the click and thought it was just 1 of 3 i needed to do so I kept playing around it. I also called the Toy Recall line thinking that number was a hint and kept trying to really specifically place the digits to the ones in the recall phone number that was given out :lol
same here. I gave up on that when I noticed that the numbers were largely illegible.
Something that I've been meaning to mention: has anyone else been having a problem with the TINY LITTLE TEXT in the text messages? I only have a 20 inch screen, but reading the text messages are damned near impossible. It's been driving me NUTS on how it's such a pain to read most of those. I wish there was a way to increase the font size...
Just picked up the game. It's VERY strange, indeed.

You guys were right. My opinions on this game are so incredibly lop-sided that I do not blame anyone for completely ignoring my posts. Whatever. I'm on my third playthrough, and while my complaints still stand, I'm starting to appreciate the plain yet spooky atmosphere and what story is there. This game is like Final Fantasy XII. It has a very bare-bones plot, but when you actually do some investigative work, you start learning a lot about-- not necessarily Silent Hill itself, but some of the horrible things that have happened in the town. Thing is, and this sort of goes back to those old tag-lines that say "every town has a secret," well, this time it's more like learning about what has happened to residents of the town and it's not unrealistic at all. They're the sort of articles you would read in a normal newspaper and while I think the way that various "cues" are implemented are absolutely piss poor, the actual information you get from them can be cool sometimes.
Also, I'm going to half-bite on something else. I've stated before that the icy otherworld lacks interesting art direction. While I don't think I'm largely incorrect, I have made effort to analyze the frozen environments even more than on my 2nd playthrough, and there is some really cool stuff encased in the ice. One of my favorite things is
in a Midwich classroom, you see a bunch of scrawling on the walls explaining the DNA double-helix model and behind the ice you see all the student desks twisted in a double-helix position
. I felt there needed to be a lot more cool stuff like this, but the game isn't completely vacant of stuff like this so I stand corrected. But the major problem is still the fact that you aren't given the opportunity to truly appreciate these things because you're always on the run. Had Climax given us an unlockable that maybe allowed the player to either explore the icy worlds creature-free, or at least let you tone down the number of them and the frequency in which they appear I may have relaxed my negativity but this is not the case.
It's still not my ideal Silent Hill and I still have a bucketload of issues with the game and it's still not scary, but I think the game nails its own tone and atmosphere and what it does, it does well. I'm okay with it to the point where I do want to see them, just like Double Helix with Homecoming, take another stab at it. Both games I felt were experimental, and it must have felt like the weight of the world, and brandonh83 crushing them during development, but now that each studio has gotten their feet wet, I'd like for them to fix what needs to be fixed and just flop their balls out on the table and make some honest to god Silent Hill games and keep the series alive with new ideas, concepts, and better execution of such. It almost happened here.

Since I've already spoiled the ending for myself, could I request a PM with more info on these horrible things that have happened to the people of Silent Hill?

Am I the only one who's really, really tired of the whole cult aspect of Silent Hill? It is, in my opinion, the weakest part of the whole lore and saps the otherworld of what makes it interesting in the first place.

I could see why people would dislike the cult aspect, but personally I'd like more of it, to get more of their beliefs and lore fleshed out, getting more info on Lobsel Vith and Xuchi.. Xubchil.. whatever the other guy was called and on the malevolent power native to the area.

