Also known as Genma Taisen. I can't call this a good movie because frankly it's not. Thin characters and a compressed plot left the story something less than desirable and the English dub is one of the worst I've ever heard. Certain elements evoked memories of Akira and I'd be hard pressed to believe this work (or the manga it was based on) didn't have any influence on Katsuhiro Otomo who apparently made his anime debut as character designer for this film.

Even with this disclosure, I think it's worth at least one watch as it's one of the most beautifully animated films I'd ever seen. It's pure animation porn when it hits its high points and it becomes just a treat to watch. There's so much little attention to detail and it strikes me that it was handled with great care. Another interesting tidbit, as was pointed out to me by madpierrot, is evidently one of the ending scenes involving a fire dragon was influential to the anime industry and has been replicated or given homage rather often. After a bit of googling, I found an interesting article on the subject that also contains a nice compilation video.

It's always surprised me that a manga/anime whose concept is 'what if the hand i fap with was a girl' was so successful.

Was it really popular? Wiki lists it as running for 2 years, but doesn't make notes regarding its reception. I thought the successful stuff gets milked for ten years. eg Fruits Basket, Oh My Goddess, Bleach, etc.

The animation in this film was, well, really good. Specifically parts that included a shootout and (as Narag has pointed out) a fire dragon that was wonderfully animated illustrated. The video in the article shows homages that I can only mark as well-deserved for the original.

As for the plot, I wasn't invested in it. The power-hungry nature of the main character upon first gaining his powers was a nice watch for a bit. Also, the English dub was really bad (and not in the enjoyable way). Though besides that, the villains and characters are nothing I'd recall as notable.

I am glad Chet Rippo left the coddling arms of the K-on thread and ventured into our vast animu wilderness. I hope others do the same.

I'd like to think i'm well aware of animu's manipulatory tactics.
I just happen to go along with it.

It also means you don't care about suspension of disbelief or originality
Id like to think that anime can be a legit storytelling medium rather than simply a supply to meet a demand.

Ginga e Kickoff 01-02:

Really enjoy this show, it's like the first season of Major (without the crazy dorama) only with much more interesting characters and a more interesting sport. There haven't been a ton of good football anime, really Giant Killing was the most enjoyable one I've watched, so this pretty mediocre series feels a lot stronger in comparison.

That said Ronaldo and Camp Nou? They should be talking about the legendary pitch that is Stamford Bridge and her favorite player and her soccer hero should be John Terry
:p
.

Some things that stick out in the show are the voice acting, Erika's (whos moe as a button) accent and Yu Kobayashi playing the role of adorable shouta, and the some pretty spiffy music too.

I'll be sticking with this one.

A good choice, it's a really fun show!

Not with characters so out-of-place that they singlehandedly break your immersion and suspension of disbelief!

Elena is to E7AO what Datfang is to Apollon.
Datfang is akin to having cake shoved down your throat by a large, hairy Italian man in nekomimi. Unpleasant and somewhat violating.

And I just meant that you can watch both manipulative anime and genuine anime. You don't have to pick a side.

Just how unpleasant that is depends on the type of cake.

And I certainly don't pick sides! I watch the entire gamut from pandering to classy, I just tend not to like the result when the two try to coexist in the same series!

I must find out who this mysterious datfang is.
I am behind on Apollon.

What a ride.

On a whim I decided to check out the first episode of this series and was instantly hooked, watching the first half in a single sitting. There's something to be said about the atmosphere that this show has been able to invoke. A brutal and seemingly unforgiving feeling where the rivalry between two of the main characters is seeded and nurtured, all centered around the show's central location. The dojo. It's not inherently depressing, there's nothing cliche' like some shots of a graveyard or a crow cawing in the background but its more the fundamental lack of anything "living" in this area that just creates this underlying feeling of emptiness. The characters beyond the main ones are as good as set pieces for the mood a scene is trying to convey. They're often stoic in observing some horror in front of them. All of this complimented by the series' choice to really use the lack of background music to its advantage.

I'm just really loving the way the show uses music, or in this case the lack there of, to emphasize the sort of emptiness I was talking about. It's something that's been chosen to be saved for the scenes of major significance and in doing so, when those moments hit, this feeling of waking from the starkness of the world around you and focusing in extra intently on the scene envelops you ... but it knows not to linger, and as suddenly as the livelihood of music colors the world it stops.

If they go ahead with a second season they'll hopefully include far more original content as it's a much more enjoyable than the stuff lifted from the books.

Third trailer of Hosoda's Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki, with more new footage.

Anime is saved.

12 hours to go, my faithful friends, before we set sail for The Sea at the World's Edge!

Hi-res screens without watermark here: http://moca-news.net/article/20120608/201206082233a/01/

For Branduil only:
The CG building zoom out in the Haruhi movie opening looks like CGI from an early-era PS1 FMV with better compression! :p

It was pretty bad.

There's still a handful of Saki: Achiga-hen episode of side-A fans here, right? Good news for you; you've got an extra three episodes scheduled.
Okay, with Zombie being short like 2 episodes and Saki adding 3 episodes, how the heck does this work? Doesn't being short create a demand for reruns and being long fuck up the schedule?

Anyway, I'm still hoping for an impossible announcement of a sequel to the original.
