Tonight cruz's non-endorsement of trump will probably overshadow whatever else happened on Monday, tuesday and even today.

Pence is giving a really good speech.

But the story of tonight is Cruz. The two biggest stories of the convention - Melania's speech and Cruz's - contradict Trump's claims of being a genius who will hire the right people and negotiate the best deals. He hired a sub part ghost writer to write his wife's speech, and gave Cruz a prime time speaking slot without ensuring an endorsement commitment. Amateur hour.

He even called into question whether, as president, he would automatically extend the security guarantees that give the 28 members of NATO the assurance that the full force of the United States military has their back.

For example, asked about Russia’s threatening activities that have unnerved the small Baltic States that are the most recent entrants into NATO, Mr. Trump said that if Russia attacked them, he would decide whether to come to their aid only after reviewing whether those nations “have fulfilled their obligations to us.”
Trump says he'll only back NATO members in conflicts after analyzing whether they've sufficiently satisfied their own obligations to the US.

I die everytime they brag about balancing state budgets.

EVERYBODY DOES, THEY HAVE TO!
Shh. Yesterday the Indiana delegation bragged about having more workers in its state now than any other time in history. Because you know, that's how population growth works.

It's sooooooo obvious that Pence didn't write this himself. That shouldn't make me terribly sad, but it does. A VP candidate should be able to write their own most important shit. This feels like a convention speech from about 1992. Not that I'm complaining. Very traditional, gemerally positive, lots of anecdotes, zilch on policy, etc.
Conservative principals work everytime you put them into practice.

uhhh Louisiana?
Kansas?
England?
United States 2000-2008
Well, Indiana has somehow managed to not entirely ruin itself. If there were a single governor that could boast like this it's him. Well, probably ND, but still. In terms of popular current GOP governors Pence ranks well. Not sure HOW they haven't ruined themselves, but it implies there's some intellect somewhere in his administration.

Trump won every battle against Cruz and still loses the war. I don't know if this is a bad or good timeline, but it's funny.

They should ask Pence since he's apparently going to be the one who decides all this.

This speech needs to end so everyone can talk about Ted Cruz.

lmao, I still can't believe a convention this poor is happening in my lifetime.

It's better than that. His campaign had a copy of the speech at 6 PM today and let Cruz go on stage and deliver it. It's not just not an endorsement, it's more or less a direct endorsement of "anybody but Trump."

Knowing how theres next to no diversity in the audience, hearing the attempts to tell minority groups whats good for them comes off even more offensive than it normally is.

What the hell happened tonight with Cruz. I was drinking while watching a Red Sox game and the Revolution game at the same time

So, basically, what had happened, right?

Cruz comes out and gives his speech. Doesn't endorse. Tells people to vote their conscience. The delegation from some states tried to chant CRUZ. So the delegation from New York started booing him. He kept talking over the boos.

Trump randomly comes into the arena while he's speaking. The screen behind him goes out. The lights fuck up in the arena. He was supposed to speak for 9. He spoke for 23 minutes. Throwing the schedule off, and knocking Pence out of Prime Time.

They had to escort him and his wife out. And, at one point, physically restrain a donor from physically attacking Cruz.

The best thing about what Ted Cruz did tonight is it's going to get under Trump's skin so, so badly. He won't let this go. He will drag this story out way longer than it would otherwise last. Three weeks from now once people would have otherwise stopped talking about it he'll be tweeting insults about Lyin' Ted.

Donald Trump himself will be the one to ensure Ted Cruz's non-endorsement is the defining moment of his Republican National Convention.
