So my mom is freaking out about the market. She has her retirement plan wrapped up in mutual funds and the market going down really worries her. She's only 45. She called me panicking today and I had to remind her that she was only going to lose out if she sold (or if a company in her portfolio declared bankruptcy or something) and that the best thing to do would be to remain calm and ride it out. And not to look at the market if it makes her sick. This is right, right? IF she's not going to need the money for ~20 years, there's no humanly way she should pull, yes?

Just for my own personal edification, if you could set up a 401k with dollar-matching right now, you should, yes?

A question for all those fans who have been following Obama's campaign for a long time:

Can you recall any faux pas made by the campaign or actions that taken that you didn't like?

Has he really run a flawless clean campaign?
And received these responses:

FISA cave. And assuming that because they had won Iowa, New Hampshire would simply follow suit. They basically glided into NH after Iowa, did a few high profile stump speeches and expected a win. It was nice to see that attitude change.
GhaleonEB said:
Obama has made some poorly worded slips (sweetie-gate, bitter-gate, etc.). I disagree with his FISA position, and wish he were even more progressive on gay marriage.

But from an organizational perspective? I can't think of anything. Everything is playing out the way Obama wanted: he spread the field of red states, his massive ground game registered millions of new voters, leaving public financing is enabling a huge spending advantage and he's surrounded himself with the best campaign managers and strategists out there.

Every time I've questioned a strategic move of Obama's, I've been proven wrong.
Steve Youngblood said:
I was disappointed in June, after he secured the nomination, when he backed off on his rhetoric against NAFTA. Not because I have strong feelings one way or another about NAFTA, mind you, but just because I did find it to be a moment where he was like every other politician out there. During the Ohio primary, both he and Clinton were trying to appear to be as against NAFTA as possible to win the state, but once he secured the nomination, it became clear that this was more pandering to a specific demographic than in a true belief one way or another about the issue.

As a Christian, the whole Revelations/Armageddon thing is on a completely different level of "crazy" than the creation stories, Moses, etc. At least those can be viewed as parables, meant to teach lessons.

Revelations may not even be referring to the end times, and EVERYONE interprets it in their own way to scare people (and it has been used this way for almost 2000 years.) Really dangerous stuff.

That's what I was thinking. Which would render that talking point entirely meaningless.

We're second nominal, fourth from last effective.

The guy either doesn't know what he's talking about, or he's being intentionally dishonest. Businesses in the U.S. pay one of the lowest effective tax rates in the industrialized world.

More importantly, Obama isn't planning on raising corporate taxes anyway, so he's basically making a straw man argument.

Absolutely.
The dollar matching in its own is enough to offset the market tumble.

You can defend the conservative ideals. You can defend small government ideals. You can defend libertarian ideals. They are all defensible positions which can be backed with political theory and what not.

But how can anyone defend someone like Palin? I mean, seriously, for a moment, separate the ideals from the person representing the ideals.

Yeah, I'd agree on both counts, particularly the second, but as soon as things recover she should start to make more conservative moves.

Yes, do it. You do not have to put the money into stocks or a mutual fund (at least that is true in most modern 401K plans) and you can keep it in a money fund, which is now guarantied by the US government. The employer matching is free money to you, so you should take it.

Your mom shouldn't pull anything.

If you get a company match, set up a 401K. Although pick a safe amount of investments for the time being, and when the market picks back up you can go with more risk.

I'm only 20 and I'm a student, so I'm not getting a 401k just yet. I was just curious because my friend made a comment (who is 27) about wanting to start a 401k but wanting to put it off because of the market tumble. I thought what he said sounded off, so I wanted to check with the 'xperts.

Dear N****,

If your family isn't already supporting Barack, it's time for you to have "The Talk."

With so many rumors and misperceptions out there, it's incredibly important that you sit down with parents or other family members. Tell them who Barack is, what he stands for, and why you're supporting him.

Not a bad idea. I've seen some of you guys talk about your families and I guess a lot of people could use this.

There's no reason not to invest in a 401(k) right now if you can afford it.

