I rarely post in PoliGAF just because I don't feel intellectually qualified to talk. With that disclaimer out of the way, if Obama does come out in favor or gay marriage, it could be a calculated move at keeping Romney from being able to move to the center. If Obama whips up ten tons of crazy from the far right, Romney will be too busy pandering to them and condemning Obama to appeal to moderate republicans and independents.

I readily admit that my head may be up my ass.

Think downticket. It doesn't matter if Obama edges left on this if it sends every swing-state conservative democrat shrieking to the right.

Congres won't attempt to do anything about gay marriage on a federal level for a while, anyway. Obama can't keep kicking this can down the road, he needs to address his feelings on the issue now regardless of how it works legislatively. Hundreds of democrats across the country are probably scrambling to come up with an answer to their stance on the issue right now, so it may cause some trouble there, but I really don't care. It needs to happen eventually, might as well be today.

Yeah there's a large voter impact if Obama comes out in support of gay marriage - likely due to religion.

My hope would be that most Americans are open minded enough about the subject now but who knows - maybe this is something that still needs a few more years before any president can give their support on it.

Of course, hopefully not lol

I have a truly pessimistic view of Americans when it comes to LGBT issues. Internet people on both the left and right will want to portray this as an obvious decision and something he should have done long ago, but I think that view reeks of privilege and a lack of direct experience with bigotry in this country. I think this is a bold and dangerous political move and has the potential to weaken the President's support. Saying that "the people who will hate this the most already weren't voting for him" is a weak argument and doesn't address the vast numbers of people who you'd think are "on your side" but will be shockingly cruel and hateful when these kinds of issues hit the forefront.

Of course I'd love to be wrong. I want to believe that this will energize voters in the President's favor, but I can't help but feel that it will be yet another issue where: Obama does something, the opposition freaks out, and his own supporters say "meh" at best.

It's not that I think Congress can do anything; as I said before, this is going to be resolved through the courts. But if Obama's endorsement of the issue leads to a more conservative congress than we would have had otherwise, that is a bad thing.

Not without being forced by an organized public.

Correct. Obama's "evolution" occured parallel to rising public pressure on him, which is not a coincidence. I don't really condemn Obama for it; while I'd rather he been ahead of this earlier, I think this is largely how the process should work. I'm glad he has finally crossed the line.

Today is a good day. Let the crazy begin.

People of America are open-minded, but get a little timid when the words Gay and Marriage come together.

No, I actually think that's a pretty great point.

I'm eagerly waiting for Republican reactions.

Twitter has been hilarious.

I liked this one, though, from TPM:

On Fox, anchor Shep Smith showed the ABCs clip of Obama endorsing same-sex marriage, and then offered the following response:

“The president of the United States: now in the 21st century,” Smith said.
http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entries/foxs-shep-smith-obama-now-in-21st-century

Even if they didn't know, they "knew".

I bet they feel even more sure of Obama's Muslim faith, and await his further evolution on the matter.

Just seeing my friends and myself move on this issue rapidly. I disagree.

I was in the civil unions camp. But once youre there the marrage wall breaks down fast. Its a fast process to really realize that stupid ideas were holding you back.

I think this is gonna jump the process forward. Its gonna put it own the table. And when people have different ideas (instead of two guys who don't support it) and one who is gonna explain the pro-equality view I think things will shift. I can see in one or two years equality having something like a 60 to 70 percent approval. What this does is really take off national civil unions. We've got one people that want nothing and one that want marriage. I really cant see people voting on one issue (especially this one) if your not already on the republican's "everything obama sucks camp."

Romney's campaign has yet to issue a statement. They don't know how to handle this announcement. Actually, it's been pretty silent on the Republican side as a whole. Hm.

Cosidering some of the pro-gay rights things Romney has said in the past, he's probably going to fight tooth and nail to avoid talking about this issue. The riled up republicans won't be so quiet, though.

Liberals are returning to their campaign to legalize pedophilia

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=473488

As you can see, new liberal rulings have made viewing child porn legal.

It looks like the liberals are returning to their favorite sexual past time...

Germany's left has its own tales of abuse. One of the goals of the German 1968 movement was the sexual liberation of children. For some, this meant overcoming all sexual inhibitions, creating a climate in which even pedophilia was considered progressive.

If you are a liberal and are into this thing, then I think it is abhorrent. It is only a matter of time until I would get banned for speaking out against pedophilia.

But even if you are a liberal, and don't feel empathy for children, then at least watch this video... of the crimes liberals did to this person's childhood.

Can't wait to see how Romney handles this. There is absolutely no way he can attack Obama to appease the right and stay in the middle.

If he gets drawn into the values and culture war its going to solidify the crazy ass things he did to pander to the right in the primary

Obama might lose some votes but Romney will lose far more if he plays this wrong

If this is what ends up happening then Obama's next statement might as well be "Check".

Just for fun, my local paper's tea partier political cartoonist ran this today:

And yet, there will be an expectation on the right to come out against this full-idiot.

This along with any possible barring of Ron Paul at the conventions, I get the feeling a significant chunk of Republicans will be staying home this Fall.

Well as Michelle Obama would say, today is the first day I feel proud to be an American in my adult life. I didn't think he had the balls, or was a strong enough leader to take this stand in such a close election. Good to see he finally realized the people must butthurt about gay marriage aren't voting for him anyway, and democrats who don't support it (like black people) will vote for him regardless, and will certainly know that Obama can't wave a magic wand and institute gay marriage.

And perhaps more importantly, I get to troll Gaborn nonstop now

Log Cabin Republicans said:
“That the president has chosen today, when LGBT Americans are mourning the passage of Amendment One, to finally speak up for marriage equality is offensive and callous.”
So fucking typical. Can't wait for their Romney endorsement on the grounds that he was... governor when Massachusetts got gay marriage?
