ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X Announced | Coming this holiday 2025

Pointless device.

All these handhelds are just empty filler snacks until the Steam Deck 2 arrives and after using the track pads on my SD I won't even consider any handheld without that feature.

Sold. Will hand Steam Deck down to one of my kids. Time for a replacement. The only thing that would have made the Steam Deck even better, access to Game Pass, is there.

Pretty keen on this as an upgrade for my Steam Deck OLED. Although, I assume installing Windows on a Steam Deck when this releases would essentially make it operate like the ROG Xbox Ally (not the X obviously), getting all the Windows benefits/updates they'll be adding to the OS as part of these new devices.

It's really great news to see that MS is working to make Windows a more practical platform for games and with a better user interface, that's really cool and I'm looking forward to it on my PC.

About this hardware, it looks like an evolution of the Rog Ally, which is good, but I'm not willing to pay the price they'll ask for it.

This is much more interesting than it initially seems because it's essentially a preview of what's to come for the next console.

The 'Xbox PC' hybrid with full Steam integration is as good as confirmed.

Great point.

I just hope they pull of some magic to enable xbox native games to run in a pc environment. If they manage that they have done everything I could ask for, really.

Its not great either when you're already starting from such low framerates with anything other than potato settings in the options menu....

I've actually been quietly surprised with my standard rog ally. I've been able to get most games to 60fps. Some to 40 and yeah there's others that dont work too well but id say its rarer than the ones that do work. Dropping to 720p or 900p really helps.

The funny thing is that this Xbox ROG Ally handheld is the reason why Microsoft abandoned an agreement they signed with Nintendo 3 years ago to port over CoD, they won't do anything that could make some people buy a Switch 2 instead of their own handheld.

Valve should be working on getting steam OS ultra stable on the Ally chipset in time for the launch of this.

I'd be interested at that point.

Having MS and ROG push this device, it has every chance to surpass Steam Deck in sales right ?
Microsoft is betting big on it. They are even abandoning a deal they signed with Nintendo 3 years ago to port CoD to Switch 2, because their focus now will be to push their own handheld instead of propping up Nintendo.

Looking increasingly like streaming is going to be the only option for people who want to play their old Xbox console library on these new "Xbox" branded PC devices.

the shape is ... peculiar ... ugh, ugly
They we're just inspired by Nintendo.

Yeah, i agree. Im hoping they pull something off further down the line. Even if it takes a few years. I think it will just be streaming for quite a while though. Which sucks.

I just don't see how Xbox has any supporters after this showcase. They are now pushing Play Anywhere hard…and it's not even a new feature. It's been around for about a decade now. They are very obviously pushing this since the play anywhere games are basically the only "Xbox" games that will play on this third party Xbox device.

If this doesn't tell you they are bowing out of consoles, I don't know what else to tell you. Damn shame since they finally have the games to compete, they just didn't give the console time to build back up the consumer trust.

Edit - also Aaron Greenberg has his replies locked on X. They know it's over. Anyone investing in the Xbox ecosystem at this point is just flushing money down the toilet.

It's new but it's not a huge generational uplift when it comes to GPU horsepower, something like 30% faster.
It's not even that. Folks tested the "AI HX ???" (I can't be bothered to lookup the nonsense AMD names their latest mobile chips) and it's maybe 15% uptake for Z1E in "some" games and basically nothing in others.

We will see if actual Z2E has been tweaked for specifically handheld version but judging how Z1E went, don't hold your breath. AMD's AI HX 370 (basically the equivalent of Z2E) also seems to be very pricey. So I expect $1000 or so for the Z2E version of the Xbox, maybe a few $/€ less if MS is willing to subsidize it a bit (doubt it).

When the PC Box comes in they're going to have to lay it out. I'm still willing to give it a bit more time. Honestly, everything is in place except 100% forward compatibility. Windows lite is real, and is at least starting. Can be improved on. Gamepass is delivering, their studios are consistently putting out good stuff, we know their vision is now open store with Steam and everything else. Literally just 1 piece left. Play Anywhere is chipping away at it, but there's a ton left to do there. Forward compatibility is literally the only thing left for people to wonder about at this point.

Nah, this won't surpass Steam Deck in sales but it could make Windows handhelds more competitive. I bought a Steam Deck over a Windows handheld because of the superior user experience. If Windows can replicate that it will make those devices more appealing.

Mario 4K on Switch 2 looks gorgeous. What does Xbox have to even compete?

Well, they have ALL the old Nintendo games to play on the system, see Mario Odyssey its not 4k but hey, since when Nintendo gamers give a shit about resolution right ? Its ALL about having fun.

Also, this isnt even the Xbox version, Xbox ll have a Z2 so Nintendo game ll run even better on the system.

So this update is exclusive to Asus handhelds until next year? Steam OS will have quite the head start by then.

Rog Xbox Aly is coming out at the end of the year, right?

I'm guessing it's an OS that isn't quite ready for release yet, and "next year" for "other handheld" would actually be only months away VS this Xbox Rog Aly.

But yes, it's a difficult situation for MS. Which fits with the reports of why they're prioritizing an OS and software for present Handhelds over releasing a handheld with proprietary hardware.

We are seing the beginning of the future home console/PC hybrid's UI. The next phase is having an official emulator for older Xbox titles implemented.

Not interested in anything Xbox anymore hardware wise.
Especially when my PS5 is an "Xbox" also. :p

I thought they were going to customize it like an "Xbox" but not even that, on the screen it says ROG, a system like this with Windows and on top of that expensive is doomed before it comes out.

Could be a timing thing for AMD as well since Lenovo also isn't releasing their Z2E version until the fall.
