Is the customer service line 24-7 or does it shut down but leave you in an infinite queue? I've been on hold for over 30 minutes.

The Galactic Republic

jbtBOSlDsiCfCu.png

Across the galaxy, the Republic's elite special forces drop into the harshest conflicts ready to do the maximum damage. Outfitted with advanced armor, huge weaponry and the best training possible, Troopers combine leadership with suppression fire, a variety of explosives and incendiary weapons.
Advanced Classes:
j2pulJIBljviu.png
Commando (Healing, DPS) (Assault Cannon, Heavy Armor)
jHhiE7zSd3CDP.png
Vanguard (DPS, Tank) (Blaster Rifle, Heavy Armor)

Leaders and warriors, heroes and champions, the Jedi Knights have stood at the forefront of every battle. They are masters of the lightsaber arts, kicking, jumping and flashing through the air and using the Force to clear the way in front of them.
Advanced Classes:
j2sn0LmZRIwYc.png
Jedi Guardian (Tank, DPS) (Lightsaber, Heavy Armor)
jWP7lI9wO1NLG.png
Jedi Sentinel (DPS) (Dual wields Lightsabers, Medium Armor)

A master of the secrets of the Force, the Jedi Consular is both fighter and healer, teacher and student. The Force can be used to cloud the minds of the weak, restore strength to the fallen and hurl both opponents and objects through the air.
Advanced Classes:
jA3ZzOXTZiR0z.png
Jedi Sage (Healing, DPS) (Lightsaber, Light Armor)
jbf8tiOxMDkTE4.png
Jedi Shadow (Stealth DPS, Tank) (Double Sided Lightsaber, Light Armor)

Living life by their own rules, Smugglers are the galaxy's most unpredictable characters. They dress for ease of movement-with healthy dose of style-carry one or dual blasters and are always ready to shoot first, stealth up and sneak away after.
Advanced Classes:
jEqR8TUEcP86Y.png
Gunslinger (DPS) (Dual wields Blaster Pistols, Medium Armor)
jbsikyzGTU789z.png
Scoundrel (Stealth DPS, Healing) (Blaster Pistol and Scattergun, Medium Armor)

Advanced Classes:
jbqAY2Hs9YhnK5.png
Mercenary (Healing, DPS) (Dual wields Blaster Pistols, Heavy Armor)
jIkisMNaoqq5R.png
Powertech (DPS, Tank) (Blaster Pistol, Heavy Armor)

Behind every Imperial attack, each sabotage, all the great betrayals, was an Imperial Agent. Armed for stealth and assassination, Agents do the jobs nobody else can and as such are trained to use everything from sleeping darts to sniper rifles, stealth belts and knives to advanced probe droids.
Advanced Classes:
jeAm25KfyrfW8.png
Sniper (DPS) (Sniper Rifle and Vibroknife, Medium Armor)
jmFry2G7AO0eJ.png
Operative (Stealth DPS, Healing) (Blaster Rifle and Vibroknife, Medium Armor)

No one inspires more feat than a Sith Warrior. Born for battle, few opponents can withstand the rage-fueled blows from a warrior's lightsaber or penetrate a warrior's armor. If dual wielded lightsabers can't finish the job, there is always Force Choke to bring an opponent to his knees.
Advanced Classes:
jblbDebdoBUvE.png
Sith Juggernaut (Tank, DPS) (Lightsaber, Heavy Armor)
jmO6khRDrPcfC.png
Sith Maruader (DPS) (Dual wields Lightsabers, Medium Armor)

Yay for extra early access! I blew a couple sick days already this week so looks like I'll only be able to play evenings. That first weekend I will probably test the boundaries of sleep.

Will we be able to get guilds up and running during the early access period?

Loving the work on the OT, it looks great and at the same time does not make the mistake that so many other OTs do in making it too big or complex.

Well done sir!

Can anyone sell me on this game? Why should I play it? I've read the OP, but I'm looking for some player comments.

