Redfall |OT| Left with dead

Why does this start me all the way back at the base when i die, when i am really far away doing a mission? (playing solo). Then i have to run all the way back? is this normal? is there any way to prevent this

Same as the Division. Just played 3 hours with a couple of buds and:

The artsyle is fine in motion, like most arkane stuff. The drops and judder are no worse than when I played through Far Cry 5 so I can make my peace with it. Vampire nest was kind of fun - cool imagery like the start with the vertical water. It seems relatively easy on three player co op so far.

There have been a couple of AI quirks but thankfully nothing as blatant as the videos going round. At the moment it seems like a game we will finish the campaign of and 1000/1000 and then maybe move on.

As I've recently played all the Far Cry games on co op the progression is quite normal for me where only the host saves. It's annoying for sure but it's not unique and even Ubi struggle with it.

It's not groundbreaking but it's decent enough for a co-op shooter to whizz through. It would be interesting to see what the roadmap looks like. I feel, like godfall, the lack of matchmaking will hurt this the most.

Ummm... erm... well Redfall does at least run better than Star Wars Jedi: Survivor even though it has shader compilation stutter (because of course it does!) but isn't anywhere near as annoying as EA's game. And even though it appears to be an NVIDIA sponsored title from the loading screen it includes DLSS with DLAA (including DLSS3 frame generation), FSR 2.1 and XeSS (you reading this, AMD?!?!?!?!) but then I guess they don't have anything to be embarrassed about unlike AMD.

That ends the positives though because I think this game is utterly mediocre. First impressions are not great, the game starts with a cheap-looking "cinematic", comprising of a set of mostly static still images that set the story but just underwhelm due to the poor artwork. When the game starts it isn't much better. There's the usual exaggerated human models that Arkane are fond of, which is fine I guess, but the textures are average and lighting is extremely basic with virtually no ambient shading whatsoever. Objects on tables and so on just look as if they're floating because they cast no shadows. It's hard to believe that the Xbox Series X version is shipping with only a 30 fps mode because the graphical quality is distinctly last-gen in my opinion... at best. The opening level is at least interesting due to objects such as ships being held in water that is frozen in place and defying the law of physics (which the game doesn't explain) but this is hardly last-gen standard never mind current-gen in my opinion. There's lots of glitches too such as flickering shadows, which even on the Epic preset, appear low-res. Visually the game is average at best.

So what about the gameplay? Well, it feels like any other first-person shooter and the A.I. isn't exactly amazing. It kind of looks and plays like an Arkane game but it somehow feels diluted and shallow and is definitely lacking the addictive factor of their previous games such as the excellent Prey and Dishonoured 1 & 2 (I wasn't a big fan of Deathloop). It just feels so uninspired and, dare I say it, boring. I played this solo but I get the impression that this is meant to be played co-op with friends (which isn't for me as I prefer to play a game at my own pace and take time to explore etc which isn't a good fit for social gaming!).

Thank you GamePass. At least I got to try it and I'll see if I can stomach another hour or two before uninstalling it. Not impressed with the game at all.

Oh and lest I forget, the game runs at 158 fps at 1440p using the Epic preset with DLSS3 frame generation enabled and DLAA. Apart from the aforementioned shader stutters, which are nowhere near as egregious as Jedi Survivor, the game at least seems to run well. Maybe I am being too generous here as PC gamers haven't exactly been blessed with good games lately. It does make me wonder how Jedi Survivor might have ran with DLSS3 frame generation if AMD hadn't sponsored the game. While it would still have been bad, it might have made the game a lot more bearable not to mention given it a decent image scaling option (FSR2 is very poor in EA's game).

Playing on Series X.
Played up to the first vampire takedown in the firehouse before waiting for the rest of the game to download and get whatever updates will come next.
I spent a long time exploring that first area around the boats and boathouses reading everything and finding lots of guns and ammo as well as lots of I assume crafting items. Don't know if it's used for crafting or if I just sell it. Anyone want several bottles of bleach?
Series X seems to play ok once I took the advice here and turned down the input response. Why the heck was that a thing?
Going to solo this. I have no plans to do anything online if I can help it.
The red mist simply took away my health. I assume I will need an ability to get through it eventually.

