Splatoon |OT| Squidstyler

Had my first ranked battles which didn't end in a K.O. yesterday, this was so good.

Such intense matches, we were loosing all the time (like 70:30), but in the end we somehow managed it not to die and even won. :D

But I still wish they update the offline-mutliplayer, so much potential. ;___;

Oh wow, thanks for sharing. I guess I should do the exercises after my thumb stops hurting. Hopefully tomorrow it'll be better, as of right now it really hurts.

I'm guessing applying ice in the mean time would be a good idea. I suppose I was doing a lot more force due to the gamepad's size.

Seen too many stories (and one personally) of people having thumb and wrist injuries from gaming, leading to a life of pain, surgery, and worst of all, not being able to play games! *gasp*

Take it easy, do some exercises, take some medicine, and be responsible, and you'll be fine.

So what exactly is the "Toasty" thing I'm seeing under my currency? Seems to go down every time I get disconnected from a match.

Ranked mode is so un-fun. It's really difficult, poorly balanced and the fact that you don't get experience points if you lose really discourages me from even wanting to play it.

Talk to the cat in the plaza. He'll give you some cash based on what level you got to during that map rotation.

There's definitely a hidden ELO ranking going on in regular. No doubt in my mind. Go create a new account and see how ridiculously easy the room is. Then when you carry and win 4-5 games straight, your level 3 guy will be in with level 10's. Tank with a new character for 4-5 games and you'll still be in with the 1-5's.

Yes, I suspect this was actually changed in the update a few days ago. Now I usually play with players around my own level even in Turf War. When I started playing Splatoon a week ago, I remember every Turf War battle seemed pretty random in terms of ranking of the players.

Synchronized squidding nice.

Now I'm usually annoyed when I'm competing with my squid mates to rush out the base. Collisions sometimes throws me off my path.

man, it really was something. wish I had a video or gif of it.

reminded me of a post azure j made about the non-verbal communication possibilities in this game

I have to say I really like this game. It's the first "arena shooter" that I feel like I don't suck at.

I just hate that my success seems to come from the roller. heh.

It's still very mixed for me. I was playing starting as a level 12 and then 13 most of the night last night. Early on I got lots of lobbies with levels 1-6 people and a couple 9-12s. Probably for a good two hours.

Then I got more Japanese players and was often one of the lower leveled players in a lobby of mostly 16-20s.

introducing.. inklala!

I think it's one flag for one won match in a winning streak. -0.5 flag for a lost match:

And Judd can award you with:

* Toasty – 1 to 3 Flags – 100 Gold
* Smokin’ – 4 to 6 Flags – 300 Gold
* SO HAWT!! – 7+ Flags – 1,000 Gold

These are summed together, so the max is 1,400 from Judd and you can get it once for each map rotation.

Oh man, I can't wait for 4 v 4 inkbrush matches tomorrow.

Seriously though, the inkbrush looks amazing. Gonna be a legit ninja squid with this thing. I still want to see it taken to its logical conclusion though. Imagine a super-fast, super-weak pen that made just enough ink to run on but whose range and swing strength made it a viable melee attack weapon. Combine it with the echolocator and mines and you'd have the perfect stealth kill weapon :3

Eek

I will, thanks again for the support :)

Not sure what you find poorly balanced about ranked. Yeah it's difficult because everyone is competing for a single or two small areas which needs to be attacked and defend at all times.
Thing is, you need to focus on your opponents
And not the area itself. Don't rush in the zone, use alternate routes to flank them, get some kills and then push in. It's a much more frantic mode but I love it, sadly if you get a bad team you're screwed.

Plus you win the big bucks in that mode! 50% win ratio is a net win in relation to turf wars

it's hard going from ranked to regular turf wars again, especially playing against GAF immediately. It really requires a different mindset and I couldn't really find it yesterday. It's also good to see that a lot of you guys are getting way better too. For example, Xeteh has turned into a formidable opponent! Which is a good thing of course, only makes me want to step up my own game and get better.

Port Mackerel ranked is pretty damn fun

Maybe, people seem as free today as they did a week ago though

I hope they introduce more multiplayer modes. I'm kinda getting sick of turf wars and king of the hill. Where is elimination or slayer game type? I'm already at level 11 and repetition of turf wars is coming to a grind especially with no friends to play with or no voice chat with only friends for coordination.

