User comment from a conservative blog I read:

Was sifting through a video game website I used to frequent where conservatives are greatly out numbered, my God the level of stupidity that permeated the thread was mind blowing. I couldn’t take it anymore. Between the moron Americans who love Call of Duty but pretend to hate guns and the European fascists who concern troll about American violence while ignoring their own, my head was gonna explode.

Alright, who is it?

Maybe it's this guy

Wish he'd taken some questions. Also wish he's stop saying "Democrats and Republicans" every time he talks about "Washington" not working. The problem right now is Republicans.

On the policy front, Obama says he told Boehner and Reid to break off the tax and UI portion of the cliff and deal with that piece between now and the end of the year.

Really surprised at what Joe Scarbarogh said about the current state of the GOP here no Morning Joe.

Wow, he got a little heated in one of those clips. Ironic, though, that he would lambast the extremists in his party while laughing at the suggestion of symbolically voting for Plan B to increase Boner's leverage.

Gotta keep dat approval rating.

How are we going to get anything done in 10 days when republicans can't get a passing vote through the house on something senate dems woudn't even look at?

How many Republicans are willing to cross the line in the house and vote for Obama's proposal?

I dunno, you'd think we could scrounge up the ~20 or whatever it would take that would be able to take it back to their home states and say "hey, I care about you guys, I did what I had to, and I worked across the aisle to make sure things didn't go belly up."

it's 233 to 200 with 2 vacancies. I believe a R is filling in in SC but I don't know the Illinois. Guessing Dem.

So if it's 234-201, you need 17 GOP to cross the aisle or abstain (after agreeing to discharge or have Boehner force the bill through)

http://www.politicususa.com/obama-drops-hammer-republicans-pulls-fiscal-cliff-proposal.html

So essentially, the GOP has two choices:

A)Give in and give President Obama everything he wants

or

B)Go over the cliff, taxes raised regardless, and the Democrats will essentially dicate what the budget deal is essentially, if they don't want to be tied to their base and primaried.

Glorious.

Pretty much. If they didn't shit the bed last night they be in a better situation, but oh well what the hell....

I would like to think this. I'm thinking the cliff is more likely though. Don't see any reason to believe otherwise sadly.

How does the speaker vote happen? Do Democrats vote too? Why wouldn't they vote for Boehner if cantor had a legit shot? And why couldn't they use their votes as leverage in dealing with Boehner? Assuming that everyone votes.

Also, I was banned for a week =( Did anyone notice? Did anyone miss me? No? Okay =(

Candidates need a House plurality (218) to be elected Speaker, meaning even a small leadership challenge could cause Boehner to lose - at which point republicans would have to select a candidate capable of unifying the caucus.

It's a straight up and down vote in Congress. However, the majority caucus will align to vote for 1 guy to make sure they don't lose since the Speaker of the House essentially controls all legislation and it's not worth screwing that up.

of course, with this current crop, anything is possible. Highly unlikely, though. if Canter makes a coup, it will be in private first with very few defections. Not enough to lose the Speakership.

Glad you're back. Nevermind what I wrote, apparently I was wrong. Still god help us if Cantor gets it.

Technically the system allows for this, but I'm not sure it makes sense for anyone involved. Democrats would probably prefer to prolong the Republicans' struggles by preventing any candidate for Speaker from having a majority, and Boehner might not actually want to be Speaker if the only way to have the job is to obviously be the Democrats' preferred Republican.

The number is right but it's important to realize that that's a majority. Pelosi can't possibly become Speaker without Republicans voting for her.

If this happened it would mean things have really gone off the rails for the GOP.

What did you get banned for? They've been banning a lot lately. I'm kinda surprised I haven't been banned for something.

God I'd laugh if somehow Pelosi ended up speaker. lol

A majority, or a plurality? If it's really a plurality Pelosi could be elected Speaker if the GOP splits their vote and Dems are unified behind Pelosi. The GOP would probably shift gears during the vote to prevent that.

Could be interesting if there is one or more challengers to Boehner and Dems essentially get to be the deciding vote block.

Yeah, I've largely stayed out of the gun politics but they pissed me off with their blaming it on videogames and their brain-dead solution of putting armed guards everywhere. That is just bad bad bad. The could have just kept their mouth shut but instead they stuck their foot in it.

I got "The Years of Lyndon Johnson: The Passage of Power" as a Christmas gift. I'm about halfway through the introduction, but beforehand I was skimming the pictures included in the novel, and one had a man with a protest sign that read, "LBJ sold out to Yankee socialists." Oh, how little things change.

And yet how they do! The introduction touches on Kennedy's less-than-satisfactory political prowess, citing the stalled tax reduction bill and major civil rights legislation. What's said about the tax reduction bill was that Kennedy believed it would cause an economic expansion, resulting in more tax revenue necessary to fund a larger welfare state. Not exactly the current line of thinking today. Well, unless you're in the Republican party. And setting aside any crazy notion of you liking a welfare state.

IE JFK was an inspirational president in over his head and unable to get anything done domestically, so he turned his sights towards foreign affairs - some created by his own will, others that forced him to take action.

sounds familiar

JFK being an overrated president is not new territory. LBJ would have been the modern FDR if not for Vietnam/Gulf Of Tonkin.

Come now, that's not what I was talking about. The lame comparison to Obama was boring. The more you try to troll the worse you get at it. I suggest giving it a rest for a while.

Wasn't a troll but whatever, I'm in the minority with respect to the topic of Obama's leadership; there are a lot of parallels between them . Enjoy the book, it's very good.

(and I'd suggest Nixonland afterward)

Agreed on all points.
JFK was by far the worst Democratic president of the 20th century.

This has nothing to do with conservatism and everything to do with arms dealers trying to maximize their profits.

How was Carter better than JFK?
Carter didn't sell out the civil rights movement and he isn't responsible (at least more than any other president) for the Vietnam war.
Also, Carter didn't freak out and nearly started World War III like JFK did in the Cuban missile crisis.

p.s.
How was Carter bad?

Carter was truly a victim of circumstance; there was little he could do about the oil and inflation situations, and if the mission to free the Iranian prisoners succeeded he'd probably be hailed a hero. Instead he's forever considered a loser and failure.

You'd think republicans would love him in retrospect because he fought to shrink government and attempted to the challenge the "system" and entrenched Washington culture even within his own party.

I'd even go as far as to say had Iran succeeded, we wouldn't have been given the complete abortion that was Ronald Reagan, who presidency has fucked us all the way till today.

Carter's investment in Green Energy could've been fucking revolutionary, but Saint Reagan had to be a fucking asshole.

There's no telling where we'd be, progress wise, had Reagan not been elected.

How did Kennedy sell out the civil rights movements, and how should he have handled Cuban Missile Crisis differently? I don't know enough about Vietnam and him to comment on that, but I recognize how he helped the space program get off the ground, which I greatly admire.

And the best thing you can say about Carter's presidency was that it was inoffensive. He didn't really accomplish anything.
