Overwatch - Review Thread

I just couldn't get into the beta. I spent about 20 hours and used all the available characters, but it got repetitive for me, even when switching heroes often.

Just seemed like a F2P game with the lack of content and characters. Was it at some point?

I really like the game, but it feels like an off-brand TF2 to me. I guess that's because I spent so much time with TF2 and this game is VERY similar. So most of my gripes are in how it's different than TF2 (the classes are almost all simpler in Overwatch, for example).

Still, I expect Overwatch to evolve into more of its own thing given time. The characters that play the most differently from the TF2 characters are my favourites so far (D.VA, Zenyata, etc.), I expect that as time goes on and they add alternate weapons or more characters things will improve (until it eventually becomes a mess like TF2).

Jason Kidd murdered my dog in cold blood!
Here's how I decided:

Do you have friends on PS4 that would play this game?

Yes: PS4
No: PC

PS4 version is technically sound, nothing to worry about there.

Honestly, I felt a bit burned by Diablo 3 on PS4. It was a great game, but just less than teh PC version (and had hackers all over the place).

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
I was debating about getting this... The reviews make me want to get it on my PC. $40 isn't too steep, but I'm not great at fps games. Will the community tear me a new one if I am really bad?

Overwatch is one of the most accessible MP competitive shooters yet made.

There is less focus on twitch precision(well for a good chunk of characters) and more on pure utility, mostly understanding skills and abilities. There is no inventory to manage, no load outs, no external gimmicks that give anyone special advantages. Just the characters and their skills...those with more practice will garner an understanding of the play style will survive longer and likely offer more to the team for sure. Still, the game is so simple to learn that anyone can jump in and find lucky streaks can occur.

Everyone pinned Battlefront as the 'casual' friendly competitive shooter. While that is true in a sense, the game was just one giant meatgrinder where you never felt really as an integral part of the battlefield drama. Just pure attrition duels where you hope you can pop a few enemies before the eventuality of being squished yourself. Overwatch is an entirely different beast ad one of the most friendly shooters ever devised.

Overwatch on PS4 uses dedicated bnet servers, unlike D3 for PS4.

I believe the content and patches for consoles will be the same as PC too.

Just play one of the many classes where aiming is optional! Don't worry, worst case all kdas are hidden, so nobody has ammunition to start being a jerkbag over.

Cant wait to play later. I still dont know what characters to pic
Not my original joke lol idk if this was posted in other threads :p http://krudman.tumblr.com/post/144061129044/we-are-overwatch

This joke is becoming more tiresome than the 'it's dat boi' meme and is usually a sign of people not really understanding what makes a joke humorous.

It's like Simpsons jokes post season 15. Stale and borderline annoying.

You should like go outside or something. Posting on an ehtusiast forum about how much you don't know about a game comes off as attention-grabby. You could learn about the game by clicking an Ad on the PS4 (I'm pretty sure theres at least one Overwatch ad there) instead of waiting for a reply about it.

But, if you're so inclined to not use a lick of common sense:

Overwatch is a 6v6 online only first person shooter in the same vein as Team Fortress 2. 21 heroes. Four game modes across a variety of maps, free-post launch content and is pretty big in the porn scene.

There. That's overwatch.

oh wow

Character shit was stored locally so I believe people could tinker with their characters... unlike D3 for PC which was server side.
You mean backup the save to restore it after??? I won't call that hacker... more like cheese?
To have some kind of hack PS4 needs to be jailbreaker, no? That why I was surprised... PS3 can be hacked but I was not sure about PS4.

A lot 10/10... Well, I've tried to get into it since alfa, had my decent fun but it just didn't click for me. It's just shallow (gameplay, content wise) and that comes from someone who has spent shit tons of time in Destiny's Crucible and MP Call of Duty.

Have fun guys, I'm burned out on it after several dozens of hours.

EDIT: My only problem with this game is its fanbase though, just try to say something negative about OW and most of them will burn you alive...

