Sony President and CEO Hiroki Totoki says the PlayStation Portal has been a “strong and profitable peripheral” that they will continue to focus on

I assume it showed Sony that even for their ecosystem, the demand for a portable option is high

It's a reasonably good if limited device. I have hopes for a better, more capable follow up some day.

The biggest update it could get would be to allow it to stream your purchased games like you can already on PS5

what do they estimate. 2mill units? meh. i understand they are saying its profitable but its not mainstream in my eyes so niche confirmed. both can be true. It just made me frustrated seeing it as a streaming only device. I want a dedicated PS hand held i can play w/o internet connection

according to most recent estimatesd around 3 percent of the ps5 install base so 2.5 million ish to date. It's a great device especially after they added ps plus streaming to it, literally all you need is wifi and you can play 100+ ps5/ps2 games at 1080p on the go.

It's such a wonderful little device. As a first-time dad, this single-handedly saved my gaming hobby for me for the first few years. Nothing sweeter than doing the night shift playing Helldivers 2 on the Portal while you watch the babies sleeping in their cots.

It already can. They made a stealth update and you can stream games if you have the relevant tier of PSN+ directly from the internet without connecting to a PS5.

Not just your purchased games. Any games available for streaming on the relevant PSN+ tier can be streamed I believe.

Sure about that? I don't think you can play purchased games without streaming directly from the console.

Well, I figured it would fail terribly. I accept I was wrong on it. It's still not for me but that's not the point. Enjoy portal fans!

Well, it's the same old story: on the forums, it was a pointless product that no one wanted, but then it goes on sale and it's been the biggest money-making peripheral in the US for months.

It wasn't a stealth update, btw.

Is this a tease?
C'mon man, don't tease us like that...😁

Throw us a bone here : are we talking about an upgrade with an OLED screen and Wifi 6 or something else entirely ?

My only gripe with the Portal is the shitty wifi5, not the screen (which is pretty good for an LCD) nor the lack of BT.
A full blown PS handheld is coming

Ah yes, thanks Heis - although I think that it was common knowledge for us nerds by now 😁

Could you give us a guesstimate /timeframe ? Is it gonna be soon or...?

Cheers

PS : Not that the thing is gonna cost near the 200 Eurodollars of the portal but...
(I'm about to get one again for 160 used in mint condition).

It's the device I didn't know I wanted. None of the current portables are really portable these days, but at least this one is the most comfortable to hold. Holding a switch gives me cramps after a few minutes.

Portal oled + improved battery life is all i want, that will tide me over until a proper playstation haneheld arrives.

That's a sure thing, but I'm wondering if you have your own sources on that?
I do

True it wont fall in the Portal pricing so I guess its not a real refresh of the Portal

Timing wise somewhere around PS6 launch

I imagine the portal has very good margins. Not a great thing for consumers, but Sony doesn't have much incentive to sell it for less. It's good at what it does, but there isn't much to it from a components stand point.

The 3DS for sure gave me legit hand cramps. Switch has only been an issue when playing BoTW and TotK, as I tended to have really long gaming sessions.

Nope, currently it can only stream PS Extra games (and not all of them)

I just like the crazy concept. Gamers HATE cloud gaming.. so Sony creates a device that makes you cloud in cloud gaming.

PS Portal is a great piece of technology and can be a template for PSP if it makes a comeback. A PS Portal with PSP feature will be fantastic and will be day one for me.

It has been a good device mainly for the better half, as she doesn't schedule her gaming time as a casual but has used the device when she does, just like she used the WiiU offscreen play too.

For me the device has too much lag in games like eFootball and the lack of ability to have two or more profiles permanently paired at once means I rarely bother to with it - knowing the better half will have the same hassle. So I have considered boxing and trading. Think they missed a huge trick to make it the PS Vita 2 when if they made a clip to hold a smartphone underneath with the phone doing hdmi video out over USB-c to the screen, and allow a smartphone app to be the console with portable vita 2 store, and the portal to be a dumb screen and controls, giving the best of both worlds as a PlayStation Portal but with a Switch local console power.

Just release a rear ssd drive with usb c plug that allows to store and run PS1, PSP and PS2 games natively, there is an huge amount of place under it, do it.

Local streaming is cool, solves the latency issues of Cloud, and makes it easier to share the living room TV.

Only thing I want is for them to do a portable that supports local streaming, or make a mobile/tablet accessory that attaches on the broken up dual-shock controller design from the Portal.