I think ranked mode is where the balance of this game truly shines. every gear ability, sub weapon, and special has much more of a purpose in ranked and you immediately recognize the trade-offs in equipping something vs. not.

There are two more ranked modes coming ^^

But that makes sense if indeed there's a hidden ELO rating separate from levels. You did good with the lower leveled players so your ELO increased and then you got matched with higher leveled players with a higher ELO rating.

Done for the night/early morning, but before I go, what my Inkling looks like right now:

I like the look so much, I'm thinking of spending 60K-90K just to re-roll abilities on the jacket and get a third slot on the shoes.

I have that jacket! It's part of my "okay, it's time to be serious" set.

I'm still wondering how they're going to implement the future ranked modes. Will they put it into ranked as a random rotation? Or will they allow you to select it as a separate mode? I can see both being likely but I'm leaning towards the former given how they seem to want to put everyone in a huge pool for matchmaking.

I bought this on Wednesday, played a game last night and thought it seemed alright

My wife, who plays MMOs like long single player games, and refuses to play anything online, has kinda fallen in love with this.

She jumped into the required multiplayer match at the start and was voluntarily queuing up afterwards. Was getting heated about the other team taking her territory.

She said the lack of voice chat helps her weird anxieties about playing online with people. When she's doing bad she's mad because she wants to do better vs being worried she's gonna get yelled at

I think Nintendo has something here with this game

Level 19 now.

Don't want to reach max level, I like the feeling of playing a game and seeing that XP-bar rise. Oh well, at least there's always gear to buy and level up, and of course to pay Spyke for his services. His monopoly on the black market is making it expensive for us consumers. ;)

The UI in the lobby seems to suggest that there will be one Regular Battle mode available at a time, and one Ranked Battle mode available.

Well it is fun for lots of people including me.

difficult? It is an online multiplayer game. Does difficult mean you suck? I am not sure I kno what you mean by deifficult.

How is it poorly balance? Ink strike? Location of the zones? what? Say something...

This is ranked. This is not a place to gain experience points. There is zero consolation prize as it should be in rank. If you lose then you lose everything, simple. Drives people to actually want to win.

people around here can moan to the high heavens that anyone against options is objectively wrong but I really enjoy that matches with randoms don't have voice chat. it's a much more inviting game because of that. obviously private friend matches should offer voice chat though.

I have to agree that I'm fine with voice chat & that if anything, makes it easier to jump in so I don't have to hear random strangers.

Plus, come on, what would you voice chat about?

"YO, SEE THAT INK THAT'S NOT OUR COLOR!?"

"YEAH!"

"COVER IT UP, YO!"

"GOT IT!"

Also since Splatfests are region-specific, it will be interesting to see people experiences with lag improve significantly.
I wonder if the fact I tend to get a few Japanese players per match is the reason why I tend to lag.

Oh hell yes! Just saw that the paintbrush is coming!
I'm actually really into this slow roll of content, as weird as it is for a console game.

Noticed the OT states this has 2P Local, what can I expect out of this? Campaign? Online? Vs mode? Split screen? Gamepad/TV? I may pick this up sooner if local is good.

It will happen.

Eventually.

Just bought this and it's currently downloading.

I'm blaming all of you.

You're welcome~

The local is it's own competitive mode, Battle Dojo. In that mode you fight to pop the most balloons and also scavenge for power ups to take out your opponent. It's fun but not that much of a selling point-quality feature.

yeah I think the friend option coming in august will alleviate some of the complaints, even if it doesn't have voice chat. the teamwork in this game is largely improvised so being on a team where you can trust your mates to make the right choices is more important than being able to verbally communicate, I would think. everything happens so quick that by the time you actually say something out loud the window to act on it is probably gone. I think most of the strategies will either be predetermined by load outs and a team's play style or improvised on the spot to what's happening.

Seriously just should've kept the Mii faces. The hair, outfit, & weapons were good enough.

Also now I want a Swordfighter outfit involving the Inkbrush.

Thanks for the quick response.

A little disappointing given how fun this game looks. I was really hoping for a great time in some form of ink splatting co-op mode.
