I can't wait for the inevitable scandals in Looking For Groomers.
It's insane to me that they will do these incubation projects like this, Concord, Fairgame$, and Blundell's studio…. But didn't go all out to acquire the one studio who actually delivered a successful GaaS. Now Tencent has their tentacles in Arrowhead and it's probably too late.
Sony has consistently produced both, the narrative that they abandonded SP games is stupid.
For all the shit we give to an obssesive GAAS evangelizer likeMen_in_Boxes , fuck me, the single player diehards on this forum are even more fucking ridiculous.
They do own the IP at least so there is that. Maybe they studio just wasn't looking to be fully bought out.
i thought it is not the real thing, but dang, it's their own wordsOur first game is a team-based action game that draws inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games. Players will inhabit a lighthearted, comedic world set in brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe. We can't wait to reveal more.

I find it crazier that Sony is so focused on GAAS, that even with all the money lost doing it (Bungie $3.6 billion which $1.2 billion went out the door with retention fees and D2 sales tanking), Concord, all the other GAAS games and studios shut down the past couple years - that after buying and shutting down Jason Blundell's Deviation Games (the studio whose home page cared more about watching 3D movies and bowling), they offered him another chance internally with a new studio. It's insane to me that they will do these incubation projects like this, Concord, Fairgame$, and Blundell's studio…. Here is the problem. Multiplayer games start cannibalizing each other after a while. people can only play so many and they tend to play what their friends are playing. hence why Epic spends billions of dollars a year to keep people in Fortnite by any means necessary. It doesn't make any sense to spend gazillions of dollars working on 800 different multiplayer games. Your game also has to be amazingly spectacular to get people to stop playing Fortnite and that is really hard to do especially for a new team. Does Sony want people to drop Helldivers 2 to play this shit? That doesn't make any sense. Figure out ways to grow Helldivers 2 and keep people in Helldivers 2.Sony has consistently produced both, the narrative that they abandonded SP games is stupid.

Unless there's some big new IP in the works that will for sure release this gen, the only big new IP is Intergalactic. And nobody even knows if it'll release this gen. It might come out when PS6 releases. They've abandoned new single player IPs
Last gen we've got GOW reboot, Spiderman, Bloodborne, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, The Order 1887, Death Stranding and more.
This gen we only got Returnal. And thats it. They are only producing sequels and remakes. And that would be ok if we had a new singleplayer IP here and there, but we dont. Sequels are fine, but they feel like more of the same.
Their next big titles? You guessed, sequels. Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei.
They are only financing new IPs that are GAAS. And this doesnt make any f*cking sense, since their bread and butter was always singleplayer.
No idea, so I asked Sora to create a PS5 Box art for their descrption of "a team-based action game that draws inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games. Players will inhabit a lighthearted, comedic world set in brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe"wtf kinda slop is a "frog-type game"
Some of you are never satisfied.Unless there's some big new IP in the works that will for sure release this gen, the only big new IP is Intergalactic. And nobody even knows if it'll release this gen. It might come out when PS6 releases.
Sony tried this strategy of shotgunning a million MP shooter games on PS3 and it failed. While every other big company had 1 or 2 shooter franchises to focus on at the time (and Nintendo had none), Sony probably released as many or more shooter franchises than MS, EA, Activision combined. Here is the problem. Multiplayer games start cannibalizing each other after a while. people can only play so many and they tend to play what their friends are playing. hence why Epic spends billions of dollars a year to keep people in Fortnite by any means necessary. Like, EA was right to cancel the Titanfall extraction shooter. It makes more sense to build that mode in Apex and keep people in Apex.
What is the most common thing with all those games you mentioned? They're all (third-person) shooters. Here is the problem. The definition of goalpost moving. "Sony hasn't abandoned single-player games, only new single-player IPs!".They've abandoned new single player IPs

I still don't know wtf a frog-type game is, and this blog post 2 years later still uses that term.
Yeah, wherever these people are now you can STAY UNDER THAT ROCK and don't come out. Specially you, James.
Well, they're not all and just third person shooters. Fortnite is much more than a third person shooter at this point because, again, Epic is trying to keep people in this game. They have acquired studios and had those studios build their games into Fortnite so instead of say leaving Fortnite to play game XYZ they play that mode in Fortnite. GTA Online has also implemented a lot of stuff into the game for a similar reason. What is the most common thing with all those games you mentioned? They're all (third-person) shooters.
It's why Gran Turismo 7, Helldivers 2 and MLB The Show are all able to coexist, multiplayer games in general will not inherently compete with each other. And sure, I can agree that Sony producing several shooters was not the best idea, but Team LFG's project isn't like that by the sounds of it.
The problem with this kind of thinking is the assumption that these big companies haven't already thought of that, studied that, discussed that, monitored that, and hired firms to consult on that. Here is the problem. Multiplayer games start cannibalizing each other after a while.
Apologies I shouldn't have said single player titles, simply because Sony published a bunch of great multiplayer games during that era too.Sony has consistently produced both, the narrative that they abandonded SP games is stupid.

