How is this a debate?! It's more like a political beauty pageant. There's no meaningful discourse, just a bunch of idiots on their soapboxes.

Oh, and the moderators SUCK ASS.

There's pretty much no way to have a well structured debate with this many people, especially given how so many of them are intent on doing whatever the hell they want or just outright attacking the moderators.

None of these things are debates. They're joint press conferences.

The moderators inserting themselves between each candidate and asking separate questions isn't a debate.

A better method would be one question for all, and then a ten minute free for all with moderators only role to queue up the order of candidates responses based on mentions/not talked/etc.

These things are actually possible, I think there were a few even in 1988 when they had like ten candidates.

True, but this is something else entirely. The dem debate was fine under this structure, and even if there were more candidates on the Democratic side, it wouldn't have looked like this. I just can't believe these people are running for president.

The contrast between the Democratic/Republican debates got so much worse tonight. This was an entirely different level of chaos in terms of order.

Exactly.

The callback was like the weakest fact check possible, it had no force to it at all. And I think it was the first thing brought up after the commercial break, which means it's the part viewers are most likely to miss.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the reason why Trump and Carson are doing well is because when Trump speaks, he doesn't talk in word salads like the rest of the clowns do and people can understand him. Plus, he is a self-made billionaire and people probably think they can be billionaires, also.

Then when it comes to Carson, he talks so slow and without a lot of political jargon that a lot of low-education voters are probably able to follow along with him and understand what he is saying.

Kind of an apples-to-oranges comparison, considering Nixon-Kennedy was a general election debate and this is a primary debate.

obviously the 14 man (or however many are up there) debate will be more sloppy, but candidates are giving memorized statements for the purposes of pandering, in between moments when the moderators incite them to take shots at one another. And while I watch all this I'm just remembering kennedy talk about how he would offer ways to improve society, and nixon meticulously talking about the quemoy matsu stuff.
it's a stark contrast, how things can change in the course of 60 years

I really don't want to hear Kasich lectures about education when our state is pissing away millions of dollars on failing (and even fraudulent) charter schools.

From the moderator of the first debate:
.According to rules set by the candidates themselves, each man shall make an opening statement of approximately eight minutes' duration and a closing statement of approximately three minutes' duration. In between the candidates will answer, or comment upon answers to questions put by a panel of correspondents.

I'm thinking the narrative won't be about something "winning" as much as I think it'll be about "the Liberal media; candidates vs. moderators" etc

Personally, I agree, but debates are about perception, and I'm not sure he won on that front. In fact, I don't think anybody won.

I guess we'll see what the polls say.

I think Rubio won the perception game too, helps that the crowd was so responsive to him as any clips of his lines will have loud clapping and applause in them. But then again, I thought Carson was sleep walking through debates and now he's second place so what do I know.

The details of the format are not my point. The quality of the candidates is*

*except for rand and jindal
That's part of what I was saying, do you think most of these candidates could handle an eight minute opening statements and two minute answers/responses to each question?

Exactly. It's like, who the fuck knows at this point. The GOP primary base is so fucked.

Ughhh I am most afraid of Rubio and he did best.

You think him deflecting every attack by screaming the word "liberal" over and over again is going to hold up in the general?

Because that's basically how he won this debate.

Come on, you know damn well there were Rubio plants all up in that crowd! Lol

idk if i can answer that question benji, my ability to give an unbiased answer has been compromised by my fondness for bobby and randy

Rubio didn't win anything except some extra claps. He was a rehearsed bore.
my man.
