But how is that even possible?

Coal mining jobs were killed by natural gas, manufacturing jobs were killed by robots. It is impossible for these jobs to come back.

If the Democrats don't find the answer to that question, they'll be waiting a long time. You can't just leave half the population to rot out in the sticks. I think the answer is probably pretty complicated - subsidize industry using increased taxes on Wall Street? - but it is an answer the Democrats need to figure out.

War Peaceman

You're a big guy.
This. People don't want benefits, per se. Benefits don't leave you with dignity. They want jobs. They want their way of life to be guaranteed. Democrats didn't ever offer that.

The unemployment rate has been reducing month on month on month. The economy has been steadily increasing under the democrats despite republican intransigence.

If the answer is to promise sweet nothings[it is], then that isn't an answer at all.

I'm probably going to have to bow out of political followings for a while. Not to process, but more for my sanity sake. Try to involve myself more in different things.
Move on like you are doing. This can consume you and fill you with hate. Accept was has happened tonight and move on. Trump won and we have our next president.

Unprecedented amount of OT threads being locked right now

God, as a white male who has some financial backing from his middle class parents... I can't even imagine what it must feel like to be a minority in America right now.

We survived 8 years of Bush, we can survive 4 years of this cretin.

I'm going to have to stay off the news for a long, long time though. I don't need to see orange fuck head spouting his bullshit.

Ugh.

I'm sorry guys I did my part, nothing much we can do now except keep on living.

Finding a candidate that does that without facilitating an even more forceful reaction on the opposite side would be ideal.

I dunno of Mr. Pinko Commie could do that, but Unca Joe? ehh, not a complete stretch.

I'm not sure Biden would have won, but i'd say there is a good chance he would have done better.

penis!

Democrats will never win a lying competition against the Republicans.

Democracy in the age of the internet and social media is just very vulnerable to the hijacking of human behavior/psychology.

Her weaknesses are the same, just magnified by 8 more years of shit.

Republicans saw this coming a mile away and have been trashing her non stop. She's been in the news so much I think enough people are legitimately sick of her that it spurred some massive turnout.

I'm choosing to look at this election not as a hate wins election, and more of a "Clinton loses" result. None of it is her fault, but I think I agree she should have maybe not ran with her unfavorables. Still, hindsight is 20/20.

I have faith this isn't what our nation is.

It didn't take a genius to see the immense problems Hillary has as a candidate. She was really selfish to run and the world will suffer for it.

So the question is if it would matter.

If these people are voting FOR Trump, it doesn't matter.

Even in Pa, she won most of the counties Obama won by getting the same votes. Philly turnout was up! She's +3k on Obama there.

She is losing because of rural areas. Voters who don't vote. So does Biden or Warren or anyone else change this? I have my doubts. I think these people fucking love Trump's bigotry.

I mean, if all these people think Trump and the new republican controlled government are going to help them, but then don't, isn't that a perfect opportunity for the Democrats? Repubs can't blame Obama or the Dems anymore.

I guess the name of the game is do what you can to support those that need it and basically get ready for 2020. Assuming that Trump doesn't start nuclear winter I think we can recover.

I don't blame Hillary for not coming out. Everything every Democrat has fought for in the last half century has just been erased. The first African-American President will be succeeded by a bigoted, fascist, pro-Russian puppet. There is no resistance. It happened. No speech can reassure anyone. This is the apocalypse for any even remotely progressive thought.

Something I had the worst feeling about was how Clinton spoke.

"Women, children, families." - she never said men. At least I never heard her say it.

Honestly, I can't blame HRC for not coming out. I'm probably gonna retreat from this whole damn mess the same way I did during the Bush years. "Weapons of Mass what? Ugh, just leave me the fuck alone."

She's a weak candidate but let's be real: she out performed Obama in Florida and did well in multiple other swing states. Her voters came out overall. And she still lost. This is less about her and more about the strength of Trump. And white women being ok with him.

No, I think everyone knew going into it that it would be a problem. I don't think any of us expected the backlash against her to be this strong though.

Never in a million years would I have guessed reliable Democratic firewalls would fall tonight. There's lessons to be learned here.

Anyway, it's been a pleasure guys. This is an awesome community and when I'll come back (in a few months, maybe) I hope to find you all well.

Thanks for the FUCKs and the YASSSes.

Stay safe, peace out. Love and kindness.

They should be making their current service jobs good not bullshitting about days gone by. There's nothing inherently good about manufacturing or mining jobs - in fact they kinda suck! But the benefits that attached were good and that's what people are really asking for.

Possibly? Depends who the Democrats run. If they run "fresh from Wall Street" Booker or Gillibrand, they'll get hammered. They need someone who smells like they understand working America.

Hillary won the states a Democrat was supposed to win. She lost the states a democrat wasn't supposed to lose.

I feel Sanders might've been better? He wasn't bogged down by emails or benghazi. I'm saying this as someone who fucking HATE Sanders supporters.

That's the thing, people didn't flip. The Dems got their base out to vote. Everyone showed up. That wasn't the issue. The issue is an unprecedented number of white, rural voters showed up. People who have never shown up before. They didn't flip, they came out of nowhere. Another candidate wouldn't have fixed that. They came out because of Trump.

Pretty much this. The campaign did everything right and got everyone to come out. No one could have prevented this. Not Bernie, not Biden, maybe not even Obama.

That's why this is scary. The Dems showed up. The Obama coalition made it's appearance. It just didn't matter.

Yep. This is far scarier than dems not showing up to vote.

That is the ONLY silver lining I see. The GOP now controls the entire government. They own any mess that occurs.

Also, WHAT THE FUCK is Podesta doing?!? Dude, just give up. It's fucking game over.

Could very well be, my friend. Platitude, obviously, but we'll just have to wait for the data.

If your scenario is the reality of the situation, then democrats have a serious fucking problem in their hands and yeah, they'll just have to wait for those people to die since republicans will obviously repeat the strategy.

The Iran deal is done too, outright war with them is a possibility now.

I can't sleep cause I'm just non stop thinking of all the horrible things that are about to start happening in just a few months.

Yeah I can't sleep. I don't know if I can drive to work tomorrow

That solution will never work, because (for many reasons) these voters have an inherent distrust in government run ideas and programs advocated by Democrats. The best example is Obamacare - a program so conservative that it was originally cooked up by Republican think tanks (though obviously with some left-leaning goals attached, such as Medicaid expansion and new taxes). Yet there was a massive right wing backlash to that.

Voters who are scared enough of brown people to vote for Trump are also scared of SOCIALISTS.
