For those that have the game; in the multiplayer lobby I have a pair of googly eyes and a green label saying "on fire +12.5" with loads of green squids on flags... Any idea what all that means?

That's your win streak. The higher it is, the more money you get from the cat, once per map turn.

Visit the cat in Inkopolis and you'll get 1,000 bonus coins. The higher your winning streak, the more coins you'll receive.
 
I think I may have waited too long for these Splatoon amiibos. I can't preorder them anywhere, and Amazon has yet to inform me of a restock.

I may get lucky and find the three pack in a local Best Buy, but we'll see.
 
Sorry if this has been covered, but how exactly does the local multiplayer in this game work? From what I'm seeing, it seems to be primarily geared towards online only 4 vs 4 matches. Would I not be able to play this with 3 of my buddies locally?

It's 1 vs 1 with one person on the TV and one on the Gamepad popping as many balloons for points as you can while getting items around the arenas.

You can also subtract points from the other person by killing them.

It's only 2 player.

I ordered the limited edition from the only Dutch retailer that I could find that still had preorders for it, and I just received a message that due to stock shortages I won't be getting mine on Friday.
They promise that I'll have my copy on Wednesday of next week due to securing some by "other means".
I wonder if they just ordered a bunch from Amazon to fulfil their orders. Lol

Guess I'm going to double dip and go digital on this after all as I certainly don't want to be Splatoonless this weekend.

Isn't that particular sort of comment thread in AC caused by telling another animal what the in thing is at some point? Game can sometimes generate fads by themselves I think but otherwise pretty sure that's a player suggested thing.

Excited for this game, hoping my copy comes tomorrow.

My God, it's less than 2 GB! Someone needs to tell Nintendo that their discs can hold 25GB. How do they do it? It furthers my theory that Nintendo games are actually magic. 3D World was the same, and I still don't believe it.

Not at the same time. It's a Gamepad-only game. We'll solve this here by creating an extra party account where we can pass the Gamepad to the next player after each round of Turf War. That worked well during the Testfire Demo.
 
I played for 4hours straight. This game is exciting! I think I played through 3/5th of the single player in 3hours and looking for scrolls. I missed some, they are well hidden. The further I progress the more I get Mario Galaxy vibes. Played 1hour of multiplayer, I dominate everyone lol. Level 6 already. I can tell I'm going to play this game for hours. All the maps are excellent, no stinker so far. Lots of japanese players of course.
Weird going back to the plazza at 30fps. Nintendo has spoilt me!
 
Has anyone had a chance to see the guide book for this game? Any good art in it making it worth picking up as a possible art book?

If I get the eShop version of the game (leaning a lot more in that direction as to not waste the gas on my day off. If I was picking this up after work this wouldn't have been an issue.) it could be nice to have it on the shelf to go in place of a game case as well as making a nice table book of sorts. The amiibos should be enough I know. Speaking of which walmart is still processing my three pack.
 
This has probably been answered before, but is there a reason there's only two maps at the moment? Maybe more will come up on the actual launch or something? (My copy came early from the UK online retailer that is banned)

The idea is to incentivize experimentation and management of loadouts for each map that's available. It's a decent idea in theory but I don't think 4 hours is an optimal amount of time for just two maps. It might feel shorter when the game eventually seems to offer three maps but it kinda seems like it should be made shorter down the line.

i keep seeing people in schoolgirl outfits with 1 main and 2 bonus slots.

it sucks i know but if you wait a while and switch your wii u off then on you might get lucky with a new map.
I've seen 3 now, really hope they add new ones quickly otherwise people will stop playing.

Maps rotate every 2 or 4 hours I think? And there are 5 maps.
 
Does anyone know if there's some way of getting new weapons other than from the weapon store? Maybe through single player? I've seen other players the same level that have weapons not available to me.

I'm level 11 and saw another level 11 player with the Aerosray MG, and another player had a 'Custom Splattershot Jr'. Not seen either of those in the store.

Yea, some scrolls in single player unlock weapons for multiplayer.

Ah right, thanks. It's actually just rotated. xD

I do think they need to lessen it. My friend and I have been playing it, were enjoying it but it was getting a bit dull being put on the same two maps over and over. I guess we started playing not long after it swapped before.

They might change it to 3 rotating once a couple more maps release.
 
Thanks for the response, guys! Much appreciated. Also, on a not-so-related note, my Splatoon 3-Pack will be here on Tuesday, so that's pretty rad. I'm pretty hyped for the game, and I've put off buying The Witcher because I know I'm going to spend a lot of time with this one.

This.

There are 5 maps. They rotate every four hours in pairs of two. Once there are more maps this number will increase to a set of three in the rotation.

Additional maps are going to be added over the coming weeks (don't let press fool you into thinking nothing happens until that August update, that is just the biggest one that adds new modes, too).
