Report: Marathon Delay Likely as Sony Cancels All Paid Marketing Plans

You're fundamentally lazy...

First off, you have no idea what Jason Jones has done for the last 15 years. How involved he has been in on any games. You're just like a moth drawn to an open flame. You get attached to names for the sake of names. I specifically told you that you can go to mobygames and you can see how many of the original Halo team worked on Witch Queen and it's considerable. More people at Bungie who worked on Halo 3 worked on Destiny 2 than worked on Halo 1. It's all there in the credits, I'm not going to pick names off a list to present to you and pretend as if someone was more key than another, simply because I'm more familiar with their name.

I'm Pete Parsons' alt account who said he should be fired... that tracks... you're a troll.
I think the past decade of gaming has taught us that the singular visionary is absolutely indispensable for gaming project. Metal Gear without Kojima, Dark Souls without Miyazaki, COD without West and Zampella etc. We've seen publishers throw all the money in the world at projects, but it never sticks without those key people at the top. Concord is a brilliant example. Suicide Squad. DAVG. Budget was not a problem for any of those projects. What they lacked was that intelligencia at the top with the vision and the manic determination to see it brought to life. I don't think there is an artistic vision for Marathon. It's a product. "Hey Sony, here's a sweet sweet 24kt gold Bungie IP that we're going to tie to the flavor of the month MP game mode with full monetization". How can we know this you ask? The only thing unique about Marathon was the art style and come to find out it was lifted whole cloth from an artist who doesn't even work at Bungie. Will be interesting to see how much of it even remains after the lawyers have their way with it. I think it's going to be the crown jewel of the failed AAA games we've been watching over the past couple years. The one we really remember a decade from now. This incarnation of Marathon was not an amazing idea brewing in an artist's head for years before a painstaking birth, it was a boardroom creation. This is honestly the first project that Parsons can really say was his labor of love. Unfortunately, his love is not gaming, it's pulling money out of publishers and living the Robb Report lifestyle.

I guess you are right that names are important to me. I always read the linear notes of albums I love. When I watch a film I stick around for the credits if I really liked it. I don't see why gaming should be any different. I don't think the Bungie logo embroidery on the developer's hats is what gives the games the magic, it's the blood sweat and tears of O'Donnel, Smith, Staten, Greisemer etc. The concept wrought to life over nights of loving crunch and comradery. All gone. But ngl, those cars are really fucking sweet.

Even if they decided to make it F2P.
IMO, this game is going F2P. Considering how much flak they've got lately, if they stated the price is $40 people would immediately laugh at it.

On the plus side, Bungie not divulging the price was a blessing in disguise. Imagine if they said the game is $40 a month ago, and then the plagiarism issue came out a couple week later.... You guys are charging $40 for stolen goods????

Coming out clean as F2P they can improve goodwill and max out user base as a freebie.

Every creative that forged Halo and Destiny has been gone from Bungie for years. There was an internal hostile coup years back where ex-Microsoft employees took over. Not developers, business admin and marketing guys. Plenty of vids out there detailing this. It's just a Bungie skin suit. Moreso than even modern Bioware and the like.

There is no Bungie here. Sony bought a husk with one IP.

$3.6B

dumb and dumber laughing GIF

Sony doesn't do paid marketing for Bungie games, there would be nothing to cancel. Source: the company I work for does the global paid marketing for Playstation

Bungie do it themselves same as with Destiny

Ooof.

Man, with the exception of a handful of games that, in todays market, seem like flukes (they aren't, they are just old school awesome), this has been the worst generation I can ever remember. And I've been playing since NES days

we are really in the era of reactions to early game previews dictating entire project cancellations.

this is the type of shit you see at the absolute top of bubbles

Bungie sucks ass now and Sony is retarded for paying 3.7 billion dollars for them.
What have they released after Sony aquired them??🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️
Think the latest 1-2 expansions for Destiny, correct?

They're making some money back already with expansion and micro sales off them.

If the new Destiny roadmap pays out they'll get their money back in due time. If marathon totally flops it'll be a wash or negative though.

Delay means game gonna have even bigger budget aka will have to perform even better to not be a flop, which by this point is highly unlikely, didnt think sony would experience 2 concords in same gen but who knows at this point, they really need to get knocked out twice in the same round to come to their senses apparently, hell we still got fairgame$ waiting in line at the back :D

Is it early? The game is due out in a few months and just had a public test. It seems the feedback was not good, the game has no juice, and oh yea they now need to go through every bit of art to check plagiarism and pay off some twitter weirdo so they don't get sued.

