Saw someone on NYC subway playing Switch. The Switch has made it.

Somebody please play 1 2 Switch on the subway and videotape it.

I was playing the Switch in a coffee shop last weekend when someone sat next to me asking if it was the new Nintendo.

I immediately gave them a tutorial of the basics and fired up Mario Kart. I handed them a joy-con and before I knew it, everyone in the coffee shop was crowded around, cheering us on as we played. It's almost as if the entire business shut down, time slowed and there was a spotlight on the switch.

We started passing the joycons around until everyone had a turn. Many laughs were had but we all eventually returned to what we were doing and I packed up and left.

Playing the Switch almost everyday in subway or tramway. Mostly playing VOEZ because I can only have the tablet and it's smaller in size. Nobody ever came to me, even when playing a more classical game :( Even when playing at Starbucks or in the subway in Beijing, no one gives a damn.
Fun fact : when I use them, I like to clip the joycons before getting the Switch out of my bag, because it makes almost like a "loading a gun" noise, and I can see if people notice it.

I played mine on transit for the first time yesterday. It worked out pretty well actually. Although 200cc Mario Kart on a bumpy bus is kind of impossible.

Saw a guy play Switch the other day in the same train, sat right next to him, saw he was playing Mario Kart, I pulled out my Switch and asked if he wants to play a round or two.

He packed his Switch in his bag, stood up and went away. Saw him sitting on the stairs when I left the train, still playing Mario Kart. :(

If true, I feel bad for you since you were just trying to be nice, but....lmao!!

I want Switch to be a success as much as the next person but lord it feels like people are trying real hard to stan for Nintendo these days. Both in subtle and not so subtle ways.

I saw plenty of people playing Vita's and even PSP's back in the day on public transportation.

Also, you really want every game to have weapons that break? No thanks. IMO it takes a special design for a game to necessitate weapons that break after killing 6 enemies.

I take DC subway couple times a week and have been doing that for years. I don't think I have ever seen anyone with a handheld on it. To be fair I haven't done that either despite owning a 3DS and a Vita. I have played those during air travel though.

I have a similar story, but with a cool happy ending. I was waiting for the bus, and there was a woman waiting next to me. As the bus arrives, she pulls her Vita out of her pocket.

I, in response, pulled my Vita out of my pocket. I sit on the bus, she sits next to me. She's playing Persona 4, I'm playing Super Time Force Ultra. After a few awkward minutes she says "So what games you got?"

So now we start talking and showing each other what games we have installed on our Vitas. She asks me if I played Arkham Origins Blackgate mentioning that she worked on it a bit.

I tell her I played Arkham Origins but not Blackgate, and she told me she worked as a programmer on Origins. She's a dev at WB. Super cool trip, I even stayed on for a few extra stops to keep talking with her. =)

I would've even be happy with a simple "what games you've got?" lmao

That sucks. You were probably having visions of playing impromptu games of MK8 in the park or on a rooftop.

Well seems like I was silly enough to think that a impromptu game session during a train ride was going to be a thing ;_;

Edit: Thinking about it, the worst part was that he was sacrificing his seat in a crowded train to avoid playing Mario Kart with me whyyyy WHYYY

I take a city bus everyday and have only seen someone playing a Switch once since launch and they were playing Bomberman of all games.

Lol.

With you on the first half.

Then you gotta Stan and shit on Zelda having clearly not played it.

Come on breh

"That said, last night, there was a girl playing Zelda on her Switch. I gave her a high five and we discussed all our favorite shrines, and we readily agreed that having weapons break after 1 hit was totally the right way to go, and we hoped every other game incorporated that mechanic going forward."

Is this satire? This sounds like satire. The weapon breaking part especially.

My satire bells are going off.

I take the NYC subway maybe 15-20x a year and I probably see someone playing Vita, 3DS, etc a little less than half the times

I take a train into NY Penn from NJ every day for work and usually see someone playing a switch 1 or 2 times a week.

First time I saw it was the first time I saw the Neon Joycons in person. So jealous I have the grey ones :(

Lol. Come on man. I own BoTW on Wii U and am like 35 hours in. My opinions on weapons breaking are what they are. Now that I've got the Master Sword, it bothers me way less. But I still don't want EVERY game to have it.

During my daily commute here in NYC the last 234 years, it's been pretty rare to see someone playing a handheld system on the subway. Maybe two times a year. To be honest, I haven't seen any handheld the last year or 2, though, as everyone just plays games on their phone.

