You think she'd admit she was tabled, if that's what happened? I'm guessing Obama will try to make her NSA

So you are saying that Rice is lying and that there's a conspiracy to table her just to put her on the NSA staff?

Why float the name in the first place? And with no proof, why just conveniently make Rice a liar?

I saw this as breaking news on CNN.

"President Obama will send Congress a scaled-back plan to avoid some of fiscal cliff, GOP and Democratic sources say."

I thought he wasn't going to go for that. Although I'm not sure what "scaled back" means.

Sr. WH official tells me that, contrary to reports from Repubs, president will NOT be sending a fiscal cliff proposal to Capitol Hill.

Looks like a GOP stunt

Really wish that liberal lamestream media would point out that the dems actually won the total vote count in the house, and gerrymandering let the republicans keep it...

Nope. "Bipartisanship"

Strap in boys and girls, we're going cliff diving!

CNN says Democrat sources have confirmed it as well:

A Republican senator said Obama told Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, that the president's plan would arrive on Thursday, and a Senate Democratic leadership member also said that was the approach being taken. Both sources spoke on condition of not being identified further.

I guess we'll see.

WH says NO bill. I shouldn't have used word BILL. But, McConnell aide STILL telling me they were told to expect details of scaled back plan.

I hope this doesn't mean they are going to put this off AGAIN.

No, I'm saying the WH told her to remove her name from consideration so they could nominate Kerry and save face. I don't believe she willingly removed her name, but obviously I have no evidence. She has long been considered for National Security Adviser, and I think that will be her consolation prize.

Keep in mind, there's no way after going over the cliff, that a tax deal isn't done. So your taxes most likely won't go up once it's all through.

Yeah, I think the GOP plan at this point is going over the cliff so they can vote for tax cuts - that's way they don't invoke the ancient curse of the Norquist.
Needless to say this is all fucking retarded.

Your taxes won't go up (outside of the payroll tax). Congress will pass the middle income cuts within the first week of January, bet on it.

Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips on Thursday disputed that President Obama claimed a mandate in November's election, arguing that his re-election victory came over "the worst candidate in history in Mitt Romney."
That is who they picked. And they are fucking delusional if they think Bachmann, Cain, Perry, Gringrich, Paul, Santorum, or who ever else would have done better.

Aren't most on the left confident a tax deal can be done after falling off the cliff? I thought it was the spending cuts that are the scary part.

Pretty sure Alf Landon still holds the crown as the worst 'best they could come up with' candidate for the Repubican party in effectiveness, even if we believed their story.

Half the spending cuts are defense, so I don't really see a strong defensive position for the GOP there either. In fact, Obama can probably offer a near 1:1 deal of tax cuts to spending increases by counting the middle class taxes.

They were huge reason the military cuts were included in the sequestration deal anyway.

I really hope Obama can work some magic and get multiple deals done after our trip off.

ok so lets talk about something substantial then. There are "inside beltway rumors" that Hagel may be out as SoD with the backlash as well. This would be two floated candidates where Obama pussied out on because of special interest pressure.

I don't want to go on a rant about PD's Obama being the real Obama after seeing some signs of leadership during the fiscal cliff debate, but its not shining a good light on him at all
I've resisted this characterization of Obama in the past - apart from the 2010 mid-terms, when he really did feel chastened, I think he's far more savvy than any of his critics give him credit for - but I will be upset if Obama allows these zealots to smear Hagel without so much as fighting for his nomination. The Rice situation was understandable: there were legitimate criticisms emerging from the left against her nomination. The Hagel criticism, however, is deranged: his record of diplomatic and geopolitical realism, for which the right has excoriated him under the guise of ethnic animus, is his most important attribute that recommends him for the job. Nominating Hagel would send a strong signal that Obama isn't going to back down on this issue.

I gotcha. But I still think it's more believable that she said, "screw this noise I'm getting out and will be the National Security Adviser. This just isn't worth it."

It'll be a lot easier job for her anyways considering that the GOP won't be staring at every move she makes and questioning every word she uses.

Been on a tablet for a few days which sucks for typing, so I've just been browsing. I'm at my in-laws in Idaho, so you can guess how much political discussion I initiate or participate in (zero). My own family is strong liberal (with a few socialists in the mix). I miss'em.

RE: fiscal cliff. Amazing that Boehner is now blaming the Senate for not acting, when he can't pass his own bill, and refuses to bring up the one Reid passed. The man is a truly pathetic Speaker.

Over we go. Wheeeeeeeeeee!

Why don't you just use the speak feature on the Android tablet so that it can type out the words for you?

You are on Jelly Bean right?

I personally would feel incredibly awkward narrating my posts aloud, especially PoliGAF posts, especially especially PoliGAF posts while enjoying the hospitality of people who do not share my views.

I'm on an iPad and around socially conservative family. Namely, Mormons, in Idaho. I don't want to say my PoliGAF posts out loud. :)

I'll be back home on Sunday and can type freely then (on on an in-law's PC now).

I still think we go over the cliff, but a deal is cut after the new Congress is sworn in.

Actually my in-laws and relatives are reliable D voters, though my in-laws are supporters of things like charter schools, drug testing welfare recipients, etc.

Just cause I've never actually seen this argument: what's the argument against drug testing welfare recipients? That it's a gross invasion of privacy?

For the love of god, please let the Dems sac up and do something about the filibuster.

Not going to happen. Even the "talking filibuster" reforms are too strong for the caucus to pass.

1) Should we drug test everyone who gets any kind of government benefit? If not, why only welfare benefits? The answers lead to ugly places.

2) There's no money to be saved by the government in doing so, as Rick Scott recently demonstrated.
