We will see what happens with the new CEO when the reddit administration eventually makes a grave mistake and compare reactions.

I largely expect more of the same from the community that gave me death threats for having the audacity to say that chocolate ice cream is superior to vanilla.

It was hardly a singular mistake, and it was snowballing over a very long period of time.

Congrats, racist/sexist manchildren of the world.

And its people like this who do harm by trivializing usage to the point where actual cases of racism and sexism get taken less seriously because of their antics.

Congrats you are accomplishing the exact opposite of what you intend.

If you seriously want to make the argument that Racism and Sexism was the predominant driving force (or even a principal driving force) behind all this, go ahead and good luck.

Also good job on dismissing and marginalizing everyone how took legitimate issue with her that was also a woman with your 'manchildren' comment, not too mention the sexism there.

But why even bother, you're probably a drive by poster.

Oh look, someone who clearly hasn't read into the situation enough to generate an informed opinion!

I'm pretty sure most of the people who frame this as a someone being unjustly ousted by a bunch of racist/sexist manchildren for doing absolutely nothing wrong except for daring to be a WOMAN with POWER and OPINIONS don't actually use Reddit, or at least not all that much. I mean, even the more left/"SJW"-leaning subreddits like SubredditDrama, SRS, and GamerGhazi seem to have the consensus of "well, it sucks that those fuckers got what they wanted, but it was probably time for her to go."

As a person whose values are always misconstrued due to the same dialogue muddying as that comment, I don't understand why someone would want to perpetuate that with such broad strokes. Those sniping generalizations throw a wrench into the discussion, causing everyone to have to sit down and clear the shit before either side can even move on and advance the topic. It's stupid.

because it wasn't about the content of the subreddits, it was about their behavior. it was against site rules.

mind you, i'd ban coontown and the subs with pictures of dead people and all that shit if it were up to me, but that's not what that move was about.

Always heard about the racism on reddit but never thought much of it as id never seen it.

The i search reddit for "r/coontown"........damn......

I also believe that the username of the mod should be something different but you lost it when you said we should talk to nignogs like civilized people. We jus ned mo mone fo dem programz.

Wow.

The subs moderator is "DylannStormRoof"?

Okay....

Reddit is not what I thought it was.

Also, "quarantining" still sounds like the worst idea ever.

Letting white supremacists surround themselves with other white supremacists sounds like it's just going to reinforce their beliefs and make things even worse.

So, the new CEO wants to keep Coontown.

His position is literally "yeah we're going to allow an objectively garbage community that does nothing but breed racism and violence, and brings us a lot of bad press, but if we 'quarantine' it (read: do nothing about i), that makes it okay, because reasons."

I expect another Fappening-type scandal on Reddit by the end of the year.

Part of the problem is that people subscribed to the bad subreddits will also sub to the supposedly good ones. They're not just "quarantined" to those bad subreddits. The longer those terrible subreddits stay up, the more terrible people are going to be drawn to the reddit website as a whole.

There's not enough of them to take over those bigger subreddits, but there is enough of them to have an influence the other subreddits.

What a shitty decision. He's probably just trying to avoid the same kind of backlash Pao got. This definitely won't end well.

Apparently the CEO is some hardcore libertarian too. Saw this earlier:

Steve: I think it can get dangerous. The community has been good about policing itself. There was a phase there where if somebody screwed up in real life, but Reddit felt this sense of needing to dispense justice by calling this person and harassing them, which is a major issue. And I took no part in squashing this. They did it themselves.

A couple of more reasonable people were like, “Hey, quit it. This is not healthy. This reflects poorly on us. This ruins people’s lives. This is not how justice is supposed to work.” And so, I feel like Reddit gets a little too ahead of itself sometimes but also manages to rein itself it occasionally. They’re very self-aware. And that’s one of the things that I think is pretty cool about it.

In short, he thinks (apparently unironically) that Reddit is really good at policing itself and that upvotes/downvotes are good indicators of quality posts.

The more Reddit clings onto the hardcore libertarian crowd, the faster it'll die. The fact that the new CEO wants to keep these reprehensible, disgusting, racist and sexist subs is a field day for news sites if they want to pursue it.

And then the cycle continues. Reddit gets egg on their face, Reddit never learns.

I've stopped using the site entirely ever since I moved here to GAF, mainly because of these issues, along with the userbase being a group of whiny, war-mongering children.

This is the big issue- the pollution seeping into the other areas is terrible for discourse.

Pao was probably not responsible for the firing of Victoria anyway. That's all on the reddit board of directors. Besides, its unlikely that the CEO would oversee the firing of an employee that's that low on the company hierarchy.

