Pre-orders at www.BestBuy.com/chinesedemocracy begin today.

The mix sounds completely strange; it's almost like it's shifting from stereo to mono. It could be just the stream though or me just being used to the leaked version. I think Better would have been the best choice for first single.

The main GNR site (linked above) has a high quality stream of the new mix of Chinese Democracy. I guess they weren't kidding about the 9-song leak being a tour mix.

I actually like some of the work that Thal has done; he said he had to add an extra rhythm track to a lot of the stuff to make it more "raw" and sleazy sounding. His track is better than the main rhythm track, although harder to hear.

I understand what you mean, but look at it this way....

Gn'R has been gone for basically 17 years. They need to come back to a really rockin' song. "Chinese Democracy" is similar to WTTJ in that there's the build then BLAM. It's a great song and I really like it.

"Better" is definitely a great choice for a single and in my estimation right around 11/23 they will release it as the single. Let the title track rock people's faces then release a more poppy cross-over track like "Better" to the general populace when the popularity lamp is burning the brightest....

so let's see...2008, 2018, and 2028 then? :p

I heard some leaks from before the new guitarist joined and haven't paid any attention since then. I enjoyed those songs, but didn't commit to them to memory so this will be a pretty "new" experience for me.

I think better would have been their best bet.

Given we've heard 10 of 14 tracks, you'd be wrong.

It's not great, but there are some excellent cuts.