I think I was the only one on poligaf who flipped out about Samantha Powers. Read 'A Problem from Hell' a while back and it forced me to rethink my own views on American obligations/leadership during humanitarian crisis. It's good stuff, and I have her latest book on de Mello on queue.

It was crude how quickly Obama dumped her after the 'monster' remark, but I'm hoping she manages to regain some influence in a future Obama administration.

Another gem from rr-bb.com, on the topic of factcheck.org

It's not a great site. It tends to be very Obama-friendly.

All of my liberal friends rebut using FacTCheck.

It takes a little work, but you can rebut FactCheck. You just have to dig a little because FactCheck doesn't go very deep. Look for good, deep columns and articles that go beyond the nice sounding stuff that FactCheck deems good enough.

Palins Repeatedly Pressed Case Against Trooper
Ms. Palin has denied that anyone told Mr. Monegan to dismiss Mr. Wooten, or that the commissioner’s ouster had anything to do with the trooper. But an examination of the case, based on interviews with Mr. Monegan and several top aides, indicates that, to a far greater degree than was previously known, the governor, her husband and her administration pressed the commissioner and his staff to get Mr. Wooten off the force, though without directly ordering it.

i hope the troopergate official report has the same conclusion

Were you raised in an evangelical/pentecostal church? Do you know much about pre-millenial eschatology? Can you quote Bible verses?

If you can't, then I'm afraid you won't last very long. Forums like these have about a thousand different subtle shibboleths that allow them to distinguish their own from an outsider coming in to troll.

I want to share something with GAF that was forwarded via email around the offices at work today.

BEWARE!! THINK HARD & USE COMMON SENSE!10:25AMOct 9th 2008
To All My Friends, this is long, but every important, please take the time to read it.

This election has me very worried. So many things to consider. About a year ago I would have voted for Obama. I have changed my mind three times since than. I watch all the news channels, jumping from one to another. I must say this drives my husband crazy. But, I feel if you view MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News, you might get some middle ground to work with. About six months ago, I started thinking 'where did the money come from for Obama'. I have four daughters who went to College, and we were middle class, and money was tight. We (including my girls) worked hard and there were lots of student loans.

I started looking into Obama's life.

Around 1979 Obama started college at Occidental in California. He is very open about his two years at Occidental, he tried all kinds of drugs and was wasting his time but, even though he had a brilliant mind, did not apply himself to his studies. 'Barry' (that was the name he used all his life) during this time had two roommates, Muhammad Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid, both from Pakistan. During the summer of 1981, after his second year in college, he made a 'round the world' trip. Stopping to see his mother in Indonesia, next Hyderabad in India, three weeks in Karachi, Pakistan where he stayed with his roommate's family, then off to Africa to visit his father's family.

My question - Where did he get the money for this trip?

Nether I, nor any one of my children would have had money for a trip like this when they were in college. When he came back he started school at Columbia University in New York. It is at th is time he wants everyone to call him Barack - not Barry. Do you know what the tuition is at Columbia? It's not cheap to say the least! Where did he get money for tuition? Student Loans? Maybe. After Columbia, he went to Chicago to work as a Community Organizer for $12,000 a year. Why Chicago? Why not New York? He was already living in New York.

By 'chance' he met Antoin 'Tony' Rezko, born in Aleppo Syria, and a real estate developer in Chicago. Rezko has been convicted of fraud and bribery this year. Rezko, was named 'Entrepreneur of the Decade' by the Arab-American Business and Professional Association'. About two years later, Obama entered Harvard Law School. Do you have any idea what tuition is for Harvard Law School? Where did he get the money for Law School? More student loans? After Law school, he went back to Chicago. Rezko offered him a job, which he turned down. But, he did take a job with Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland. Guess what? They represented 'Reza r' which is Rezko's firm. Rezko was one of Obama's first major financial contributors when he ran for office in Chicago. In 2003, Rezko threw an early fundraiser for Obama which Chicago Tribune reporter David Mendelland claims was instrumental in providing Obama with 'seed money' for his U.S. Senate race. In 2005, Obama purchased a new home in Kenwoo! od District of Chicago for $1.65 million (less than asking price). With ALL those Student Loans - Where did he get the money for the property? On the same day Rezko's wife, Rita, purchased the adjoining empty lot for full price. The London Times reported that Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi-born Billionaire loaned Rezko $3.5 million three weeks before Obama's new home was purchased. Obama met Nadhmi Auchi many times with Rezko.