Reddit only has 71 employees or so, and Victoria ran the largest moneymaker for the site. If it wasn't her direct doing, she's still responsible for it as CEO. I don't know where the narrative that the complete and total meltdown of reddit, unlike anything seen before, is somehow not her fault at all comes from. She is/was the captain of the ship.

B-b-but there's no sexism.

It's ridiculous. Saying that, well Victoria is a girl so it's not sexism is to be oblivious to how humans operate. GG came up with that chick drawing (red hair, green/purp sweater) of a chick. People use "I have a x friend so I can't be racist."

Stop being so willfully dense.

nobody is denying there were sexist and racist aspects in the backlash.

but to say it was the main drive IS being "willfully dense".

she's a shady person given her well-documented background, and just because a few bigots joined the fray does NOT mean all of that gets magically erased.

What else would you call them?

A small group of trolls. The seedy underside of reddit is such a small portion of the userbase. You don't even have to view their content. It can be completely ignored and filtered out of your feed. It seems pretty silly to label the entire site because a few subs are questionable. They can crack down on those folks without disturbing everyone else.

This:
or in terms of attracting revenue from advertisers who want to reach said new users without wading through a sea of racist memes and semen-stained photographs.

Is pretty funny and hilariously unrepresentative.

No one's saying there's not sexism/racism in how some parts of the internet were treating her. What people are saying is that it wasn't the impetus behind what got her fired and what was making her incredibly problematic as a leader there. If you think this was wholly because a bunch of racist/misogynist trolls from FPH shit up Reddit, you are woefully misunderstanding what happened in the wake of the Victoria firing.

Women more often being put in charge of failing businesses than successful ones is a real thing, but that was not the situation behind her hiring- Reddit was not failing.

Not something as asinine as terrorists. "Users" would be good.

Well, in this case he's referring to a subsection of Reddit users that harass and intimidate others, so "users" wouldn't work.

Assholes, shitlords, dirtbags. Putting them on the level of ISIS or Dylann Roof is quite a bit hyperbolic and does a disservice to the discussion.

I feel like those words aren't strong enough to convey how harmful and dangerous these people can be. The word "terrorist", while perhaps a tad hyperbolic, gets the point across.

Even if you disagree with the usage of the word, it's pretty clear that the people he is referring to have won. From what the new CEO has said, Reddit won't do anything to curb the racist and misogynistic trolls that plague it.

i think he meant inputting a system like GAF, where the banned user is shown why he got banned instead of just a blocked message.

but again, let's still remember that mods are all non-paid volunteers

admins were abusing shadowbans. Either ban them visibly or not at all, was his message. Hard to argue with that.

I've been on reddit for 7 years. After some of the shit I've seen I can't believe anyone would be against a mod or a admin deleting comments all together

He wants to get rid of moderators removing comments? What a good admin

No, it's about users deleting their accounts and comments. It's very common to find an older thread on a topic you're interested in only to find that the OP and 75% of the comments are [deleted]

When moderators remove posts it says [removed] not [deleted]

a number of services and bots have been created to attempt to archive posts for this reason

Yeah. Why would the CEO announce that he would take away some mod privileges after the whole blackout protest over mods not getting enough control over their subs? It's such a backwards thing to give users all the freedom they want and expect the subreddit moderators to handle their millions of users with such limited control.

I like reddit at this point hope that it crashes and burns on its stupid libertarian "freeze peaches" principle.

The Vox Writeup of the timeline is pretty good, with the only thing I think it misses is that Pao hit up mainstream news outlets to try and do damage control before ever posting a message directly to Reddit itself, which was just absurdly tone-deaf and fed right into the moderators' complaints about a lack of communication.

If they don't pull Alexis as well, though, it shows they're not actually committed to solving the problems there and are just doing it for appearances.

I'd imagine that "full deletions" will still be a thing for legitimately illegal/dangerous content like doxx and child porn and whatever. If it's offensive or off topic or just something the mod doesn't like, though? That should be a "this comment/post was deleted for [reason]. If you still want to see the post, click here."

It's not about taking a way mod power, it's about transparency.

yeah that was a head-scratching move.

her excuse was that anything she would have posted would have been voted to oblivion so she didn't try reddit first.

But given that she was able to write that same response (and was not downvoted to oblivion, instead the opposite) and had the power as an admin to make the response site wide and visually noticeable shows that not only her, but also the people around here were tone-deaf to the issue in the first place.

miscommunication between the admins and the mods.

wasn't it pretty much founded on libertarian ideals to begin with? that experiment has pretty much failed.

how so?

Funny thing about that: Voat, A reddit copycat site that attempted to bank on the self-imposed exile by redditors angry over the recent banning of subs like /r/fatpeoplehate had to come to terms about said copycat site having boards that had users sharing honest-to-god CP. Again, people lost their shit because the owner of Voat had to take it down lest he faced legal troubles.

This shit just doesn't work.