Also, how close to WoW is it? I mean in terms of controls and quests. I kinda wish the movement and camera controls are exactly alike since they are very responsive and simple in WoW.

Thank you.

If that's your position, then it's pretty easy - don't play it.

To the rest of your question - the controls and interface are extremely similar to WoW (oh hey look they put the chat box on top and the targeting icons on the bottom to be different!). Movement feels almost the same.

Quest design is basically the same as WoW - kill 10 of these, fetch 4 of those, etc. There main difference is that everything is voiced - so when you pick up or finish a quest, you're treated to a Mass Effect-like cutscene. I personally think it makes a huge difference in the feel of the world and making me interested in the reasons behind most of the quests, but I think for most people they still won't care anyway.

This game is like WoW, circa early WotLK with a coat of Star Wars paint over it. You either like that, or you don't.

Movement/camera/controls are pretty much identical. Quest wise from what I've seen (23) there's zero escorts, collect 10 bear asses doesn't exist and in place there's a lot more of click this item in the world type ones. Bonus quests are nice, you can just kill a random mob and if it's part of a bonus quest it will be added to your tracker.

Crew Skills
Crew Skills is what would be known as Crafting in most modern MMO Games. In SWTOR, these are handled by your Companions:
Your Starship is home base for you and your crew. While you’re exploring the galaxy and progressing through your storyline, you can relay orders back to the ship. You’ll be able to assign tasks to your companions to gather resources, to craft items at the ship’s workstation, or to embark on special missions.

Crew Skills are categorized into 3 - Gathering Skills, Crafting Skills and Mission Skills.

Gathering Skills allow you to as the name suggests gather crafting ingredients or lockboxes.

Crafting skills allow you to use the gathered materials to construct armor, weapons, implants, etc. They can also be used to create armor and weapon modifications and medpacks/stimulants, etc.

Mission Skills allow you to recover information such as schematics for crafting, companion gifts for more affection or rare crafting ingredients used to construct higher quality items.

You can only have ONE Crafting skill at a time

Available Skills
  1. Gathering
    • Archaeology – the ability to seek out imbued items like Lightsaber crystals and ancient artifacts
    • Bioanalysis – the practice of collecting genetic material from creatures and plants
    • Scavenging – the art of recovering useful materials and parts from old or damaged technology
    • Slicing – a skill in accessing secured computer systems and lockboxes to acquire valuable data and rare schematics. Only gathering skill that does not provide any raw materials used in crafting
  2. Crafting
    • Armormech – Medium and Heavy Armor for Non-force users.
    • Armstech – Non-force user weapons such as blaster rifles, vibroblades and weapon mods
    • Artifice – Lightsabers (at high level only), Lightsaber mods and Relics
    • Biochem – Adrenals, Stims, Medpacks and Implants
    • Cybertech – Earpieces, armor and weapon mods. Also can craft speeder bikes.
    • Synthweaving – Light, Medium and Heavy armor for Force users.
  3. Mission
    • Diplomacy – Provides dark or light side points, rare Biochem materials and companion gifts
    • Investigation – Provides rare schematics for all crafting skills, rare Armstech materials and companion gifts
    • Treasure Hunting – Provides rare Artifice materials, lockboxes and companion gifts
    • Underworld Trading – Provides rare Armortech, Synthweaving and Cybertech materials and companion gifts.

The game will recommend you to take certain skills together for inter dependency reasons. Below is a diagram that shows the same (Credit to Sithwarrior forums):

Reverse Engineering

Reverse Engineering is a skill everybody has access to and works like WoW's disenchanting. It provides few materials back from crafted items, but is also the way to discover better quality versions of the item or mod.

First pass at Crew Skills section. We really need someone who can work on section header images, so we don't have to bold them and make them stand out more.

Anybody know if GAF supports text coloring? lol

Spot on analysis. Particularly in what era of WoW it resembles; it's definitely using modern sensibilities that no one is inferior to another class in their specialization.