Not as bad a game as I was expecting going on the internet response. But It's not going to win any awards either. The cut scenes so far have been stills with camera moving around the motionless characters.

Controls are a bit stiff. I could not aim very well. I might have to turn down the difficulty to see if the aim snaps to the enemies.
The stealth kills were really lame. The enemies have been brain dead so far.

I'm going to keep playing it. It seems ok.

About three hours in on PC. It's not great but nowhere near as dire as the warriors are saying in some of the other threads.

I'd like to be able to have more than three weapons in active rotation - sorting through all that junk in the inventory is dull, albeit standard for this sort of thing, and you can't do it during a fight. A single player can't wield enough weapons to handle combinations of enemy types, it's definitely built for co-op (which I'll probably never play).

Seen a few glitches too, including a vampire that's just frozen in place in a toilet with no collision detection active, and cultists moving around by sliding instead of walking.

Playing as Devinder and his teleporter is virtually game-breaking because the AI has no idea what to do if you attack them from rooftops. One can easily clear out an entire fight by just throwing down his lightning thing on cooldown and watch as the helpless dumbasses on the ground die one by one. Vampires can sometimes teleport up to you but all variants have been easily dispatched so far, even on the hardest difficulty.

That said, I don't hate the game so far... the classic Arkane level design is present and I've been enjoying exploring every nook and cranny, but the AI is inexcusably bad and really detracts from the experience, just like it did in Deathloop.

The levels are honestly awesome. Some very large east coast New England style houses. At mission 2 now and found the vampire cave. Its pretty fun.

I personally don't mind dumb AI. Just feels like a breezy beat em up with guns.

I too wish you had a weapon wheel with more than 3 weapons. Constantly having to re-equip things and the menus don't pause.

I like the loot system generally though. So streamlined it took me a while to get it. Anything you pick up is just instantly money. Doesn't even put an item in your inventory but feels like you are collecting stuff. Then just sell guns right from your backpack and that's all you manage.

Game plays so much smoother and better on PC. Idk why I even bothered to start on console until it gets a patch. But I gotta say it’s so cool to be able to just load it up on PC and it auto syncs with my Xbox save.

Same visual bug I noticed last time I played on console, for some reason some textures take a good while to load in. The logo on the floor of the fire station you can fast travel to, for example.

Still haven’t come across these vampire nests or outposts 😐

same. i sometimes feel like there're games like this one where, while everyone else is getting pissed off because their immersion's constantly getting broken by technical/graphical issues, i'm just laughing at some idiot vampire standing 2 feet away from me, muttering to himself while staring off into space...

it's not that i don't enjoy well-made games. it's just that i have a pretty high tolerance level for not well-made ones. but, of course, there're some, like gotham knights, that're even too much for me...

I only have one gun with a stake attached. Can all guns be staked?
Ive missed a few tutorials because I thought I was holding B to dismiss some other screen and the tutorial got dismissed instead. Happened a few times.
Talking to characters the “X“ to talk stays onscreen the entire time. 🙄
Got to both locations For the helicopters he say I need to return to base with the info but no one at the base wants it . So glad I died a few times to get those supplies for all you ungrateful jerks.

*shrug* I like it so far.

To be fair if I had money to pick between this and Dead Island 2 I’d pick DI2 since that looked more fun then what I’m doing.

Idk if I’ll complete it, especially with Zelda around the corner but it’s nowhere near as bad as the internet wants it to be . It should’ve been way better though. We don’t have many good vampire games at all.

