PoliGAF 2016 |OT3| You know what they say about big Michigans - big Florida

I'm beginning to get a bit concerned here. Lot's of open primaries coming up and Sanders is hammering and driving home his populist message. He will most likely win Ohio and make Illinois super close.

Since the dems have no WTA states, he can't catch up even with close wins. He needs to win 70/30 going forward to change that.

And literally that Cuban answer is going to make the super delegates stick with Clinton no matter what happens. He is basically an auto loss for Florida now in the GE.

EDIT: Also forgot how badly he fumbled the clean energy question just prior. Whole last half was horrible for him. Started very strong but just imploded.

Hrm.

If you have to discuss Fidel, and you're in Bernie's spot, i'd say that the very best you could do is try to drawn a comparison between Fulgencio, ME dictators and american backing, all the while renouncing Fidel, even if in a soft way. But even then... man, dude's gonna need a focus group to fine tune the shit out of that answer.

Kinda disappointing that he didn't have an answer ready for that, it being his greatest weakness and all.

I'm in bushwick and the Bernie supporters at this watch party are super cute. Should I switch sides?

But thou must.

Can't be soft on Fidel with Florida on the line. Raul? Sure, but not Fidel.

I like Bernie and I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm actually glad he's not going to be nominee. He just wouldn't be good for the job. He's an inspiration, not a leader.

I still don't like Hillary.

I dunno. Attacks presidents Obama and Clinton and their policies, and praises dictators. Even I'm a bit shook and I knew that's how he felt. Can't believe it was aired out and he didn't take anything back.

Clinton has not only been through a heated primary against Obama, but has been in the public eye for 25 years. I have no idea what you are talking about there.

Are you seriously trying to equate both parties voters and moderates being the same, seriously?
The argument was about potential mudslinging in a general election contest.

In a Democratic primary, the republican voting south-Florida Cuban vote really isn't applicable.

Yeah, i was thinking of something along the lines of "i am disappointed with what he became", but then you obv gon get hit with the video being from 85, when the dude was in power for a long fucking time already.

Hrm. Yeah. Can't see any good angle, given the realities on the ground. Safest path is simply to pull a bams and say your views evolved, then denounce Fiddy C

Hillary Clinton is literally the only politician in America who doesn't have to worry about general election muckraking when she runs for president. Any muck in Hillary's past has already been raked when she was running for First Lady of the United States. Or when she was First Lady for eight years.

There is no safer person if you're worried about general election attacks.

Wow, what surprises ME? That this is the FIRST time that Cuba video has come up. Something THAT damaging, kept hidden in plain sight this whole time...right on YouTube.

I know it's expected of me as a Hillary supporter, but that does make me scared of a potential Bernie Sanders presidential nominee. That video alone could sink him if the Republicans push it hard enough (and they would)...

...so what the fuck ELSE is out there?

Why wouldn't he be good for the job?

90% of the President's job is military decisions, foreign policy, and administrative decisions. Last 10% is creating a platform for laws (but not really legislating). And with Congress not going to be solid Dem soon (60+ in Senate), he can't really inspire legislation to be passed. especially when some Dems don't fully agree with him.

It circulated last year on a few outlets .. Just Google it.

"What do you think about the Communist dictators of Cuba in the past?"

"Well.... let me say, U.S. intervention is bad."

Did you watch the video?

He praised some of their policies.

The thing is, he's made being consistent such a big thing this cycle, it's his main hit on Hillary, that he literally can't do that without undercutting his own attacks on her. So it's either eat this and hope he doesn't die or completely deflate his own attacks going forward. That's why he had that look on his face, he knew he had no choice.

I don't think it even would've been that damaging if he just would've handled it better. He was clearly legit shook that they played it.

That video clip would be running non-stop in attack ads, especially in Florida, if Sanders were the nominee.

Florida is probably the safest swing state this time around thanks to Donald Trump's rhetoric. The only swing state I'd be worried about is Ohio. Lots of white working-class voters there. That's the only angle Trump has.

Clinton doesn't want to attack Sanders like that because some Sanders supporters are threatening to go nuclear and vote for Trump or against her and are looking for any excuse. Whereas Republicans want to keep it a secret so they can use shit like that full force if he were to be the nominee. I'm convinced there's more damning video or audio clips out there.

The video isn't the problem...it was his answer. He can't refute the attack ad now...

I'm just saying anyone is entitle to change their opinion thirty years later. I'm sure I will if I live that long.

The thing is, how much of Sanders' current support base exists because of his (perceived, at any rate) consistency? The whole "Hillary Clinton just panders to whatever she thinks people want" thing is predicated on it.

