Just thought I'd post my first impressions.
First things first, I could never get into fighting games before but this game does a great job at trying to boil the game down to the rock-paper-scissors formula that they've all sort of had by making combos generally fairly easy to get. I think the game could do with a more extensive combo tutorial (Most characters have only 1 or 2 remotely difficult ones to pull off and there's only like 8 listed) but I'm sure given time the best ones will be found out and it won't be hard to look up online. Also I'm really digging the new characters. Been playing Lucario and Gardevoir. Luke actually plays fairly similarly in concept to Shotos so people familiar with Ryu and the like will understand him fairly well. Didn't play him THAT much but he seems fairly well-rounded. Gardevoir is more of a keep away character with a plethora of projectiles and defensive options. I hope there isn't anyone that can force her to approach though because she is extremely slow and has no good aerial approach options. There's a lot of intricacies with her though. I think the lynchpin of her kit is her ability calm mind, which she can activate into 4 different moves, including a teleport, a projectile, and a really powerful counter. On top of that using calm mind also boosts one of her other specials Stored Power, turning it from a fairly mediocre attack to her most powerful move with enough charges. What I like about Pokken is when you go into the moves section it gives a brief description of its special properties and recommends when you should use it. It sounds so simple but it does a great job helping you understand what use each move has, compared to something like Street fighter where you have 12 different grounded options, many of which have similar properties. I feel like I'm really improving quickly playing the game and I'm intending on sticking with this one.
That being said, there are a couple things that are really bugging me so far. I've been trying to practice duel phase combos in training which is why it's annoying as hell that the game keeps switching to Field phase after a couple hits. I get that is what would happen in a normal match but it would be nice to be able to lock the training into a specific phase you're trying to practice. Also practicing the character's supers is really annoying as well since you can usually only use it once per time you activate synergy, which means that in order to use it again you have to wait for the meter to run out and then reactivate synergy. These two problems really hinder the training mode and make it a bit harder to practice. Also your "Helpful" friend whose name I can't forget won't shut up. The VA isn't terrible but she's the only voice you hear for 90% of the game and it gets old super fast. Fortunately you have the option to reduce or remove her dialogue during matches, but even in the "Reduced" dialogue she barely shuts up since she says something whenever something significant happens, and it also doesn't help she only has like 2 lines for each thing. Also the way the game handles local multiplayer is extremely detrimental to the competitive health of the game. (It requires you to own $750 worth of gear plus 2 different TVs to get it playing at 60 FPS) Seriously the massive inconvenience to play this game at it's optimal settings in person might just be enough of a hurdle to prevent a scene from developing. And unfortunately I don't think there's some magical patch that can fix this either.
Hopefully the game gets further development. If it does here's my wishlist:
1. More robust Training mode. Seriously not being able to lock Phase changes really puts a damper on being able to practice things.
2. Give more control over what your partner says in matches. I don't mind her voice in moderation but during a match there's more time when she's talking then when she isn't. It would be nice to make it so she only says when your Support/Synergy gauge is full.
3. Obviously further balance changes are always welcome, as well as additional offline game modes and maybe a harder combo mode.
