Proliferation (or lack thereof) of "yayer!" & how Nintendo exploits Splatoon culture?

I hope you all have your wallets ready for Splat2n and the amiibo line that will follow. Cant wait for Spike and Sheldon amiibo.

its like ive wandered into popgaf again

I would mostly prefer that Nintendo doesn't go overboard with the exposure for Splatoon, to the point that it gets obnoxious. The concerts make sense in Japan, given how big a following Splatoon has there, but I don't think they'd be that well received in the western world. I definitely would like to see NoA or NoE do open tourneys though.

Like some people already mentioned, the Splatoon Splatfest would be fun to have, though they might stand out a bit. I took a look at the Pax Prime Splatfest shirts, and while I would definitely like to have them, they definitely stand out. I would be interested in Nintendo turning some of the in-game shirts into real life shirts (which they did do for awhile for some of the basic tees). I generally prefer wearing casual clothing that's usually one or two colors, and it's fine if there's a pattern as long as it doesn't look too weird or complicated.

Here are some examples which might reference Splatoon quite clearly but imo are generic enough to look like regular clothing:
Straw Boater

Takoroka Mesh

Here are some examples of Splatoon clothing that I would never go into public with:

I'm surprised we haven't been utterly bombarded with Splatoon merch as is. I'm shocked how little merchandise i've seen. Took them forever for the amiibo as well

there's more in japan, though not crazy amounts just yet.

I've probably played less of than an hour of Splatoon total and I know of "yayer," and "woomy." How could so-called fans miss these in the game or online?

Is this a sign Nintendo isn't doing enough with Splatoon?

They need to launch a dedicated merchandise line and cartoon for the IP. That'll be enough in book.

So do people want to fuck these squids? Is that what is happening here?

Well I briefly saw a thumbnail of what looked like a guy jizzing on a picture of one...not something you forget quickly...so...yeah, I think there are people that want to do that.

The fact that so many who have logged so much time into the game still have no idea what you're talking about is telling.

Yes, that includes myself.

Well in all fairness, there are people out there who want to fuck just about anything and everything you can find, so while it's likely a true statement, it's not exactly a factor.

So throw your hands in the air
And wave them like you dont care
And if you like fish and grits
And all that pimp shit
Let me hear you say oh-yayer

I've been playing the game for almost a year now. I'll take a break from the game but I keep coming back. With that said, this is the first time ive ever heard of "yayer" and "woomy". Unless that's some weird localized name for Callie and Marie.

Have you seen the amount of merchandise released in Japan?

It dwarfs every other Nintendo property except Pokemon and possibly Mario.

I was just looking at AmiAmi and there are various key chains, scott tape, puzzles, etc.

Some merchandise:

Plushies:

Real Life Splattershot:

Also the following was available at Best Buy in North America over the holidays along with 8-bit Mario shirts:

Finally Splatoon is set to join World of Nintendo products this year with a squid plushie and 2.5" figure to begin.

Or it just means you're not paying attention to the fan community? I'm as casual a Splatoon fan as they come, yet even I have seen 'woomy' used on forums, social media, and in the comments of Splatoon videos. 'Yayer' is from the final boss battle.

Seriously, how have so many of you not encountered these words?

"Woomy" is the sound the girl squid kid makes when you talk to one in Booyah Base. It's a big joke/meme/thing on YouTube and Tumblr.

I certainly don't remember "yayer" from the final boss, and yes, I am not a big Tumblr/Youtube guy. I haven't seen it on NeoGAF outside this topic or on any of the gaming news sites I visit. Nor in the game itself.

I play Splatoon regularly and have never heard those two terms.

I mean, "Woomy" I recognize as one of the Girl Inkling vocalizations but I've never seen it spelled out or anything.

I was curious and so I checked. "Yayer" is not from the final boss fight, NA or PAL versions.

It's probably some random line Callie or Marie say during one of the levels, but why would anyone remember that? It's not some re-occurring catchphrase or anything.

I come to Neo Gaf when I want to discuss and read about videogames. I don't go to other places especially not Tumblr. Nor would I burn my all my brain cells reading YouTube comments.

You're both right, it's not used in the final boss fight. Agent 1 does, however, use it in the story mode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo-cerDc3tw&feature=youtu.be&t=526

I prefer when the girl says something like "Chupaki!" which sounds exactly like "Chupa aqui!" which is Portuguese for "suck it!"

So do people want to fuck these squids? Is that what is happening here?

Fun fact: There was dirty art of the Inklings within minutes of it first being announced. It was all over image boards at the time, when many people impressed at the volume on content being created in literally just under 10 minutes.

Short answer, probably yes.

"Yayer," was said by one of the squid agents during the game's final battle iirc (haven't played much myself, only watched), and it hasn't been that popular. "Woomy," gets used a lot, but Nintendo could stand to make "yayer," a thing (e.g. start Nintendo Directs with "Aw yayer! It's Direct time!" or other Splatoon lingo).]
I've completed the final battle multiple times,
played the game lots,
looked at lots of threads on Splatoon, art sites, etc,
I'm watching a Squid Girls concert on Youtube right now...

...I have absolutely no idea what the heck you're going on about here.

Stay Fresh

EDIT: Also, you missed that the Callie and Marie Amiibo are coming out this summer.

Stay Fresh is the only Splatoon lingo I see around outside of Splatoon, and it existed before the game anyway.

They'd make a killing if they let people buy their in-game loadouts as real clothes. I'd love the varsity jacket.

yayer is a throwaway exclamation that is said like once. It may not even be in both English localizations.

Woomy is just writing out a sound effect, and doesn't even appear in the game in written form.

I don't know why anyone would recognize woomy without seeing it online. Furthermore, I'm shocked anyone remembers yayer at all. I haven't even seen that one in the more memey parts of the Internet I visit.

Al the more reason for Nintendo to further popularize them

Whatever happened to Outkast? I remember them being extremely popular in the early 2000s then it seems like they just fell off the face of the planet.

Never thought Yayer was supposed to become a catchphrase, just showing Callie being bubbly.

For what is worth, Splatoon did make people embrace "Fresh".

After that vid was posted I know remember what yayer is lmao. Like, that's just corny lingo and super forgettable.

They could do more in the West regarding merch when the inevitable sequel drops on NX in a year or two.

I kinda wish Nintendo would dip their toe into fashion a little and do some Splatoon shirts and hats and stuff. I don't really like wearing many gaming-related shirts because I find a lot of them kinda loud and garish, but some of the Splatoon gear is pretty subtle with its reference. I could see people walking around wearing some of them. They should totally consider licensing them to some T-shirt manufacturer.

Geart_Headgear_Takoroka_Mesh.png

I hate mesh hats but this one always looks so good.

I want an official version of the Red Vector Tee.

Geart_Clothing_Red_Vector_Tee.png

(I completely forgot "yayer" was in the game, though.)

what the fuck? you're lamenting the fact that a corporation isn't forcing jargon or memes down people's throat?
what the fuck is going on here?

Also yayer sounds absolutely atrocious and I don't think I could ever take anyone seriously who said yayer, in real life or online.

If I recall, Nintendo did give away that hat at certain events (I think they had some at EVO 2015).