That is so weird to me. Why copy the art, when the artstyle exists. Just do your own twist on it. It's not like they invented anything.

I'm not convinced they can do good Destiny 3 at this point. A lot of the talent that made that game are gone.
The big yearly DLC is so hit or miss too.
The game peaked for me before Sony bought them and so I don't see that as a reflection of the acquisition. They got bigger in size, but not better and in many ways worse.

Sony and others were banking on those players spending money like it was the covid days when people were forced more or less to stay at home. It's actually a healthy thing that people aren't buying into the whole GAAS thing that relies on you grinding and spending way more time playing games.

To believe they were bought by Sony to oversee, advise, and have a say on other studios live services games! And this is the shit they want to churn out lol. God damn hilarious.

PlayStation leadership should go back to Japan or to someone who actually knows what fans want. I miss the team that was there for PS4.

Sony needs to cancel this game. There isn't any way to save it with the current Bungie. The only thing current Bungie is good for is milking Destiny until it's a dry corpse and then shutting Bungie down after it has outlived its usefulness

Lol, lmao even.

This is so bad, maybe a reboot, rebrand or even just a restart of the game is in order.

Oh Bungie, how far have you fall, I would like to say i dont miss you but somehow 343 is even worse.

They should, I wouldn't advise against that.

Yeah, very true. They at least knew that much ahead of time.

That's true. But I personally think it still has a way to go before it can even receive any goodwill TBH. There's just not enough staying power there, and I don't know what they could do to make it work better in their favor. Especially with how the core game has been put together.

Hahahah this is the most clandestine black-op in corporate espionage. Fill a failing company with crappy employees and sell it to your competitor to help them hang themselves.

5 D chess maneuver, bravo!

Doubt this is a delay. This means Sony has discovered that they do not need to pay anything to advertise the game anymore, as the game has reached its maximum potential exposure. Besides, we have Playstation fans helping to advertise without charge. So why not save the money that isn't going to do anything

But also, all the marketing material is laden with stolen artwork. All the gameplay footage they have in those marketing materials is gonna have to be re-cut and edited to not contain any of the lifted art. It's probably less work to just redo all the marketing after Bungie's "artwork audit" is complete.

I think that cinematic trailer they had done by that famous director looked way more interesting than the actual game. This is on top of the fact that Bungie said they don't even have a story fleshed out for the game (that's months away from releasing???) Bizarre.

Since this thing is being produced by Sony they definitely should've had a narrative driven solo campaign, even if it was small, and then tacked on the extraction shooter mode as a multiplayer feature, or better yet, make the multiplayer mode free-to-play to get people into buying the 70 dollar single player campaign. Experiment a little.

The game looks distinct - prime it for franchising, it would translate well to an anime series, maybe even pitch it as a movie or some shit. It just feels like it's coming in way too hot like it's been rushed out the door.

They are caught because on one hand Sony loves SP stuff and their fans enjoy SP narratives too. Bungie has a history of making shooters with lots of lore and SP campaigns too with Halo and Destiny. So there's some expectations already baked in.

But the game has been so problematic in development and Sony needs them to rush it out the door, so they cut corners. Exactly like Concord. Another shooter that was supposed to have giant story and lore as the second coming of Star Wars. But had no SP and it's story was a bunch of cut scenes.

If Sony or Bungie cant handle SP anymore, then dont bother and make it a MP focused game. Apex and PUBG dont have SP. I dont think anyone playing COD Warzone cares. And most COD gamers probably beeline right to MP skipping whatever Captain Price is doing in SP. So you dont have to have a detailed SP campaign for a shooter to succeed.

But since they put so much resources and focus on SP, it's a disaster if it all doesnt come together at release because it looks half finished. Concord didnt even make sense. It was so choppy how they released their SP vignettes, supposedly the Amazon video didnt even have to do with any of the characters in the game. I dont know if thats actually true, since I didnt watch it. But thats what I read. Why would they do this? Because they are trying for some "it'll all come together and make sense later".

Well, if things were executed smoothly from the start, you wouldnt need to do that.

As bad as this needs some sort of new direction, I doubt t the delay is for that.

They are probably removing all the assets that they supposedly "borrowed" before they get hit with some lawsuit for a cut of sales.

They should take advantage of the delay and go f2p but it's doubtful.