It's a little like the furor of Bernie's reparations answer, he promises the moon on everything else, so why not that? He's been perfectly consistent since 1985 on everything else, so why not that?

Similar lines of logic, at any rate. Makes changing positions tough for him.

Trump going around forgetting about the KKK calling immigrants rapists and kicking out muslims, Bernie compliments Cuba's health care and he's toast.

Da Rules don't apply to Trump, you know that.

Besides, all that stuff is gonna doom him in the general, he's only getting away with it because he's saying what a ton of the people on the R side of things are thinking, even if they're reluctant to say it.

Older cubans would vote GOP anyway. Younger cubans wouldnt vote for Trump just because of.
So? Cubans aren't the only ones who hate Castro.

Expect similar numbers for Castro and other dictators in every other state. Sanders would be the dictator-loving socialist. Jesus christ was a mess.

Yea, but combine that with his honeymoon in the USSR and other things Clinton has refused to hit him with. It'd deal a shit-ton of damage.

EDIT: This was only the peak of the iceberg of what will be thrown at him. Clinton's used kid gloves and refused to go for the tender spots. The GOP will have no problem hitting him where it hurts with everything they can find. If this shook him, well that's not good.

What??? No, it is not. No matter if Bernie or Hillary was the nominee. Where did you get this idea from???

Honestly, Virginia is the safest one from Cruz and Trump IMHO.

Guys, Bernie is poison in a general election for a plethora of reasons. You think his Cuba statements are bad? How about nonstop commercials explaining how he intends to drastically raise the working class tax rate to pay for socialized medicine?

Shit, there are probably hundreds of clips like this out there of him saying ridiculous things because, at the time, he never intended to run for president one day. Hillary has been playing with kids gloves because she needs Bernie's supporters in the GE, and no one else has any interest in attacking Bernie (Republicans want him to win, and the media wants a tight race). The dude would get massacred in the general once he actually starts getting attacked.

Hillary's commanding lead in the primary is actually impressive when you consider the mud being slung at her, and the fact that she hasn't fought back against Bernie. Bernie is free to just sling shit and say whatever he pleases to get votes, without blowback, and he's still getting crushed by the Queen.

I'll second some of this - if its Trump they're facing, I wouldn't be worried about it. That vote's locked in more or less one way or another (on both sides). If you're facing Cruz, then it is trouble. I think at this point Trump wants Clinton and Cruz / Kasich would want Sanders.

But honestly; I suspect the general election will end up being swayed on something else that doesn't come out of the primaries. Too short of an attention span.

I'd argue VA is barely a swing state any more.
Virginia is like a D+1 state. It's very much still a swing state. And if the Republican nominee is Trump and Virginia votes a few points more Democratic than the national average on November, it will be less to do with a leftward shift than Trump just being a horrible candidate.

I want to find whoever is coaching Hillary on her campaign finance angles, stick their heads in the toilet and flush several times.

I still can't get over her attaching Bernie to the Koch brothers like WTF

Also I want people to imagine this scenario. Bernie vs Mittens who hijacked the nomination at the convention. They play that video and Bernie defends Castro policies and doesn't back off on it

Rmoney would straight up Devour his soul on stage

The whole of South Florida is staunchly anti-Communist. People from all over Latin America who had fled oppressive socialist regimes. Optics.

hahaha oh yeah, they totally werent running from the right wing dictadorships that the US instaurated all around the region.

People really should be operating on the belief that no swing state is safe regardless of who is on the republican side. I'm in Pennsylvania and there is a LOT of red in this state and there are times were you really don't know where fall. Some of the stuff that might work in Ohio will easily work in large parts of this state. They should be going all out in these states even if it looks like they won't flip. Maybe MI last night has my paranoid but I rather be that then lose this election.

I assume the Castro thing is big door that Bernie did NOT want known. Dictators and all. How unprepared for it was he? Shocked or OMG? What was Hillary's expression when it was shown? Poker face or did she slip up?

I'd say it's a combination of both. NoVa has been steadily holding more influence in the state and is more democratic. Trump as nominee would amplify VA's slow leftward shift though.

It won't be one if Trump is the nominee. Last poll had Clinton +17.

I distinctly remember Bill going over there back in the day.

He got hit with it in 1992 if I remember it right. The issue is getting anything to stick to Bill is damn near impossible and it's not something they can hit Hillary with. It didn't deal much damage because there's wasn't much information and it didn't play into a larger narrative. Bernie's done and said enough so that the GOP can build that narrative, if they haven't already.