It's the assumption that you (the collective gamer) has considered an angle that these massively successful, massively profitable companies haven't.
This is good. Get these studios to make your GAAS and leave your flagpole studios like Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica and SuckerPunch on what they do best with single-player games.
The "LFG" in "teamLFG" stands for "Looking For Group." We are driven by a mission to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging.
Has to be a money laundering scheme, no way they are this stupid right?Western headquarters of Sony is killing Sony gaming. Nintendo is the only remaining company very based.
Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade and LSA arent first party. I believe it was pretty obvious why I havent mentioned them (you can exclude Death Stranding from my post then, forgot Kojima was solo)What is the most common thing with all those games you mentioned? They're all (third-person) shooters.

This is what happens when your games sell in the 10-20M range and not in the 5M< range like they used to, this is why Polyphony Digital (Sony's most important studio) has only been doing Gran Turismo for the past 25 years.
And fuck me if Spider-Man and God of War somehow count more than Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade and Lost Soul Aside; without mentioning actual stuff made internally like Saros and Intergalactic.

It's like a gambler at a casino. Starts with big bankroll. Blows a chunk right away losing on Bungie, blows more on small studio bets. He already took some lumps. But gets lucky winning some cash back with Helldivers 2. Still down, but a small rebound. Instead of going home with a loss and some money still in his pockets, just keeps going all night. Still trying to break the casino making it back, he's willing to go to the last penny. It's obvious he's not a good blackjack player as he loses almost all the hands, but he keeps playing.
Well there's frogger...and uhm...I'm sure there's 3d cartoon platformers from the oversaturation days of that genre that had a frog or something!wtf kinda slop is a "frog-type game"
Yeah, of course, Fortnite is more akin to a general platform like Roblox these days. It doesn't completely negate my point, though.Well, they're not all and just third person shooters. Fortnite is much more than a third person shooter at this point because, again, Epic is trying to keep people in this game. They have acquired studios and had those studios build their games into Fortnite so instead of say leaving Fortnite to play game XYZ they play that mode in Fortnite. Right, I already said that Sony focusing on similar type of games for this initiative isn't the best idea. The only thing hoping is for this to go for another niche that doesn't necessarily have to overlap with Helldivers or Destiny.Yea, Gran Turismo 7 people are not going to pick up MLB The Show. That is obvious. But let's look at this. Right now Sony has Destiny 2 and Helldivers 2. I know Destiny 2 is long in the tooth but then they have Marathon coming out in a few months. Then they have whatever the fuck Fairgame% is, but it seems like another action game. This is another action game with elements of other games people already play. So, I don't know. That's five action games. How many battle passes do they expect Sony fans to grind every night.
The studio has been existing for a year making a project that was in development before they were established, now separate from Bungie's questionable management.Apologies I shouldn't have said single player titles, simply because Sony published a bunch of great multiplayer games during that era too.
That being said, Sony's output this generation has been dog shit compared to previous generations and they even double down on things they have a bad track record in.
First they released a couple of crap multiplayer titles that crashed and burned (destruction all stars and that fucking foam shit they released a couple years ago) and then dropped Concord, arguably one of the biggest disasters in modern entertainment. Now they're on the brink of releasing Marathon, which (to put it as nicely as possible) hasn't had much good press at all. To open another studio for multiplayer games despite these failures is scratch head worthy at best.
Considering that a good chunk of these flopped back in the day, I don't think it helps the argument that much.I'm fully aware that they haven't abandoned single player titles, but this chase for the next big multiplayer game isn't doing them any favours. I think they would be better off going back to making a good game with both single and multiplayer modes using an existing IP (Killzone, Warhawk, Twisted Metal, Wipeout, Resistance, take your pick) and reducing their risks.
Yet Spider-Man 2018 somehow is? Say all you want about them not owning the IPs, it's completely ignoring the fact that they're basically funding and publishing them, which should be exactly what you want.Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade and LSA arent first party. I believe it was pretty obvious why I havent mentioned them (you can exclude Death Stranding from my post then, forgot Kojima was solo)
"They are only producing sequels and remakes" is inherently false, thank you.Saros and Intergalactic dont even have release dates yet. And you talk about me moving goalposts.
It's easier said than done when games just take a lot more to make these days. If your disappointment is purely about the lack of new single-player IPs, major publisher output is not where you should be looking at.Yeah, keep making sequels to your million sellers, of course. But keep pumping new singleplayer IPs. Saros, Intergalactic and Returnal make for 3 IPs. How many we've got last gen in comparison?
Sony Japan gave us stuff like Everybody's Golf Online and The Tomorrow Children, which both had their servers killed soon after.Western headquarters of Sony is killing Sony gaming development. Nintendo is the only remaining company very based.
We can only assume they're intelligently run judging from the fact that they've outcompeted 99.999 percent of their competitors over the last 30 years. The problem with this kind of thinking is the assumption that these big companies are intelligently run. Quite often they're not and they run on inertia and trend-chasing.
We've seen this in the game industry many, many, many times.
Their first game is this.