That said, last night, there was a girl playing Zelda on her Switch. I gave her a high five and we discussed all our favorite shrines, and we readily agreed that having weapons break after 1 hit was totally the right way to go, and we hoped every other game incorporated that mechanic going forward.

Seriously though, I thought the chance of seeing a Switch on the subway was near 0. The weird thing (to me) was that she just put it into her backpack as she left the train. I'd want a carrying case for that badboy.

Other than belittling people with a different opinion, what purpose does this post serve? How did saying this play in your mind to think it's a good contribution?

Probably because its the same reasoning why nobody wants to be seen playing a game device in public. I've asked people with a 3DS/DS why they only play at home/office and the answer is usually roughly "I don't want to look awkward"
Smart devices get away with it because it's something everybody owns, so choosing to play a game on there is seen as causal enough.

I see a dude on the E train at least once a week playing his neon Switch. Usually Mario Kart, I know this because I'm nosey.

Still too scared to bring mine out in public. It's only ever a portable when I'm in bed.

I saw a guy with a Switch on the Shanghai subway. Gave him a first bump and pat on the ass.

Also saw myself with a Switch many times in airports and on airplanes. So that's 2 Switches in the wild, plus yours OP makes 3. Nintendo has a hit it seems. They've sold at least 3.

Didn't read the op or other posts, just going to say it. NYC is a metropolitan area of 18 million people. Seeing someone on the subway in arguably the captial of the world doesn't indicate success. Don't know what else there is to discuss.

Once saw a nigga playing the Vita in a movie theater before the previews started here in Houston.

Me

In all seriousness though, I did see one Switch in the wild about a month back. It was a graduate student at my school chilling during her lunch time. Also playing Breath of the Wild. I hadn't seen one in person, so I (very politely) asked if I could hold it. She was cool people.

Now that all of my friends and I have graduated, I don't really know anyone I can talk gaming with in person, which doesn't bother me, but I always try to when a brief opportunity presents itself. I'm still not very sold on the Switch outside of my need to experience BotW, but I do like the potential social aspect of it. I'm extremely introverted and usually hate when people try to talk to me while I'm out listening to music or reading a book, but I've never really minded anyone striking up a random convo about a game I'm playing in public for some reason (though I do try to be really polite when I ask someone else what they're playing, for obvious reasons).

I've seen someone playing a Vita on the NYC subway before. Talk about a rare sighting.

I was once playing Danganronpa 2 on the subway. Right next to me was a girl also playing Danganronpa 2, and we were at the SAME exact part of the game.

To the OP, I see people playing games on the subway all the time. As a matter of fact, I'm on the train right now and this guy next to me is using a 3DS.

When I lived in Brooklyn in 2012/13 I saw a lot of 3DS' on the subway and I would get a full deck of Streetpasses ( RIP ☹️ ) every day! Those were the days...

I hope you got his permission to post that. Using stranger's pictures on the internet is…odd.

Wait, is the guy in that pic using wireless headphones with a 3DS???

Eh, he's in public, candid shots and all that. It's not like he's beig captured in an embarassing moment or something.

4.3 million people ride the subway in NYC every day.

NYC subway cars can fit up to 200 people.

Based on the OP's information, we can assume at least one person on each subway car is playing on a Switch.

4.3 million / 200 = Nintendo is selling 21500 Switches in New York every day.

21500 x 364 days in a year = Nintendo will sell almost 8 million Switches in New York ALONE this year. Wow!

Damn, I think it depends where you live, but it's fun to see people saying "Wow awesome I saw someone playing handheld outside of his home", I mean, they are made for that, no?

Well here in France too in happens that people steal other people stuff, but I see sometimes people playing on 3DS or something like that, I always play the VITA or 3DS when I take train, in bus I don't because most of time I stand up that's the only reason.

I don't get why people are alright to put out their 800/900€/$ phone, but their 120/150€/$ (or 300 for the Switch), "WHAT are you crazy?! It's an INSANNNNNE amount of money, people will steal it from me!"... I mean, it's easier to steal a phone and run away with it since you're holding it with 1 hand but the handheld you hold it with 2 hands.

EDIT: OK everyone is thinking the same, that's reassuring. :D I actually had that discussion with some friends who thought serioustly that playing handheld outside was crazy, it would be stolen, so it's why I took all that seriously, there are REALLY people who think it's crazy to play handheld outside. :p

"Switch has made it"

Do people actually think like this, walking around in public and happily proclaiming victory in their head on behalf of an electronics company?

Saw a man in his late twenties / early thirties playing MarioKart on his Switch on London Underground the other day.
Now we can really declare 'the Switch has made it'.