Agreed on the voices as well; even though I usually love pointless dialogue in games most MMO's have enough going on visually that excessive text is easily skipped. Voice acting gives me an avenue to enjoy that aspect at a more relaxed pace.

So I updated it and when entered my password it says it's the wrong one... wtf Bioware?

I tried with every account and got the same thing. Support is fucked, login is fucked, account is fucked. If you are going to copy Blizzard, at least copy the customer service correctly

I sent the email at 8:30, I'll post how long it takes to respond to a simple account lockout.

Update 9:02 email received....telling me that they received my email

My log in worked fine. The message said there was some additional verification to be done and I set up some security questions and I am pre-loading now. Smooth as butter.

Nvm false alarm, I forgot I changed my password to include an uppercase letter. So I entered my correct password and now it is updating/pre-loading!

Thanks for the replies :) I might actually try this one just to pass time until GW2 even though right now the Star Wars setting is putting me off.

How's the UI customization? Can I move shit around and lock them in place? Is it possible to change the color? I don't like the blue.

A recent beta video of this looks nice, but I guess some people might disagree. C'mon now GW2 or D3, get released already. I'm having withdrawals from MMOs :-D

Thank you.

It feels a lot like WoW as far as controls and movement and all that jazz. I thought it felt responsive and was fun to play. WoW in the Star Wars universe is pretty much spot on. As for quests, the basic quests are the same as in, "Our village is under attack by whatever! Go kill me 10 of those! And look for my husband while youre out there!" But everything being voiced is nice and makes you tune in more, or it did me.

The flashpoints I thought were pretty cool. They have lots of cutscenes and kind of tell a story that ties in to the main quest, which I enjoyed. There is also more of "main story" feeling that the game had, like you might find in a large open world single player rpg. As in I have a bunch of sidequests that I'm doing to level and get loot and for fun, but there is a main quest line I want to get back to as well. I don't think WoW really had that.

Overall, I really enjoyed the beta and was pleasantly surprised. Can't wait for this thing.

So what makes this game different from a certain other MMO?
At it's core, both games are very similar, but SWTOR has a much larger focus on presentation. Every conversation is fully voiced and most offer a Mass Effect-esque dialogue wheel to choose responses from. The companion system ensures that you always have an effective partner for solo play. And, well, it's Star Wars! SWTOR doesn't really do much to change what being an MMO is, but it doesn't try to. It's putting another layer of polish on a genre.

How do conversations work?
Using either the 1, 2, and 3 keys or clicking on the responses players can choose different responses from a dialogue wheel, not unlike Mass Effect. In certain conversations you can make long term decisions that can impact your personal class story or alter the way a quest plays out. For example, in a Flash Point your responses can affect which bosses the party faces. The responses you pick can also earn you favor with your current party member or loose their respect. In multiplayer each player rolls a number 1-100 and whoever has the highest roll gets to speak and make a decision. But don't worry, any choices you make that affects your alignment will affect your alignment in the way you intend, even if the group chooses another option.

What does your alignment do?
A character who heavily favors the Dark Side can become corrupted in appearance (this can be toggled off in the options menu). Certain gear can also be restricted to certain alignments although it should have a partner of the other alignment. As of now, there is no Neutral specific gear, so choosing an alignment and sticking with it is encouraged. Your alignment all draws from one pool so any Dark Side points you get will counteract all the Light Side points you have.

How does your space ship work?
The space ship is where you and your companions live. You can manage your inventories, send companions on missions, travel across the galaxy, or relax with your friends. When traveling across the galaxy you can engage in the space combat minigame.

How does space combat work?
Space combat is the minigame players can play in between planets. These are quests and reward XP. The missions play similarly to rail shooters like Star Fox 64 or Sin & Punishment. Completing space combat missions earns commendations which can be used to upgrade your star ship. The ship does not change in appearance and cannot be named.
