I'm catching up on the Sunday shows and I have to say Marco Rubio gave a remarkable interview to Jake Tapper. I don't know why Marco made the mistakes he made but certainly this interview made me understand why a lot of the experts thought he was such a dangerous opponent for Hillary Clinton. He was heart felt, he was earnest, he was real, and he didn't sound calculated at all. I know part of it is him realizing that his campaign is over. But it was still an amazing interview to watch. Also Jake Tapper is on a roll. After that trump Kkk interview, he did another tough interview with Trump and actually made him lose his temper. What an election cycle.

Has nothing to do with Bismarck, but is a direct result of the Weimar Republic and the rise of the Third Reich.

One of the Weimar Republic's big problems was that so many of its parties were opposed to the Republic itself, which eventually made it impossible to form a majority in the Reichstag that was pro-democracy. Particularly once the Nazis and Communists had a majority between them governments became very unstable. Chancellors would not have the support of any sort of majority coalition in the Reichstag and basically depended on the President to get anything done.

I'm getting off the subject here, but East Germany was an interesting case in that it was designed to give the appearance of a multiparty democracy. The People's Chamber always had representation from several parties, but the proportions were, for all intents and purposes, determined in advance as they all ran on a "unity" list which would win 99+% of the vote. Also all other parties were explicitly subordinate to the ruling Socialist Unity Party (which was itself based on a fiction of a merger between the Communists and the Social Democrats when it functioned as a Communist takeover of the Social Democrats).

Sorry for the digression. I'm a bit of a German history geek.
