Looks like no one ever made a topic about this. Who else is going?

The Pitchfork Music Festival is a three-day event showcasing over 40 of independent music’s best bands and artists on three stages. With so many blockbuster festivals gouging their attendees out of absolutely obscene sums of money, only to confine them in uncomfortable, tight spaces and skimp on basic necessities, our goal is to do the right thing: That is, to create a reasonably priced summer music festival that provides an overwhelmingly positive, comfortable and fun festival experience for both attendees and musicians.

Webcast available at http://www.pitchforkmusicfestival.com/

Date
Friday, July 17, Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19.

Location
1501 West Randolph in Chicago’s Union Park at the corner of Ashland and Lake.

Hours
Friday: 4pm to 10pm. Saturday and Sunday: Noon to 10pm. If any tickets are still available, the box office will open on July 17th at 2 pm, and July 18th and 19th at 11 am

Not seeing Beirut on Saturday? Big mistake.
I honestly don't have any familiarity with them. I'll definitely catch the tail end of their set at the very least as we make our way back for The National.

Fucking Grizzly Bear vs. Mew is tough, but I would see the latter.

And why in the world would you skip Friday?

Meh, my girlfriend and I don't really care about any of the bands and it's after a work day. We'll see.

I like Mew more but it would involve going to the other side of the park and giving up any semblance of a chance to be sort of close to the stage. I have seen the Flips live already so it wouldn't be a huge loss, but I'd still rather be closer. There's some stuff that won't carry over on the screen to be sure.

Heard of Fucked Up but never made any effort to get into them. I really don't mind skipping them at all. Honestly, the less I am in the heat the better as P4k is less equipped than Lolla is for fighting the sun. The good thing is that the weather is supposed to be a bit cooler this year but it might rain. :(

Strong love?

The National are great.

EDIT: Grizzly Bear vs. Mew?

Grizzly Bear. I like Mew's portfolio better, but all of the live shows I've seen by them have been awful.

The National are soooooo good live. I've seen them twice (2005, 2008) and both times it was an absolute experience.

Meier, if you can't unload your Friday night tickets, at least go see Built To Spill. Epic live show.

The National is the best band.

(And yes, I realize there's no qualifier there.)

I'll be there Saturday and Sunday. Here is my schedule, but I'll catch a few other bands here and there:

SATURDAY, JULY 18
8:30 (B) The Black Lips
7:30 (B) Matt and Kim
6:30 (B) Lindstrøm
5:15 (C) Yeasayer
2:40 (B) The Antlers

8:40 (A) The Flaming Lips
6:15 (A) M83

1:45 (C) Frightened Rabbit

Heh, okay, you get a pass and a box of cookies. To be fair, I don't even know who the Antlers are, so who am I to judge?

So, this is basically a Flaiming Lips concert and enough other bands wanted to see them so they let them go on too? Sounds fun : )

Sounds Like a great festival, wish I could be there...to see the Flaming Lips!

EDit WTF PBR? I clearly need to update my hipster cliches because I have never seen anything I would call a hipster drinking a PBR. It's not trendy, it's just good beer (longneck bottle only please)

Uh, how come Radioclit is not listed as playing? Best reason to go.

edit: nvm they are performing as Very Best. Whack ass time!

Kinda regretting not getting a friday ticket since I'm not doing shit tonight, but I have to save money and I paid way too much to see sonic youth a few weeks ago.

umm, you'd hit bingo (or fill up the whole card, aside from the beer) while driving around to find a parking spot. if not, then definitely while walking to the show. :lol

yeah, it's pretty popular around here...though old style is my shit beer of choice. by the time you're at the last inch, they're both equally awful though.

Chicago? I know Old Style is very popular there. I know this sounds lame but seriously... PBR cans and PBR bottle are like 2 different beers. I used to scour liquor stores in Kansas because they would get a case of bottle (when you couldn't get them everywhere) and practically hide them , but now that I live in Colorado, they are on shelves

yeah, Chicago and yeah, everyone gets cans for parties of course. Not bad stuff if you chug it fast while it's cold. Some bars have it in bottles too...it's usually what I get, since it's usually the special.

and this webcast is pretty good. Would love to see Yo La Tengo live sometime (their own show in a bar, no festies for me please! :) )

Chicago is ALL about their PBR. Go into any Wicker Park/Ukrainian Village bar and they are almost guaranteed to have PBR on "special" for $2-$2.50 (perfect for you out-of-towners going to PFMF: you're a mile away from the "hipster cental" of Chicago!), or Hamms. Old Style is more around Wrigleyville/Lincoln Park, really, or on the south side... basically any "baseball central" area will have Old Style as the house beer. My favorite bar in the UV has PBR on draft for $2 every night. I can't drink the stuff (gives me heart burn), but it's nice, and all other drafts range from $2.50-$4, and there is no mixed/hard liquor drink there that costs more than $4. It's great.