We never did get to find out much about Valtiel from SH3.
Though perhaps thats a good thing. That was easily one of the scariest parts of the game for me, that one faceless creature crawling around in the background turning valves and mutilating women. He spreads 'dem legs on Heather as well.
If you're interested in this game, do yourself a favor and don't wait for the PS2 version and just grab the Wii one. I can't imagine this game being nearly as good without the Wii remote flashlight and particularly the speaker. Every single puzzle or interaction in this game uses the pointer or the tilt, the game must be pretty sterile and dull on the PS2 without the fidelity of using those controls...
That being said, the PSP version may be alright simple 'cause the graphics are likely a beast for that system and Origins wasnt bad. Though I bet the chase sequences arent hurt on the PS2, considering how iffy the 'thrust them off me' motion is on Wii.
'asides, the graphics are certainly a strong point in this version so I wouldnt want to lose that either

Valtiel was creepy. Not as terrifying as Pyramid Head, but still a rather unsettling character. I quite like the Butcher in 0rigins too.
And spreading legs? What? That's something I honestly can't remember :lol
That said, I always had a suspicion Heather was the kind of girl that would spread dem legs for everyone, probably even Pyramid Head, if he asked nicely

Beat it! What an awesome experience this game has been.
How many different endings are there, what are the trigger points for a different ending? I'm not even sure what big choices there were to make that would particularly make anything different....
. HQ should be up shortly. I was actually surprised how much everything changed from my first run despite how I was trying to play about the same. I might try for the UFO ending next. I managed to summon them, so I'll do it again next time.
In any case, I really liked the game, but it's still not my GOTY, that's still Little King's Story, but to be fair, thats alot to live up to.
I just watched your ending, similiar but not the one I got...
Cheryl doesnt say "you were always with me" and Harry doesnt bend down, he just looks at her sad and says "you have to let me go" and then she walks out and hugs her mom and they leave together... then the scene cuts and Dhalia mom is a super bitch who keeps slapping Harry down calling him worthless. what's up with that?! :lol
Started the day on sunday and finished it on the same day. I'm still not really sure what to think about, but I definitely didn't dislike it. Otherwise I wouldn't have finished it in merely one day, I guess. It's not scary but at least very atmospheric. Though, in the end, it's not really that much fun to play and the nightmare sequences are annoying at best. On the other hand, the story is excellently executed and the ending a work of a genius. Especially because everything makes so damn much sense after it. I really liked Climax' approach.
Anyway, I am sure about one thing and that is: Konami should make Climax to the new main developer of the series. While SM is far from perfect its prbably the most ambitious horror game I played in years and they really tried to make something new. I'm sure they are able to make a really good game in the future. If the next SH game will be developed by Double Helix again instead of Climax I will cry ;( For sure the best thing would be a SH by Team Silent, but we all know that this team does not exist anymore.

Finally someone who speaks about that issue. I started to think that I only imagined this problem! :lol And really, I would go as far as to say that it nearly ruined the experience for me. I was unable to really enjoy reading all of these text messages and therefore to enjoy all these little background stories, because I was just unable to read them. It was a pain.
Just finished my third playthrough a while ago. Definitely enjoyed it more. Definitely still have the same issues, but I've warmed up (cooled up?) to the atmosphere at least, and I think the last 20 minutes or so are brilliant. I would love the option to explore the icy sections in order to appreciate them better and be further creeped out.
As I pointed out, it's weird since they got SH3 so far in advance of everywhere else. Maybe it bombed really bad over there and they haven't bothered since.
You forgot Silent Hill 4 and Silent Hill Homecoming, both of which are good games. I only say this because despite that many people dislike Homecoming, a lot of people still thought it was pretty good, if flawed. But definitely worth playing. SH4 has some annoyances but the apartment is scary as hell and the story is cool.

