Sega Dreamcast - Appreciation and Emulation Thread

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Does anyone know offhand which Japanese DC games came in the slightly larger 12mm jewel cases vs the regular 10.4mm cd jewel cases? I need to replace a Sonic Adventure 2 case & want to buy a cheap throwaway game to get the case as there's no easy way to buy 'em over here in the US that I can tell.

Still looking for PAL cases too. Stupid custom cases.

Capcom vs SNK 2 had a bigger case, but if you throw that away for Sonic Adventure 2's sake, I will have to punch you in the head.

2. It switches between VGA and S-video/composite output (if you have those cables plugged into the VGA box). It's handy for tricking games that don't support 31khz VGA despite seemingly having no problems once past the initial check (you don't need to have cables plugged into the box to do this).

just to follow up: sadly, this didn't work for me. Hoyle Casino gave green screen, Dino Crisis a black one, Bagnai-O would start and then flicker into a mess, then nothing. starting to think it might be my VGA to HDMI converter, cause i can hear audio on all 3 like i bypassed it, but the image fails...either way, hopefully the Kenzai works out for me, just hoping this switch method makes this box fully serve my needs (once plugged into the XRGB directly from said Kenzai) so i don't have to shell out for a $60 Hanzo.

I wouldn't be throwing away the game, just taking it out its case ;) Anyway CvsSNK2 is still too much. How about Capcom Vs Snk Millenium Fight 2000? Thick or small case?

:)

No that's normal, nothing wrong with your converter! The trick doesn't work with many games.

Will the Kenzei replace the converter and are you using an XRGB Mini? If am following you correctly, you need the Hanzo (for 15/31khz) and the Kenzei (to sort out sync issues).

Does anyone have (or remember) Dreamcall?

It was a program that let you make calls via the Dreamcast modem.

The program made this hilarious noise to indicate it was dialing or had connected. It was sort of like BEEEZ-ZOW! and it sent me into hysterical laughter when I first heard it. Unfortunately, I first heard it at a presentation by Sega. The company was showing off Dreamcall to game journalists, and I had to leave the auditorium in order to compose myself.

I would pay real money for a sound sample of the Dreamcall connecting.

aw man, Woody - that's an awesome lineup! sounds like a great time man - i was so bummed a year or so back when a local arcade didn't get enough people to sign up for a Halloween Typing of the Dead contest, too.
Yeah, it was great fun! We had 7 people participate, split across 3 teams. By request we included Crazy Taxi at the last minute, which was a good decision. I hadn't played it in years!

Two of my friends showed their mad typing skills on Typing of the Dead. Unfortunately, they were on separate teams. I think at the next tourney we'll have a special exhibition with the two of them playing together. I've never seen the game played from start to finish.

(Speaking of which, the next retro tourney's gonna be on the Turbografx/PC Engine.)

After learning about the cancelled Agartha last night I've sifted through the entire list at Unseen64. Wow, seeing everything that almost was really gives me a new appreciation for the system. Had a PS2 and Gamecube which got most of the DC games I was interested in, and so paid little attention to the ones never ported.

To think of everything that would've come if it had just held on until 2002. Guess I should start with D2?

yes, exactly that - replace my HDMI converter, into an XRGB mini. dude selling says i can use the kenzai with my setup but if i wanna switch between RGB/VGA i'd need a Hanzo too...last i checked he said he should have the parts tuesday.

I'm having a problem with Dreamcast over VGA.

I have the Panasonic DT60 TV (no VGA support).

I bought a VGA-to-HDMI converter even though it specifically said on the box that Panasonic TVs were not compatible (I found nothing online, and had to give it a shot, the information could've been for older models, but it didn't work).

So, does anyone know of any solution to get that VGA signal converted to HDMI that would work on new (2013) Panasonic TVs?

RGB is okay, but I miss my VGA setup.

huh...not familiar with that converter, is it powered? ive been told the non-powered ones are troubled & don't work for many. i used this powered one, it works good for my needs but obviously non-VGA games don't work for me, which so far includes Bangia-o, Dino Crisis, Hoyle Casino & Radirgy. i'm talking to a guy who says he modded that VGA box (mine is the same) to plug directly into an XRGB & mods the switch to go from RGB to VGA, hoping he'll take a commission job for it. another guy says he might have region-free chips in the coming weeks, not sure if he'll install or not though.

anyway that might be your trouble there. if you want, i'm likely going to put up that very HDMI converter i linked to for sale once i get this setup going over here.

USB-powered, which I thought was very convenient if it worked, as I could plug it into the TV USB-socket, but no. I don't know the reason for it not working, but according to the box it's a 'compatibility problem', which suggests something different than just the power source.

I regrettably sold my Dreamcast years ago with around 30 games, keyboard, lightgun, etc, when I needed cash.

I'm about to purchase another, it's in perfect condition, boxed and has been with the owner since new.

He no longer has a need for it and when I mentioned I was after one, he has offered it to me.

Boxed Pal dreamcast
Keyboard
Mouse
2 Pads
2 VMU's
Lightgun
31 Common and easy to find PAL games all boxed/instructions
10 Jap games

I also have the opportunity to buy some more rarer/hard to find titles from him and was wondering what you guys would price them at?