I'm not going to PFMF this year. The music is just really meh, and to see all I want to see I'd have to go both Sat and Sun, and I'm not paying that much to see just four bands. I'm bummed I'll miss Mew, Beirut, Lindstrom, and Grizzly Bear, but they roll through town enough that it's not a huge loss.

All these bands are bands I wouldn't want to see at an outdoor show too...I usually circumvent the fest somehow. Last year Boris played a real show at the empty bottle (as opposed to the 20 minute fest show) and I just watched Yo La Tengo's whole set on the webcast.

I'll go when they host the Pavement reunion next year. (wishful thinking!)

Pretty good lineup, but with no My Bloody Valentine, I don't think I will bother.

And before anyone says, well the point of a festival is to see a bunch of bands... I am broke and it's a long drive. None of the days are interesting enough for me fork out that sort of money.

Lava Lounge used to have specials of 1$ PBR and free bacon, RIP Sizzled.

Oh shit. Wish I had known that. Whiskey Road up on Damen used to have all you can eat bacon on either Monday or Wednesday nights, but that place closed up shop pretty quickly. At least Crocodile has $2.50 PBR and free pizza on Fridays, haha.

Exactly! It's not so much the line-up that bothers me, really, it's just most bands sound freaking awful at an outdoor show (Grizzly Bear, Beirut), and coupled with the horrid sound at previous PFMFs they sure aren't winning me over.

Wish I had gone to that Boris show last year. I lived, literally, around the corner from the Bottle until the end of this May and had no excuse not to go, but I found an excuse (I was lazy). I'm pretty surprised none of the bands this year are sticking around and doing a smaller venue gig, there are usually a handful of bands who do that, or at least come back within a few weeks. I was definitely expecting Lindstrom to play at Smartbar or maybe even Sonotheque.

i've skipped them twice when they were in town and the last time was simply because they stopped by a few days after pitchfork's glowing review. i didn't want to be that kid.

Don't be that douche bag. That's a stupid reason for not seeing a great band live. I'd rather be that kid than that douche bag.

Anyway, I'll be getting there a little before gates open today, I want to hit the shirt stand right away. I hope it doesn't rain today.

We actually didn't end up using our tickets last night... heh. Some friends we met up were raving about it though.

Ended up seeing Beirut -- quite an accompaniment to say the least. I checked out Ponytail since our friend was interested... honestly, I just don't see how anyone can listen to this kind of music on a regular basis.

I heard good things about the Beirut set, but I think the Matt and Kim set was by far the most intense and lively out of all of them yesterday, and most likely the entire festival. I can't believe how much they've blown up.

After the set ended I met up with a friend who knows Matt and Kim and I got to meet them. I can't believe how nice and down to earth they are. We were invited to their small, invite only afterparty where Kim was doing a DJ set with one half of Flosstradamus. I sadly couldn't go, but meeting them was enough for me.

Saw Yeasayer, Beirut and some of the National. All solid, but Beirut put on a real fine show. It made my nipples hard a few times.

Oh god someone said they're good, don't go see them!

i don't understand how people let this shit get to their heads. and no offense, but people who are really into the image thing with indie/underground/experimental music just make everything really uncomfortable when they try to assert their hipness at social gatherings...

sorry for the rant :lol

maybe i just hate hipsters? especially hipsters who have no reason being at a show other than having read a score next to an artists name on some website earlier in the week. it's called the pitchfork effect for a reason and it has the potential of ruining the vibe of any show, especially hardcore and metal ones which thankfully aren't "scene" anymore.

anyhow, i need some impression on jesus lizard pronto and an estimate on how many minutes his feet stayed on the ground.

I guess I just go to shows to be with friends and enjoy the music without interrogating everyone who is there and pigeon-holing them into vague social groups that have no definition, but which are usually judged by one's fashion.

Who gives a shit about why other people are at a concert? People have to discover bands somehow. I check out music that has great reviews and sometimes I even find that I love the music.
