Awesome alien.

I mean it.

nice visual balance between cartoonish / anthropoidal accuracy / cultural clues (immediately conveys the idea of the affable persian seller).

Just compare it with the alien slave owner from Episode 1 and see how much better it's conceptually/visually superior in EVERY WAY.

But you limit yourself when only using puppets. It was pretty cool seeing Watto fly around. I don't want to see just a bunch of slow moving puppets.

I wanna be a star wars puppet.

You might end up with my cock in you if you're as pleasing to the eye as this one.

The Hype is Strong with this fellow. They have a winner, IMO.

they will of course build CG replicas of their puppets.

Just look at how the sculpting is done with both above figures.

With puppets, there is immediate decrease of the fuck ton of unnecessary details. which is for the best.
because the puppet needs to convey its personna through a broader design. Which forces better overall design rather than racing towards an unending process of adding minutiae to make the character look cool.

Bellek can fly/dance/etc...and will never look cool. Same for Jar Jar.

This little fellow is doing nothing and is cool.

Watto flied in such a way that he would have been quite 'easy' to do in either full puppet or combination of puppet and CGI.

holy shit, is watto based on jewish stereotypes? stingy merchant, long nose, the hat, the beard and that eeeeehh (the new oy veh?). damn.

You definitely would not be the first to make that assumption. Since the very first screenshots people have been mentioning it.

yeah I'm reading about it right now. I never made the connection until masterballs posted 'eeeeh' lol.

Just noticed that there's another creature above the ostrich things. Probably where the puppeteer's head is.

Super excited for this, and I wasn't expecting it. The old Star Wars/Indiana Jones movies and Lucasarts games where a big part of my life, but the Prequel era certainly wasn't for me. I'm not even a fan of JJ Abrams - Super 8 and the Star Trek movies left me cold - but there's something about this that's just super cool. Not expecting a great cinematic masterpiece, but seeing that alien and market place did something to my brain that I liked. Oh man.

Oh, and it's probably a walking stick of some kind, but it sure looks like there's a guy walking in the background with a double bladed light saber (around 0:23, the guy in the white shirt).

And people are making a big deal about this...why? It's just a puppet. It's not like it's gonna be a factor in the story and all that.

it was a figure of speech. a heated one, tho.
GAF's buttocks have nothing to fear from me. LadyGAF can contact me through PM, tho.

It's ok I'll always luv u bbz

Yeah it looks cool, but lets not go overboard with the hype.

Don't do this to yourselves.....again.

This isn't going to turn out like the prequels. It may not be as good as the originals, but I'm confident that it will be a proper star wars movie, worthy of the originals. There is too much negativity surrounding the new movies when all the problems with the prequels have been eliminated (George Lucas).

If you're not making a deal out of this, you're in the wrong thread to be honest.

At the very least, it will certainly be quite different from the prequels. It may also feel more "different" than we would like with regard to the original trilogy, but I'm kind of expecting that.

It gives us hope this won't be the CG fest that Episodes I-III were. Yes there were some practical sets, but none of it, the practical and CG, had LIFE.

If they need to do something special, they will use CG still. There is little chance they are going for full practical effects only. It's just encouraging to see them trying to use practical more since huge portions of ep2 and 3 were shot completely on green screen. A good mix of both, and we are golden.

They make spiderman and stuntmen fly around with wires. It's all about the desire to implement such things, you need skillfull crafters.

Looks like they went back to 1985 Henson to populate the sequels. This is something I hoped for but thought they'd not bother with, promising indeed. Ties it to the right parts of the saga nicely.

Star wars: Episode VII: The Dark Crystal

I just love puppets and animatronics. CGI should be limited to backgrounds and less important stuff and not used on characters.

Jar Jar was just a bad character.

Yoda puppet in episode 1 was awful, the CGI Yoda was like he was an actual living creature, not limited by the qualities of the puppeteer. CGI is not a bad thing, and the worst thing about the CGI is in relation to the live action actors performances in the prequels.

I wonder how many here decrying CG characters are over at the GotG thread getting hyped over Rocket Racoon.

There's a place for both puppets and CG.

That was a terrible use of puppetry, to be fair. The Episode 1 Yoda was just so out of place and shot so flatly in the scene. Good puppetry requires a bit more care with cinematography to feel natural.

And puppets make me happy.

Let's not get crazy here and ban CGI altogether. It can work wonders if it is limited in its use. George Lucas just went crazy making everything from locales, characters, almost everything CGI. It's probably why Revenge of the Sith is the fakest looking film.

I love the use of animatronics, puppets and real life shooting locales. Hope JJ and Disney really pull it off.

Among all the puppet talk, let it be known that I just donated a couple of quid to Unicef and now I have a chance to be in Episode VII.

I'm still contemplating my donation. I might just do the postcard... i hope it's signed?

Sure would love to get the Episode VII lightsaber.

Going to be really interesting to see if they can sell out of the super elite tiers like that $50,000 advance EpVII screening in a "near you" location (only 5 available). There are some SW fans with very deep pockets.

That's the one thing SW does right that no other big SF movie franchise does: aliens that don't look like humans with a bit of make up.

I never cared for puppets. They're so slow and awkward and robotic.

Episode 1-3 didn't suck because they used CGI, they sucked because they sucked at using CGI.

You really don't understand, do you? It's not "just a puppet", it's a symbol of everything we've ever hoped for. When that beautiful creature walked on the screen, I actually cried. It's obvious that we finally have someone in charge who gets it, who understands what Star Wars really means. This franchise was never meant to be a CGI fest, it was about going on a practical puppet adventure with a bunch of my best friends. And this proves to me that we are there again. I can proudly state that Star Wars has it's soul back. "Just a puppet"? Good God, sir. This is one of my new best friends!