Just played a few hours on PC as Dev, and it was pretty fun overall. The gunplay feels like Deathloop or B4B. There's tons of resources and loot to collect, found a bunch of decent weapons. I tried to not watch too much of the previews and whatnot but it's what I was expecting so far for the most part. I didn't run into anything so far that was buggy or weird, but then again didn't play coop yet. Does it really become that bad after many more hours?? And this is coming from playing a lot of Dead Island 2, in which I need to finish that first before getting too into this one. The outrage of the internet doesn't surprise me anymore but I dunno what people were expecting.

I’ve been able to stake multiple guns. It’s in the customize menu. If you have a gun equipped that without a stake and you dismantle a gun with a stake, it will automatically put the stake on the equipped gun.

As for the mission, did you interact with the ammo supply at the second chopper and spawn the vampire? I don’t think the game ends missions back at the base, it ends them and gives you the XP as soon as you finish the task. So you should be able to go to the mission desk or whatever in the base and start a new mission.

I do remember the vampires spawning at that point. the mission has a checkmark so I must have cleared it. I think I did not have that mission selected at the time so that might be why it never notified me of a mission complete.

I need to upgrade my raven as just highlighting enemies isnt much of a power currently.

Things this game DOES do well:

Audio. The soundtrack is fantastic. Voice acting for me has been on point. General creepy sounds to add atmosphere are exactly what you want from a great game.

The jump scares have been superb. Multiple times a vamp out of nowhere teleports on me and I crap my pants. On hard mode it can get wild when a vamp only needs 2-3 hits to kill you.

Lastly, the nests are the highlight of the game so far. Visually the most interesting to look at, provide the best challenge, and give the player the most reward. This should've been the base for which the game was built upon.

Did a couple more missions and a vampire nest yesterday, I still dig it. The dollhouse and lab were great.

Can’t believe how bland the loot part of the game is however. Even Deathloop had more interesting weapons and trinkets, here it’s only stats increase. They could have removed the entire leveling/loot part of the game and it’d have been better.

Once you get the invisibility he's pretty strong. Mark everyone. Snipe a few. They run up and you can cloak and vanish right in front of them. Then melee in the back or hide and repeat.

Just finished a mission that spanned the hospital and cinema. That was pretty good, although the boss threw down some sort of purple shroud that obscured all the cultists who were shooting me from another room. The three weapon limit is a downer, I couldn't pause in the middle of all that and select the UV beam weapon I really wanted.

The lack of cutscenes is a bit cheap. Even the film I had to find for the movie projector was just a bunch of stills.

I can see myself finishing this one though. It's lightweight fun, and if the 17-hour estimate on the Xbox app is accurate then I spent a lot longer than that in Deathloop without ever completing it.

(PS before anyone from the review score concern thread reports me for liking the game, no I don't work for Microsoft)

Im doing the mission in the Addison mansion now, and its startibg to remind me of Vampires The Masquerade Bloodlines. Theres a quest in a similar looking mansion in there. Lots of sneaking around and looting shit and getting the jump on the vampires. I like how theyre not too easy to fight. A decent challenge so far.

Booted it up on Xbox again to turn off this response setting, makes a huge difference. Stumbled upon what I guess is a vampire nest? It's just fangs icon on a house. Didn't go in. Also found my first safehouse. Whatever those soldiers are, forgot the name of their team, holy shit they hit way harder than the mindless cultists or any vampire I've faced yet.

If its the thing Im thinking about, activating Jakobs stealth skill dispels that which I thought was a nice touch.

I'll give that a try next time I find one. I like the way that everyone is hiding in fear of vampires, but they have no problem trusting an invisible man with a magic raven.

Started seeing some stuttering in random areas, which is weird but might be related to having my work VM connected on the second monitor. Hope it doesn't crash and take down my work connection, that would be terrible a most relaxing afternoon.

