Splatoon |OT| Squidstyler

Awesome OT! I don't own a Wii-U and I'm not buying Splatoon just yet but I'm thinking about buying both just to play this game. Gonna wait a month or two to see how everything pans out, especially the coming updates. But yeah, this game has a ton going for it. I hope it both sells well and becomes a huge hit.
There's a Best Buy bundle with your name on it, more so since the reviews have mostly been 8's & 9's with the occasional 7 (a pleasant surprise for me). And there's tons of other Wii U games worth buying right now to go with Splatoon (3D World, Smash 4, Mario Kart 8, Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101, etc.).

I'm sorry to keep harping on this, but the whole GAME truck story + pre-ordering hijinks are really rubbing me the wrong way still. Please allow me to vent my frustrations fellow Gaffers; I promise I'll stop after this.

Here goes:

- If all Splatoon stock was on that truck, like the email mentions, why are they selling the regular game in stores as we speak? And why can they still deliver the two Inkling amiibo's to me despite the theft? Oh, and why are they so sure they will never get any replacements from Nintendo? I feel that this whole stolen truck story could be a lie to cover up a lack of stock for just the squid bundle or something.

- Also, why are they still waiting till Friday to ship me my regular game when that version is already being sold in their damn stores? Why can't I go into a GAME store with my order form and email mentioning the replacement deal and pick up the game in advance while they sort out the rest and make sure I get my amiibo on Friday? Feels really unfair that the customer who pre-ordered the game as soon as possibe now has to wait the longest to get it.

After Amazon's screw up with my faulty, irreplaceable (pre-ordered) Wario amiibo and now this I'm getting really fed up with both amiibo's and online retailers in general.

Whoa, for real? Man, while I'm sure it will, I hope it doesn't affect in-store pre-orders as well. :S

While I hope not for your sake, it would be a slap in the face to customers like me to still sell it in store when supposedly all of the Splatoon stock was on that stolen lorry. Do let us know if you were able to get it though - if only so we can hassle GAME about it some more.

So how are people reacting to the 4 hour map rotation setup. Had a blast playing the two maps in the test fire but I'm not sure if it's really the best way to go around it in the final product. Especially it being 4 freaking hours instead of a more understandable 2 hours.

Here you can play 1 hour session, take a break for 2 hours and still come back for 1 more hour of the same maps again.
I don't mind the rotation, but 4 hours seems a bit too much. Maybe 2 hours would be better. I think.

It's terrible. I can understand a smaller map rotation but just two is two small, especially when it doesn't alternate but plays the same one over and over and over and over and over and then switches and then switchers back and then stays on it over and over and over.

Nice OP/OT.

I am getting concerined though as i have the edition with the three amiibos on order & i have not had a dispatch notification yet.

managed to get on the first BETA thing a few weeks back but the server always seemed to be down with the one a few days ago.

Found out why i have not had a dispatch email, instead i got this :@

My small time Walmart, a town of 2000 people, has a place open for splatoon already in the games section, though it's empty currently. I was scared they wouldn't have it though so I'm exited! I honestly expect it to sell better than what alot of people on gaf have been predicting, not amazing but very solid. I've been seeing alot of hype for it recently.

I hope they shorten the transition period once more maps become available. It's going to be a bit more arduous what with 13+ maps to eventually want to choose from.

Added myself to the spreadsheet. Shouldn't there be a separate column for Miiverse nickname? That's what people will be showing up as in-game instead of their NNIDs... although I suppose if you add someone via their NNID, you'll then learn their Miiverse nickname, too...

Quick Question,

Can my fiancee and I both play online together from the same console?
Or are we only going to be able to play that one mode?

Waiting for my t-shirt + squid LE!

Added myself to the spreadsheet, my time is CEST (GMT+1) but being an adult I mostly play at night so I welcome US GAF to join me as well :)

No, only in that one mode.

There's no two-player online mode like in Mario Kart 8. It would be neat, but at the same time the player without the gamepad would be at a disadvantage.

bummer

I hate going "i bought this cool game i think you will really like, but we can't play it together"

Same thinking here, pretty much. I guess the best bet is if we get the game to switch off turns online (apart from the 1v1 mode, or taking turns doing the SP).

After playing for a long while with Gyros (got to level 8) I can say gyro is the way to go as it makes it so much faster to cover the area with ink. Do it folks lol XP

Wait...the regular multiplayer battle mode is online only, and the only local online is a 1v1 balloon minigame thing??? If so that suckkkks.

I'm the only one of my friends with a wiiu, and they all come over to play kart/smash/nintendoland/etc all the time. I've been hyping them on Splatoon all year. I never considered you couldn't do 4 player local with pro controllers.

Just spoke to them and they said it affects everyone across the board, so no dice on my end.

EDIT: Just pre-ordered the special pack through Amazon so here's to hoping! :O

Hoping someone can answer this...

How does local play work? Does it support 4 controllers and do splitscreen?

I've got a bunch of friends playing games on Friday when this launches and is doing a stream of us playing. I'm tempted to buy in so we all have something to play together that's new and might get his stream some more hits but I'm not sure how the controls work.

We're going to create an extra account here for Turf War party play, where we pass the Gamepad after matches. Since the matches are so short, I think it will work out OK.

Nope. Just 1v1 offline and single-player online.

Every 10 games or so I get stuck in the lobby forever, so I have to turn off my Wii U to quit. Then, when I start it up again, everything is offline. For about half an hour. Super lame.

Still, despite launch pains, the game itself is fucking fantastic. I can't decide if I prefer rollers or not. I can't help but think it would be more fulfilling if you could actually communicate with your teammates in order to make sure they're taking care of opponents whilst you smother the ground.

True. I'm going to master gyro controls because it's more efficient when you're spreading ink if you use gyro+plus the stick. You spin super fast that way and it splats ink all over the place. It's so cool.

Think you may need to open some ports for the Wii U on your router, I used to have plenty of problems with online on the Wii U till I opened the ports on my router for it.

Well, had a rather pleasant first 45 mins with the game. Only played the Mall once and the Skatepark once, the other games were on more familiar maps.

Was quite a nice surprise that I started with the Jr, but I've swapped to the Splattershot for now to try to experiment a bit more. Wondering what's so good about the Tentatek version, since it seems a lot of players have that one.

Honestly, I don't even know what that means. I don't usually have any problems. My wifi is slow as fuck though. Like 1.8 mb. Game still runs silky smooth though, which is incredible.

Played 3 matches so far.
Haven't had any lag or anything, been really smooth, and I'm in Canada so I imagine most people with the game already are overseas. Not bad.

I tend to find my router (Virgin superhub) does not play well with any of my consoles, I opened the ports and everything has been smooth since, console connection wise.

I had some lag where it wouldn't ink where I shot at, but it was matches with primarily Japanese players but only that one instance.

Ugh. I still can't decide which version to get. Retail or digital. Anyone else having trouble making up their mind? Being able to play at midnight vs having the box art and a physical copy.
