Square Enix: FFXV shipments + digital sales top 5 million worldwide

Tabata and co are probably moving to work on their new IP/FFXV DLC/PC version, there is no way they'll help in other projects they've got their hands full already.

Also, I don't think they're working XVI at all at this point.

Square Enix is ALWAYS working on the next FF game. Remember when 13 was announcement and had a trailer before 12 was even out?

FFXV is on track sell around half what FFXIII did, Sun/Moon has so far a weaker start than X/Y by ~10% (and likely stronger digital sales which soften the drop), it's also a bit too early to assume what its LTD sales will be since, unlike Final Fantasy, Pokemon titles sell a big amount of copies after launch.

What are you even on about with Pokémon? Wasn't there just a thread that stated Sun/Moon is outperforming XY by 80%?!

FFXVI is most likely in pre-production with a really small team at this point.

your quoted post refers to japan, while yours is america

Huh... all these years and I never knew that a publisher might need to buy back copies that they overship...
Some do it. I know for a fact Sony does because I worked for a big box store that sold consoles etc, and they would let us swap out games that were not selling for newer stock/games.

Very curious how this sells. Not a lot of people are playing it on my friends list but that might just say more about my friends list these days...

But if these are just shipped numbers I wouldn't look to much at them since SE is kind of notorious now for overshipping

After trying to ignore FFXIII for years, whenever FFXV faces any success/accompolishment, people sure do love to start talking about FFXIII.

Good News.
Hope Word of Mouth makes it sell even more.

I think he's talking about Japanese sales.

It varies from countries to countries but some have retailer protection where the distributor is responsible for unsold stock and has to buy it back at a certain point.

Other don't have that, in Japan for example, retailers are entirely responsible for the stock they ordered. If it doesn't sell, it's on them.

If they dont buy back they usually offer some ridiculous rebate that kicks in.

How do you think games get to be 40% off or more within two months of release? Retailers don't take a total bath on that stock as publishers back stop any losses.

It allows pubs to fill the channel in hopes that a game does take off.

This is also one of the many reasons Nintendo underships many products, and overships stupid shit liek a bad mario party.

That is the most reasonable way of thinking... FFXIII is last offline installment of franchise... the new one should be compared with it you like or not.

Act like FFXIII never existed or ignore it is dumb IMO.

Hard to tell how good this is, with it being sold-in. Really pulling for SE though. This product could have been an absolute disaster and by all accounts it isn't.

Almost 40 of my friends have it.

It has to fail, you guys.

I must be vindicated on the internet.

Final Fantasy is doomed. Maybe not today, maybe not another 10 years, but you'll see! Doomed!

Just wait until the next FFVII Remake info dump. People will gladly find new things to complain about then

48 out of my 53 friends was playing it at the same time last time i looked.

They basically did the same for FFXIII when it was released worldwide

The problem was they flooded the market and barely shipped anymore after the first batch

But 13 is still the third best selling game in the series behind 10 & 7, that game did not overship in any way. Maybe they overshipped the 360 version.

Perhaps you're thinking of 13-2?

The PS4 version is currently #1 on the Amazon videogames shop. Not necessarily a sign of great sales, but at least that doesn't point to it flopping either. The Uncharted PS4 bundle is second (followed by Sun and Moon in third and fourth). Based on a console being up there, I assume that the chart is at least partially based on revenue.

I have to imagine they know that all things considered they know they aren't going to break even on all 10 years of the game's dev cycle.

We'll never know, even if they decide to comment on XV making profit it won't be including Versus. Doesn't really matter anyway, i doubt the money lost from a cancelled game will have much of an affect on what they decide to do for XVI

Final Fantasy XIII was at 5.55M worldwide as of March 31, 2010 (about a month after the US/EU launch). Sales were updated to around 6M at the end of the year, and again to 6.6M by the end of 2012. Games that were massively overshipped never get subsequent shipments, so Final Fantasy XIII couldn't have been too bad, as you said.

I definitely think SE is breathing a massive sigh of relief. It's not going to end up a flop, and critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive. Great to see its #1 on Amazon, too.

Just so people don't have to wonder: In their 09-10 EOFY report, covering April 1 2009 to March 31 2010, the figures for XIII (shipped, iirc) were 5.5 million WW. The game released in Japan on December 17 2009 and NA, EU, AUNZ, etc. on March 9 2010. Now you can compare to your heart's content. And don't ask me how I remember these things.
