Quantum Break PC performance thread

Well I guess (and hope) they will force the UWP on developers for XBO. That should help the platform to grow faster, certainly after the Xbox store will have been merged into the Windows Store this summer. 🙂

But "forcing"things on developers hasn't really earned MS any goodwill with devs in the past....Parity Clause has made some devs very vocal against it...You think devs would be fine with being forced to create a UWP instead of just developing the game the way they want?

Ok, upping the resolution via the trick mentioned by some users does help with the aliasing/blurry textures issues - the image gets much sharper.

However, the game is basically unplayable at 1440P and that's with a GTX 980Ti; I reckon the average is far below 30FPS.

Someone should make a PSA thread or something. Lots of people might still not be aware of the disaster this is. I bought it not knowing about the problems until I came in here.

Playing on all medium settings, getting above 30 fps don't know how much exactly but there are some crazy ass stutters going on.

Specs being: A GTX 970 4GB GPU, i7 4790K clocked at 4.5 GHZ and 8GB 1600 MHZ RAM.

Will be upgrading to Pascal and 16GB of RAM soon though, other than this though the game is playable atm, going to play more to see if the framerate or stuttering becomes completely unplayable.

Should I even bother with the PC version of this game with the following specs or will I be better off just going with the XB1 version?

EVGA 03G-P4-3788-KR GeForce GTX 780 3GB 384-bit GD
Intel Core i7-4770K Quad-Core Desktop Processor 3.5 GHZ 8 MB Cache BX80646I74770K
16 GB RAM

XB1 version sadly. PC port is a mess.

Get it in XO.

So, of the four games that have kicked off the Windows™ Store™ as a serious PC gaming platform, all of which are big budget, high profile releases, only two of them have come out running as they should. And one of those games is available to play on Steam for an objectively better experience.

I know this is a terrible, inflammatory statement that's ignoring lots of actual facts, but a point still stands: The Windows Store has gone off to an absolutely horrible start as a PC games platform, and I don't think games on it deserve any befitting doubt on that going forward. Let's hope Microsoft and their game development teams stop shitting the bed soon.

It's hardly inflammatory.

Plainly poor treatment of the PC release deserves to be described as such.

Steam got off to an incredibly awkward start too, everyone hated it. Look where it is now. Maybe MS are trying to replicate that?

Store also lacks basic features like no preorders/preloading, and I dont see a download rate indicator or estimated time left when downloading

If i could go back in time I would have preordered on x1 to get the free PC code, and just played on X1 hoping to come back to PC version down the road if they fix it

I never imagined my PC would run the game poorly in comparison to X1 (32GB RAM, 4790K, Titan X)

Don't you get the PC version free with the Xbox version?

The difference is that Valve was the pioneer while MS is jumping in a second time 12 years after steams launch and still fuck a lot of stuff up, they didn't even learn from their earlier trainwreck.

The argument of whether this is a native UWA or a Xbone port is largely irrelevant.

For most people this will just be a powerful reason to avoid games that come from the Windows 10 store.

And yes, Steam was rough when it first launched. But that was 12 years ago and expectations have changed vastly. PC gamers simply won't be patient like that anymore because there are lots of other games from lots of other digital distributors vying for their money. And those games and stores currently have a much better track record than MS.

Damn I bought the game on the Xbox digital store which was more expensive than a retail store that I know to get it on my PC too but it looks like this is a terrible port :(

I can't remember HL2 having any such problems on launch.
Actually...HL2 was pretty terrible at launch. Stu...stu...stuttering like crazy on most PCs, inconsistent frame-rates (few could actually hit 60fps), long loading times, and more. It ran like dogshit on my PC in 2004. Yet, at the time, that was somewhat more common in PC games that pushed cutting edge visuals.

Though, in comparison, Doom 3 was rock solid at launch. Demanding, but very well optimized.

Yes but you have to buy the xbox version digitally. You can get the xbox version quite a bit cheaper at retail (of course that doesn't come with the PC version)... if the PC port is bad no reason to pay the extra $

It ran really well on my 6800gt/P4 3.0ghz.

Not 60fps all the time but plenty playable at 1024*768, max settings.

How quickly people forget what games are like on day one. At least Remedy have that on their side here. So long as they can fix the major issues, everything should be good. I forget exactly what issues Alan Wake had at launch, but I'm sure it had some problems with SLI at the very least.

Msaa outrage mostly

I don't really understand the way it would work, but i guess there would still be a good degree of freedom for developers to choose how they develop their game. The only thing changing would be that the final state of the game will be in UWP app format.

Microsoft has no interest in making the development process harder. If anything, UWP is an idea of making the development process easier to develop as well as making it easier to develop a game for multiple platforms, from smartphone over PC to gaming console.

I wonder if DX12 can cause this problems..

According to the article it's not DX12 but UWP.

UWP forces either the full or the 0.5 * refresh rate of your monitor (16.67ms --> 33.33ms for most people). So if the fps go down from 60 to let's say 59 fps (example from the article) the engine drops all frames in between and directly drops down to 30 fps.

I eventually got a P4-3.6 + 6800gt that winter but that was very high-end. I first played on a 9700 Pro using a 3.0 Ghz P4 and it ran like shit. Doom 3 was infinitely smoother on that PC.

Those benches don't really represent the stuttering and loading issues, though. THAT was the real issue - not the frame-rate

Damn, and here I was super amped about the fact it supports cloud based saves.
Oh well, maybe by the time I get my new PC (in about 3 weeks) some patches will have fixed the performance some.

Steam got off to an incredibly awkward start too, everyone hated it. Look where it is now. Maybe MS are trying to replicate that?

My start with Steam was pre-ordering Half-Life 2, pre-loading Half-Life 2, and then finding out that the game was really awesome.

i got alan wake day 1 and was shocked at how well it ran for being such a good-looking game

Actually, this port is proof that MS' UWA platform works. Code once, port to where you want.

Problem is, AAA games require more finesse than just a button push and delivery out to the masses. If this game is truly un-optimized on PC, then only truly strong hardware will be able to get decent results. It will not scale well with weaker hardware.

I'm now on board with the "UWP for AAA games is ridiculous and not needed."

I love how the Windows 10 store is being compared to year 1 of Steam even though MS has been selling PC games digitally for years. They don't deserve the benefit of the doubt.

"UWP for AAA games is ridiculous and not needed."

And why's that? Before you would only have been able to play QB on XBO. Now thanks to Win10 you are able to play it on XBO and additionally on your PC. This is an enrichment for console gamers already now, and native UWP games will only get better in the future. ^^

I know they never made it sound like W10 codes would go out on launch day, but it's still hard to not be frustrated. Hoped I'd be able to remote into my home PC from work and start up the download. At this rate, I'll probably just cave and start the Bone version when I get home later.

I don't recall stuttering in my case (had 1gb of RAM at the time) but loading were very frequent and rather long.

Some people are reporting that it's running fine now, on full settings. Now there are two camps on reddit. "It's completely broken" and "It's working fine."