Now, we have Obama running for President. Valerie Jarrett, was Michele Obama's boss. She is now Obama's chief advisor and he does not make any major decisions without talking to her first.

Wher e was Jarrett born? Ready for this? Shiraz, Iran! Do we see a pattern here? Or am I going crazy?
On May 10, 2008 The Times reported, Robert Malley, advisor to Obama, was 'sacked' after the press found out he was having regular contacts with 'Hamas', which controls Gaza and is connected with Iran. This past week, buried in the back part of the papers, Iraqi newspapers reported that during Obama's visit to Iraq, he asked their leaders to do nothing about the war until after he is elected, and he will 'Take care of things'.

Oh, and by the way, remember the college roommates that were born in Pakistan? They are in charge of all those 'small' Internet campaign contributions for Obama.

Where is that money coming from? The poor and middle class in this country? Or could it be from the Middle East?
And the final bit of news. On September 7, 2008, The Washington Times posted a verbal slip that was made on 'This Week' with George Stephanapoulos. Obama on talking a bout his religion said, 'My Muslim faith'. When questioned, 'he made a mistake'.

Some mistake!

Now the BIG question - If I found out all this information on my own, Why haven't all of our 'intelligent' members of the press been reporting this?
A phrase that keeps ringing in my ear - 'Beware of the enemy from within'!!!

** my brother just got this .. and forwarded to my inbox 2 minutes ago with the subject heading: 'Interesting.' LOL

Bush doesn't get nearly enough credit. He's a fairly bright guy. He's NOT intellectually curious, which is his biggest problem. He operates on gut instinct instead of information, which makes him dangerous. He's more than capable of making an intelligent, reasoned decision, though. His SAT score is proof of that.

Palin is just dumb. I figured slightly averagish, which is not intelligent enough for a VP. If that SAT score is right, she's likely below average. It's no wonder she's not allowed to say anything other than rehearsed talking points.

will the party be re-built in this manner, with real intellectuals re-taking the helm of the party?

I'd love to see it happen, but at the same time I wonder what happens to those who are currently the base of the party. The ignorant rednecks.. the unbending evangelicals.. the xenophobes.. the naive "liberals-are-gonna-take-my-gun" fanatics.. - where do these folks go? For some reason, I don't see them simply shutting-up and fading into the background.

I liked the Biden e-mail too:

The McCain campaign is on the ropes, and sadly it's no surprise they're responding with attacks and outright lies.

I've heard some pretty unspeakable things in the past few days -- deeply offensive smears that we'll hear over and over again until Election Day.

John McCain and Governor Palin are setting a new low in presidential politics with their dishonorable campaign.

This election is likely to make the right's base even more committed that a centrist stance does nothing for them electorally, and will go back to full fundie mode.

Behold the Democratic majority.

You mean calling Hillary a monster? I agreed :lol

I've defined my support through monetary contributions, if he does something shitty I withold cash. not that he needs my 20 bucks.

Some tings that have caused me to hold back, Fisa, campaign finance flip flop, McCain can't email ad.

Generally he then wins back my support by being kickass in the debate, giving good speeches, or laying out solid policy positions. I remember once I made an angry post about his economy plan lacking regulation for the shadow markets, then the next day he started talking about new regulation for the financial markets.

Hey guys. I just saw it on this page right here and it reminded me that I meant to ask a question in regards to Barack Obama. I know that earlier this year he voted to extend what Bush is doing in regards to FISA and the like. I also know that he did it as part of a broader package. My question is this: Has he indicated whether or not he would continue utilizing the bullshit that the Bush administration is doing in regards to illegally tapping telephone lines, reading email etc?
