WTF why is Castro commenting on Obama?

http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hbFv6qypnTK5Vi2ej3lLhpftj2xwD93OMJ4O1

HAVANA (AP) — Fidel Castro says a "profound racism" in the United States will stop millions from voting for Barack Obama in next month's presidential election.

The ailing, 82-year-old former Cuban president says it is "a miracle that the Democratic candidate hasn't suffered the same luck as (assassinated leaders) Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and others who harbored dreams of equality and justice."

Castro's written comments were published by state media Saturday. In them, he insists a "profound racism" exists in the U.S. and that millions of whites "cannot reconcile themselves to the idea that a black person ... could occupy the White House, which is called just that: white."

Castro also described Republican presidential candidate John McCain as "bellicose."

I can see the GOP ads now. Obama "endorsed" by Fidel Castro, Too risky for America :lol

It's not happening. It violates Duverger's law.

Duverger's Law only applies in the long term. There are tons of examples of parties splitting or third parties arising for one or two electoral cycles. Roosevelt splitting the Republican party when he started up the Progressives, the Populists winning a lot of the Western states in the late 1800s, segregationist candidates splitting off from the Democrats in the South during the Civil Rights movement. Even the GOP in its early years was formed mostly from Whig defectors, that's just the one case where the new party won out and they killed off the Whigs.

That said, none of the two-party systems broken there had a nearly 150 year long history behind them, so I think a third party breaking out big now is a lot less likely than it was in the past.

Not that I think it's going to make a huge difference, but in a place where Bush/Cheney '04 bumper stickers are still rampant (central Texas), I've seen more Obama stickers and yard signs around than McCain stickers and signs. Texas will still go red obviously, but the fact that Obama has this big of a following in the buckle of the bible belt is very impressive.

texas will revert back to blue soon, mark my word. definitely not during this election, but sometime within the near future.

While on the Palin-bashing train, is anyone concerned that she basically is adopting "Hockey Mom" as a description? That's a CANADIAN term of an American word. Granted, I understand why Alaska would use it, but it's not an American word, for a party so strongly focused on proving Obama is against America.

After tonight, I think we can safely conclude that not only is she a shitty mom, but that Hockey is virulently allergic to her and vice versa.

I'm pretty sure he already sort of endorsed him a while back. I mean he stopped short by calling attention to the fact that he was obviously aware that if he actually endorsed anyone, it would hurt that person more than help. But it's not hard to read between the lines.

That quote is probably about as far as he can go to "help". It basically boils down to "I bet you guys are too racist to elect Obama." So the best way to prove Castro wrong is to elect Obama (I guess that's the nonsensical counter to the nonsensical attack).

Well, skipping the inevitable socialist bullshit, McCain's attitude toward countries we currently dislike is to dislike them more, rather than patch up relations. Which president do you think would get us Cuban cigars back faster?

He's not "helping" with the older Cuban vote in Florida :\

Can't believe I agreed with something Castro said. Especially since his brain has got to be halfway out the door by now.

I'm sorry Amir0x, but this is probably the most likely point in the entire campaign (less a hypothetical presidency) for Obama to be assassinated. (1) massive momentum swing is just settling down, and with it an onset of panic/rage of the most extreme, (2) many open air events every single day, often announced days in advance, (3) a professional but surely tired secret service detail, given that they've been on more or less high alert with Obama for 10 months now, and he's got one of the most grueling schedules (if not the most active, in terms of number of stops) of any candidate in history.

It's a very rational fear.

Anyone have video of Matthews and Buchanan on Friday's Hardball? Apparently it was very heated and MSNBC doesn't have it on the site

Heh, capital gains tax cuts proposal from McCain.

This race is getting pretty ironic!

I wouldn't say so. He already changed his policies and sold out so much to get here. It's pretty clear he cares more about being president than actually giving a shit.

Dunno if it has been mentioned on this thread today, but just saw on CNN that Palin once again disagreed with McCain on policy publicly.

McCain said that he doesn't buy the North Korea thing..

Palin says she supports Connie Rice and her decision to remove North Korea from the Terrorist nation list..

Interesting.

So far, McCain's newest policy proposals have been to buy up everyone's mortgages at a loss and refinance them and to eliminate RMDs for now. Total garbage, basically. It'll be hilarious to see him suddenly rolling out proposals one after another to try and grab some more newscycles.

Grant Hill just was talking on the bench during the game and 'wanted to ask Charles if he still is a Republican'. Reggie got a chuckle from this.

That had been a misconception of him and Chuck said he is voting for Barack.

No video, but Buchanan defended the scare tactics and said it was legit, Mathews went after him on it and got Pat to admit that it was race baiting trying to prove Obama "isnt one of us" and that Pat still thought it was legit.

After Pat realized he fucked up he called Mathews a surrogate for Obama.

Wait? RMDs :lol

What the hell?

Most people in retirement have to take more money every year than the RMD just to live. This only benefits the very wealthy that have so much money that they dont need their savings in their retirement accounts at all.

Removing RMDs is just going to set up tax shelters for the wealthy to pass money on to relatives without anyone ever paying taxes on the earnings.

Exactly, that's what I said when I heard his plan. He revealed it in a speech to people and was met with a lot of blank stares.:lol I think he only proposed it because it sounds better to people who have no clue what RMDs are.

So is anyone on GAF considering ignoring the election results and waking up to find out who our next president will be the next morning like I am?

What will you guys DO on election night? *shudders*

I'll be DVR'ing election returns at home since I'll be manning the polls in butt-cold Pueblo, Colorado. I don't think I've fully comprehended how cold it is going to be during my stay in Colorado, considering Texas weather in late October is relatively mild and pretty nice.

Huh....according to TPM, the "Obama is an Arab terrorist" questioner from that McCain town hall actually got that idea from a pamphlet that she got from another volunteer at the local McCain office. And she herself had been distributing that pamphlet too......something's odd.

These morons are probably passing around the printed email chain letters.

I don't know why, but I must have watched the behind-the-scenes of the DNC video at least five times. I keep coming back to it and showing it to my friends and family. I get a sense of the of the Obama family and the Obama/Biden relationship. It's endearing and heartwarming, especially in those "frivolous" moments in which you see them as normal people.