Currently playing on Series X with Layla. I’m enjoying it so far. Perfect game? Not by a long shot. But as the game that excited me on announcement and convinced me to get my first ever xbox, I’m happy enough with it. Never played FPs games, so spent over a week getting used to the concept with Destiny 2 (my gaming friend group of Destiny players were thrilled to have me join) and it’s been pretty helpful ig me learning the general idea of being alert, aiming and more. Ordered the Layla themed controllers from Design Labs since she was a major factor in my getting the game. Want to play with Jacob at some point too

why does this game look sooooo much worse than Deathloop? I'd think they share the engines? continue improving that one?
It’s a different engine according to Wikipedia (UE4 vs Void Engine based on idTech).

Deathloop looked better on consoles for sure (couldn’t get it to run properly on my old PC though).

Played a bit more of this and got REMY to level three and I can see what they were going for here. There's SOME interaction with the environment and definitely different approaches to tackling objectives, but it's all very light. Which. . . is fine.

The world density though needs to be increased because it does feel odd not running across. . . anything. FAR CRY can get away with this because there's other stuff to do in between not fighting anything. Here if you're not shooting. . . you're not traversing through a world and pointing out all its flaws.

Claim the safe houses.

Or the landmarks. I also was slightly raging in the beginning having to go back because you do kinda get your ass handed to you if you get overwhelmed but the landmarks should start showing up if you do the first couple of missions including the RESOURCES one.

I don't think the game looks worse aesthetically, it's just a different art style. However these games were surely developed at the same time and by different teams (even if using the same engine).

Haven't really dug in yet, because I want to play with the wife and we had stuff going on, but I played a bit on PC, and I have to say I was really surprised how decent the performance is. I mean there's a little judder here or there but it's pretty smooth, even on my aging PC. I have a new computer I'm building in the next few days, but it runs totally fine on the old one on High settings with a bit of DLSS.

It didn't make a bad impression at all, except the AI, which is truly abysmal.

Fighting multiple enemies is getting quite annoying. I'm on my way to the mansion but every route I take has an ambush spot with multiple vampires and cultists. Three or four is fine, but there are way more than that, and even though I have plenty of ammo my weapons reload too slowly.

Are they actually scaling down the fights for single players, or am I trying to take on the same amount of enemies a party of four would face?

I do wish there were grenades or something at times. Not a lot of crowd control elements for the character I picked. I think some of the other classes have more options for that. Interesting question though. I'm sure they didn't rebalance anything for single player if I had to guess.

The character I'm using has the UV stake which deals with multiple vampires at once.

The Vampire nests have a light blue field around them and everything is stronger inside the field which grows if you don't tackle them. They are actually a nice change of pace and scenery with good loot and a desperate race against time at the end to grab as much as possible, well worth doing them.

I just started this today and the game is better than I thought it would be. It isn't some great epic game or anything, but I'm enjoying myself. So far I've escaped the ferry, secured the firehouse, secured another safe house and completed the two birds with one stone mission.

I liked Division 1/2 as well, if that's the feeling it's giving you, should be fun. Hopefully they announce a window for that performance patch soon.

Just finished the mansion mission - that was genuinely excellent, I really enjoyed it. Getting there was fun, now that I know not to just steam through groups of enemies, and plotting how to enter the house was cool, if simple. Sniper rifle and invisibility for me, but I haven't yet tried any other characters. I also cleared out a couple of nests and got a high damage pistol that makes fighting a bit easier.

Shame that the thread raging/gloating about the review scores is 60+ pages when the one for actually playing the game hasn't yet made it to 5, but I'm really getting into this now. It's not Dishonored level but it's not bad at all.

The worst part of the game is the looting. Not the loot , that’s whatever.

I’m talking about having to mash the open, pick up, etc button everywhere in the environment to get 12 dollars. It’s also how you find guns too in certain areas. Plus the same stuff you inspected stays glowing in the environment to make you think it’s a new piece of paper or a book even though you’ve interacted with it.

Clearly a major oversight. Plus, on the topic of loot itself I think we need 4 slots, not 3.

4 for sure.

1. Handgun or Assault rifle
2. Shotgun
3. Sniper rifle
4. Special guns (stake, UV)
