Going to have to wait until after the game launches to see that video. If it took them this long to bring out this class trailer, then who knows how long it'll take them to bring out the progression video.

We get an update every week. If RD is say, in November? Yeah. Plenty of time.

It is funny how this game takes place thousands of years before the movies, but yet the game world looks exactly the same. Point in case the reactor and the defenses.
I'm no expert on Star Wars canon, but I'm pretty sure the reason the rebellion had their base on Hoth was because the planet is so empty and worthless that no one would ever check there. But for some reason there's a base there thousands of years ago...?

Well in thousands of years, debris could just be buried under tons of snow by then. Places are abandoned & rediscovered ya know?

Just enjoy the Star Wars tropes. I love it.

Yeah, that is kind of silly. I thought Hoth was supposed to be devoid of human life and the rebel base was likely the first base built there.

Oh well, it will still be fun to go there.

It's all the upside of "current" SW canon and none of the downside!

Bioware being stupid, lot of designs are being ripped right out of other sources instead of being unique. They did the same with KOTOR games when they redesigned the Tales of the Jedi look to make it more familiar to the movies. Same with us having to see Tatooine AGAIN, and Hoth in like every SW game when they are somewhat non important planets.

Hoth has been site of many events though and was a hot spot for the Sith/Jedi wars though in other fiction.

Oh, that's pretty cool then.

They could just not do Hoth. Only way it wouldn't be "weird" ya know? And anyway, it's not that weird. 3,000 years is a long time.

Yeah. It reminds me of KotOR when you go to Tatooine and everything there, from the Jawa's machinery to the settlement of Anchorhead, seems pretty much the same.

Edit: Beaten, badly ;P

And the Tales of the Jedi look was FUCKING AWESOME. Those ancient Lightsabers were great.

I don't think that KOTOR would have been half the success it was if Bioware had stuck with the original "He-Man and She-ra in space" look of the Tales of the Jedi styling. It could've been cool in its own right though.

It is absurd that we end up on these backwater "unimportant" planets so often, but goign to Tatooine is one of those things that makes it feel like Star Wars.

But it really wasn't as Fantasy looking as people think. The problem with the comics was they were all set on backwater planets with little technology but you still had lot of star wars still in places like Coruscant and such. The visual look just had a much more flashy archaic look to it. With KOTOR they basically just copied the exact look of the movies with some new designs to try and set it apart, but it really didn't look like something that was set 3k years before. I think they could have kept alot of the more flashy designs.... actually TOR has lot more flashyness going for it with it's armor designs for the Jedi and Sith that look like they would fit in the Tales of the Jedi series and not KOTOR.

Snow worlds are almost always my favorite in games.

I also love water worlds (think Atlantis more than a world that's in the ocean without any type of covering).

Since the new beta phase started already, does anyone know if they still send invites after a phase starts?

Apparently they are. As we move closer to the September stress tests, I imagine they'll want to ramp up to it somehow an would expect the testing pool to grow.

In fact, theres an NPC in Tatooine that says something along the lines of, "every thousand years, speeders get a little faster etc, but things stay the same". I always felt that about the SW universe, that the only thing that really changed were the characters the story focused on, in-regardless of how many millennia they were apart.

A bit OT, but does the KOTOR/TOR universe have any ties to the Star Wars movies? I know the Old Republic is set 3,500 years before the events of the movies.

With KOTOR they just did a proto-Star Wars design. They just took the look of the original movies and made their own idea of the prequels.

The KOTOR/TOJ comics were amazing and the look of KOTOR was one of my biggest disappointments about it. I was real excited when I heard about KOTOR because the comics were amazing, but the game was KOTOR in name only.

In what way do you mean? Like characters/story impact directly relating to the movies?

Yea they basically have it as a universe that has advanced so far that tech only marginally changes.... stuff gets better build, more powerful, faster, etc.... fighter craft don't have hyperdrives generally due to size, whatever little reasons they toss out. Dark Horse when they created the setting wanted things to seem a bit more archaic with lot more wild worlds in the galaxy, less technology.... there were no blasters, the lightsabers needed a power source with cable attached to them and such. Bioware basically caused them to retcon in that after the events of the comics over the 40 years a new technological renaissance took place and such brought on due to the big conflict with the Sith... blah

Basically anything other than the fact that it happened 3,500 years before the events of Ep. I-VI.

No. It's so far in the past, so EU writers can do whatever they want. There are some fun links, like names & places, but not really. 3000+ years means shit gets forgotten, buried, lost.

Well one of the original Fett's is mentioned in the games (he appears in the KOTOR comic series), and little things like that. But it's a big gap of time that hasn't really been covered by any other sources so they have a blank canvas to work on with all those years. After the KOTOR/TOR series, we don't see more story of whats going on till 1,000 years before the movies.

So I pretty much despise playing MMOs, but after playing about 5 hours of this, I'm a little scared that I might be tempted to buy it.

I was pretty sure it would disappoint too.

Hey guys, how are you enjoying your beta access? isn't it awesome having beta access? We are so cool.

Without saying much, I'm abit underwhelmed (I know such a tease). IMO, there are quite a few short comings with the premise of the storytelling, texture work (compared to WoW), and just overall "feel" of the world (themepark-ish).

Yeah, it's far from perfect, and part of that is to be expected when it's still got a ways until release. But for some reason or another, I'm feeling like it's greater than the sum of its parts. Though I suppose you can't really judge an MMO until you've played plenty of the end-game content.

It doesn't really have a ways until release.

Man, I'm going to punch EA in the dick. I got an email with "Star Wars: The Old Republic" in the title just a few minutes ago and it ended up just being an email telling me to preorder the game...which I already did...on origin.

Fucking cockteases.

That's not cool.

The subject line should absolutely be "THIS IS NOT A BETA INVITE SO RELAX... but read this anyway"

edit: sonofabitch, I just got the same goddamn email, and even though I knew it was coming, my heart still jumped. I'm in line for the punching of dicks.

Wow, that's bad.
I hate when they mislead you.
I am awaiting the email now, I know I'm to get it.

Please explain texture work. To me this makes no sense. One of ny biggest gripes with wow are crappy textures and low poly count.

God, don't say that. Nothing could destroy my interest in the game faster than theme park zones like WoW. I cannot fucking stand that shit, it destroys any atmosphere the game may have. I like MMO worlds to feel like actual places, not a series of quest spots. This idea Blizzard started using in WotLK where every inch of the zone is used for a quest and has some shit crammed into it really makes everything feel bland and calculated. A good zone needs space, it needs to breath and feel like a real place that you just happen to be in, not a linear conveyor belt designed to get you through the next five levels.