I've had it 24 hours and I'm feeling it. The game is great and enough to sink into for hours, simply because the moment-to-moment gameplay is stellar. But I don't think the game has as much depth as it appears to, and that's perfectly fine.

Counterpoint: The game is simple to learn difficult to master. Every time you think you've learned all there is to learn, you'll find out you actually didn't know anything. This is the sign of good 'hardcore' design, because it makes it unintimidating for beginners. Trust me, I've been playing it for over 6 months, you don't know ANYTHING yet.

Really? Because TF2 achieves a similar effect through its weapon customization system. They're different but the two systems achieve similar gameplay.

Edit: didn't see you say vanilla TF2, heh

The main thing that Blizz gets right that TF2 gets wrong though is that you can look at a character, and know EXACTLY what they do. They don't have to worry about "Oh, but weapon A in combo with weapon X make a bad combo" or anything when designing this because heroes are designed holistically with their kit. The first round of TF2 updates were fantastic, now if I started playing I would have no fucking idea what any of the opposing team would be doing or what their weapons did, and I would have to figure out which ones they're using every time I fight them as well. It's a mess. This would be like if there were actually just 5 DOTA heroes and you had to figure out what abilities they had chosen from the pool of 1000 abilities every time. I would argue they achieve significantly different gameplay for this reason. The abilities are FAR more interesting and specialized than TF2 weapons, because you can do crazy shit like 'well, what if this person could fucking alter time backwards, and teleport in any direction, and drop a bomb' and actually just make that totally balanced, readable, and fun. None of those mechanics have to exist outside of that specific setup.

Game is super polished so I'm OK with that but not so much depth. It has the Heroes of the Storm simplified approach to the genre which makes it more accessible. Time will tell if this will help them in the esports scene.

That's exactly how I see the game as well from the beta. Can't wait to get the full game (Amazon ruined my shipping :( )

The need for protracted unlock progression's to determine depth is the long lasting damage COD has had on mp shooters. The depth in Overwatch comes from the fact that any given match has a ton of variables depending on skill, map, character choice and team composition. There's a purity to OW that something like Evolve could have really used.

People in fact, did exploited the PS3 saves, then transfer them to PS4.

You can't even say the word "depth" without extensively playing it. Depth is now just a buzzword throwing around for the sake of "having an opinion". "Depth" is something you understand after tens if not hundreds of hours of playing.

Seriously. There's nothing better than making mid match character switches to completely swing the game in your favor.

yes you are now the meme chairman

I resign.

Right, but vanilla TF2 operated around the idea of having multiple classes that could do different things but weren't completely locked into a certain playstyle, and it was a asymmetrical relationship (ala no CTF in TF2 just like in OW). OW takes this great concept and makes it better with abilities that feel good for the characters.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, TF2 has had CTF since it launched in 2007.

Comics, serious business!
I really don't understand the lack of depth argument. If you're saying OW has a lack of depth--which you're certainly entitled to say--then the average shooter must have the depth of a hair. You have a team of 6 that can choose from 21 unique characters (with 1 or 2 weapons/alternate fire and 3 abilities) from 4 different classes. The stuff that can arise out of this is well, endless.

Is this game actually legit or is it GTA IV 10/10 levels?

It makes a great first impression. Its very easy to play, so even Polygon can play it and access its depths, for what thats worth. It has an artstyle that radiates likability, with any hint of rough edges sanded off for maximum accessibility. Even the music is like, the platonic ideal of generic hero action. Its SUPER polished, from its controls to the UI to the sound design, to its matchmaking. You level up and get loot boxes that give you cosmetics for your favorite characters

Its all very pleasent, and you play with your friends and you all have a good time cuz the wins and losses, Kill/Death ratio just doesnt matter at all.

Sorry to keep on bringing up TF2, but it's an apt comparison here: the game had 6 maps and 9 characters at launch, and I played it for hundreds of hours back then, always learning new tricks and strategies. If Overwatch has 12 maps and 21 characters, I can only imagine the possibilities.