(All games are PAL boxed with instructions, unless otherwise stated)

Resident Evil 2
D2 (NTSC)
Crazy Taxi 2
Bangai-o
Atari Anniversary Edition (NTSC)
Gauntlet Legends
Death Crimson OX (NTSC)
Nightmare Creatures II
Virtua Cop 2 (JAP)
Zombie Revenge
Wacky Races
Looney Tunes Space Race
Le Mans 24 Hours
GTA 2
Tokyo Highway Challenge 2
Pro-Pinball Trilogy
Star Wars Episode 1 racer

So as above not sure what to value these at?

Hey guys.

I recently bought an NTSC boxed unopened Dreamcast on eBay, I just received it today.

Everything seems new and legit, although there are some marks and a some tiny dirt marks on the controller. Everything was packed in and sealed in those plastic bags, is it possible that the controller would have any kind of marks etc without apparently ever been out of the box? The system had the demo disk and web disk still looking sealed etc.

I don't know what to think, could it be a refurb or something? Maybe the guy did take it out briefly at one point?

It could be settled dust or dirt. The consoles are also handled during production but with gloves. I once got a long dark hair in a sealed PSP I bought. Thumbprints are sometimes likely.

Overall the console looks new, and it definitely looks way better than the second hand PAL console I bought years ago. The guy also offered a small refund. Although, when I got home tonight, I had a better look and went to plug it in to test...And I found that the damn AC Power cable is missing! Ughhh..

I am really picky with what sellers I buy from on eBay and have never had any problems. This guy has 100% feedback etc. The box the system came in was a little worn, but he noted that on the auction and I was going to open it anyway, so I thought this would be alright.

I'm going to contact the seller again and see what he says.

So I've got a Hanzo, and I've tested it and know it works great with one of my TVs that's got VGA input. The trouble is, I need to keep my DC in the living room, and that TV (Sony w802a) doesn't take VGA input. So I picked this up off of Monoprice (VGA & R/L Stereo Audio to HDMI Converter w/ DC Adapter) but I'm having some issues with it.

First and foremost, the video signal randomly cuts out every 10-45 seconds, which alone makes it unusable. But additionally, the audio quality when the signal is working is pretty terrible.

Does anyone else have experience with this particular VGA to HDMI converter from Monoprice? Have you experienced the intermittent blackout issue I'm seeing? Mainly I can't tell whether it's a faulty unit or if I just need to find a different converter altogether.

I did test the converter with the VGA output from a PC laptop, and that worked with no issues. And like I said, the Hanzo works just fine on a TV with native VGA...

Alternatively, if you've had a great experience with a sub-$50 converter, feel free to recommend it.

UPDATE: I got it working now, and it looks great! I returned my monoprice VGA-to-HDMI adapter for a replacement on the off chance that it was indeed faulty (the person on chat support was incredibly helpful and made the process super painless), and I also upgraded to significanltly higher quality (i.e., much better shielded) VGA & audio cables. Not sure which of those was the winning factor (though my gut says it was the cables), but it's working great now. If you're having similar trouble to what I described, hopefully trying some of these troubleshooting steps will help.

I've been looking into s video cables for my Dreamcast, but I guess most of them are crap. Are those Retrobit VGA S Video Adapters any good? I was thinking of buying one just for the s video, so I can hook it up to my CRT TV, which doesn't have VGA.

Cannon Spike worth its ~$50/60 asking price?

i really love this game - lotta capcom love, and it's action/almost SHMUPy? - but i picked it up again a few weeks back for $45 shipped on amazon, and that's as high as i would go. you can find it around if you look man!

the ones that i can't find lower than $50-60 myself are Cosmic Smash and Project Justice.

I hadn't thought to check amazon. Tons of copies of Gunspike (the Japanese version) for $40 + shipping. Hmmm. :)

I have a review copy of Project Justice that I can't play because it requires a GDRom key disk :(

^wait, i'm getting my DC chipped for region-free, not sure if it'd work somehow with that? if so i'd buy it off you! heh

Nope, not a region coding thing - press review discs were properly burned GD-Rs that required an official Sega development disc to run. They're out there to buy if you hunt around... I just haven't bothered yet.

The review GDRoms look like these.

There's other review discs that /are/ just burned CDRs & run with a modchip or region free bootdisc..

I see a lot of talk about these HD converters. Is there a benefit to the resolution if you have a TV that has both AV and HDMI imputs? Please excuse if this is a stupid question. Should I be investing in one?

Yeah, generally these upscaler boxes help make your games not look like minced ass on a modern display, assuming your source cables are good (i.e. RGB, or in the DC's case, VGA)

18 Wheeler is great! I'm having lots of fun with it, although I remember the arcade version looking better. It's a NAOMI game, not a NAOMI 2 or GD-ROM game, so the DC version should be pretty close - so maybe I'm just remembering incorrectly. Sunglasses are still on the dash, which is the most important part anyway.

The game is still pretty cheap and a very unique arcade driving game. The Parking bonus mode is a great time, too

Always loved playing the arcasde version. Could never get the hang of it. I will admit that there is nothing like cruising down the road with all that weight behind ya

Is it still cheaper to just get Blue Stinger JP version? I know its not expensive or anything, but i've read that the majority of the game is in english regardless of the version you pick up.
