I think they're doing fine especially with the impact covid has had on game development especially if you compare their output to their competitor. I can easily imagine that it is a problem that the competition have a userbase of 100 million when you have a userbase of 20 million.

And they already tried the PS5 exclusive strategy. What did they gain from that? Returnal seemed like a niche title with less than a million copies sold. Ratchet got som praise for the graphics. Both games were mostly forgotten by the majority.

Because of PS4 releases Sony will have a huge userbase again in 2022, we’ll see and hear more people talk about the games, we’ll see more games win GOTY awards, we’ll see more games on sales top lists. Just wait and see. It’ll feel like the king has returned.

The three biggest titles coming out for PS5 in 2022 are just PS4 games with PS5 enhancements and to be frank, that is super disappointing for a year 2 of a console's life cycle.

Let me know if I'm mistaken, but has Sony ever released a major first party title on the previous generation after launching new hardware?

In PS5 with games like Demon's Souls or Astro. And a few months later with Ratchet and Returnal. Big AAA games now take around 4-5+ years to be developed and cost around $200M to be developed + almost the same in marketing.

Combined with having an active userbase of over 80M users in the previous gen, and considering games like these ones being released this year were started to be developed in 2017 or 2018 when the next gen hardware, its specs are even less engines taking advantage of them didn't exist, and when this generation transition is very easy to develop games as crossgen compared tot previous ones.

To release these games, or the next ones until their userbase migrates to next gen, to make these games next gen only instead of doing it with smaller ones would be a retarded market decision. Because in terms of designs and visuals the game would be exactly the same but they would keep a ton of millions on the table.

The supply of the current hardwares are pretty bleak at the moment, so it makes sense that they are still supporting the bigger install base.

this is what I don’t get, we keep hearing how these consoles are outselling last gen. Yes, there is a chip shortage and they could have sold more but supposedly they are still doing massively better than last gen. So where’s the fresh new big budget IP?


I personally think it’s the working from home and Covid that’s fucked it all. People think working from home is better but does that work for a huge studio where you could just get up from your desk walk down a a hall or a few cubicles and shoot the shit with the art team, or design team and work through ideas and problems?

for how powerful these consoles are supposed to be it’s true that we are getting pretty much the same old games, either creativity is being squandered in some way (working from home etc?] or developers re just far too comfortable and can’t get risky ideas signed off by the management.

Nope it'll be on GP which will mean it'll have inflated player count numbers because subs will try it out even if it's garbage but it's sales will be far worse than if it were a retail only game. The only people hyping that game up are xbox fanboys, we haven't seen a second of true gameplay yet, we saw part of an in game cinematic and that's it. Bethesda hasn't put out a good game since Skyrim, Fallout 4 was a borefest and Fallout 76 sucked rocks.

I need to take a break from the forum for stating the truth? Sony trying to buy timed exclusivity is a rumor it was never confirmed and even if they had it would have been a waste of money just like it was for the other two games they bought timed exclusivity for. Starfield will not be as big as some of you seem to want everyone else to believe it will be, especially now that it's only on one console and PC. It could end up being a good game if Bethesda gets their crap together but based on their last two releases I'm not convinced that the quality will be there.

People were hyped for Starfield long before Bethesda was bought. Bethesda’s games are also more popular on PC and that’s where most people will play Starfield and do mods and all that cool stuff. It gets hyped because it’s the first new IP in over 25 years from the biggest RPG dev out there who made Skyrim, the most sold RPG ever and winner of 229 GOTY awards. Tbh what does that say about ratchet? Horizon looks a gen behind the matrix so the fact that it looks better than ratchet, demon souls and returnal just goes to show how underwhelming Sony’s first party efforts have been this gen.

I mean Xbox is going to have more first party next Gen games than PlayStation in 2022 and that is crazy to me after Phil went on and on about cross gen back in 2020. As a PlayStation fan who railed against Phil’s comments, i feel pretty fucking dumb and scammed right about now.