Yeah, but the guy mentioned only SH1-3, which is why I only included those + 0rigins
SH4 is good, although it has its fair share of flaws (mainly the annoying, unkillable ghosts, the horrible inventory system and that damn escort mission). I didn't really like Homecoming that much, not because the plot or the graphics or anything like that was bad (well, admittedly the character models didn't impress me nearly as much as SH3 did), but I hated the combat and how the game was so uneven in how it would provide you with ammunition and health drinks compared to the older games in the series.
I think this is the best Silent Hill experience in a long time. Climax should be very proud of themselves, I hope they already have the contract for the next game... it be a massive waste to let this engine vanish, and they clearly have very well grounded ideas to re-imagine what it means to be Silent Hill.
And I vote Dr. K as one of the best new characters in gaming circa 2009 :lol
There is absolutely 0 connection at all from SM to any of the previous SHs, it's a totally standalone videogame that only bares a spec sheet of resemblance to the first game, i.e. character names and the town name. Hell, SH in SM is in Upstate New York for starters :lol
It's better this way, actually... it's very.... JJ Abrams Star Trek in that we now have a "parallel dimension" if you will, to satisfy both camps. You have your old Silent Hill 1-Homecoming and that lore and now you have this "re-imaging" that's whole independent and can really be it's own series.
And I agree... SH:SM has some amazing voice acting, particularly Dr. K!

They even moved the location of the city itself? :lol I'm actually looking forward to playing this. Still wary of it, considering it's such a radical departure from the older games, but it should be an interesting experience. Either way, it can't be worse than SH: Play Novel, at least :lol
We definitely need another survival horror title on the Wii.. so, after a week of play time.. what should we pick up Cursed Mountain, or Shattered Memories? I'm leaning toward SM, based on a few of the gameplay videos.
I was actually really surprised at how non-explicit the game was, in both dialogue and in terms of actual violence. It's quite refreshing to play a horror game that doesn't focus on such obvious extremes.

Going by the response I've seen online for both games, SM would probably be the best choice. Cursed Mountain seems to have gotten overall low scores and mediocre response from the people who played it.
They ripped this game apart on The Geekbox. There are some spoilers, so beware if you are going to listen (nothing big, they hinted at something at the end, that may or maybe not happen... I haven't played the game). They liked the graphics, acting, and presentation, but hated the chase scenes and the gameplay. They thought the story was bullshit as well.
I gotta say, the game was actually really awesome.
at first I hated it. I did not like the controls, the map system was ass, and the nightmare parts were horrible...
that was thrusday... finally picked it back up today.
I adjusted to the controls so I was ok with that.
map still sucks... so I jus stopped using it, as I think most ppl should when playing this game. Once u get into nightmare mode, dont even bother with the map. Just run... dont even think, jus keep running til you miraculously reach the exit.
the game is designed well enough so you wont get lost, and it's crazy how they can deliver such a good game based around no other game mechanic other than jus walking around and looking at things. The story does a great job at taking inspiration from established SH characteristics and flipping them in a new way, and the game is short enough to not piss a gamer off for hours of aimless wandering.
overall great game for both silent hill and gamers looking for a more horror type of game. Definitely do not go into the game thinking it will build upon establish SH lore, but really try to appreciate the game for what it is trying to do.
I got stuck here too but the path is kind of easy to miss if you're not paying close attention.
If I'm not mistaken, go past the
first cabin (the one with the dead fish in the lake) and continue walking up the narrow snowy path until you see a sign on the left side of the screen up ahead (you'll be approaching it so you'll see the backside of the sign). When you get to the sign make an immediate left turn and walk up until you see a static ghostly image, I think it is on the left side of the screen.
There's like 3 cabins you have to go through. The one right near the cop car, then there's one by the water (after you go through that one, look on the ground... there should be some sort of trail. Follow it) If you keep going, you should eventually reach a third cabin which is where you're supposed to go.

Okay please help if you can--I pass the first 2 cabins, reach a water pump station or whatever, climb down the ladder, run through a couple of rooms, then back out, over a fence, and then where now?

You need to reach the cabin on the right side of the map (there are actually 2 ways to get there), and then go through the cabin, exiting from the north. You'll know you're on the right path if you see a small bridge (crossing the river on the map).

You know what forget it. I tried all of that and still ended up lost or back at one of the other cabins. I did find a couple of mementos but I still can't figure out how to get to the other cabin and I feel like I'm just wasting my time.
Trading this in tomorrow or Tuesday seriously. What was the twist at the end? Someone put it in spoilers for me please.
