Weird, I thought their whole shtick was "SWTOR is gonna be an Origin exclusive so we can get it onto people's PCs like Half Life 2".

They just want to be the only source of digital purchases apparently... basically fuck STEAM

I thought Battlefield 3 was filling that role? There's so much riding on SWTOR's success, I can understand why they wouldn't want to use it as Origin trojan horse.

I think this was already known, but confirmation never hurts: Origin won't be required to download, patch nor play SW:TOR.

Source: SW:TOR forums

I'd rather use the extra features of origin (ie. In-game web-browing) rather than just running the game by itself.

I don't think being a traditional MMO will hurt the game any, really, outside of not attracting folks through being the next big thing is all. People burnt on Cataclysm because it's a terrible expansion to a seven year old game. It's a glorified content patch to WOTLK, and a bad one at that.

Cataclysm came out in early December, it is now coming up on September and the only content added post launch has been two recycled dungeons, one of which in stats only (and if you're not raiding, your sole PvE outlet is to run these two dungeons 7 times a week for VP) and one half-raid featuring an end-boss you killed five years ago.

The game world is dead (moar liek City of Warcraft), the classes are homogenized, PvP has barely been touched since TBC, etc. You can go on for quite a while.

If SWTOR faceplants, it'll faceplant because of it's own design faults, it's Biowares own product to fuck up, they've got every possible leg up at the moment.

And no one wants to pick up WoW for the first time. I tried to get into it. I truly did. But the playerbase is bored and doesn't give a shit. Everything's been done a million times. It's a truly frustrating experience for someone new to the game (like me).

Wha, I got to try that shit with some other games now

In a minor number of cases you will have to look for the right game executable yourself btw, so if it isn't in the list, do a manual search.

That is one of the reasons I am looking forward to TOR. It is always nice to play a new and fresh MMO where the community hasn't grown jaded yet.

So I haven't been following this stuff at all. Is there any video for some mid level jedi/sith game play that isn't mp focused? Just want to get a look at the game.

Usually a leaked vid from the beta gets taken down by Bioware within 24 hours or so. Just keep an eye on sites like AlterSWTOR and Betacake.

Just pre-ordered the game. Count me as someone who is also tired of WoW and looking for something new. I just hope the ToR community doesn't turn into what the WoW community became after Cataclysm.

I'd really like to play solo as a DPS class, but be able to go tank when I find friends that want to do an instance.

How much does it cost to re-spec your talents? Can you re-spec anywhere or must you go to a class trainer? Is there a cap on how much re-specs will cost?

Respeccing gets more expensive every time you do it. It is basically how WoW handles things. Dual specs haven't been mentioned (yet) by Bioware as far as I know.

I really hope we get some form of it. I'd like to have a full on tank spec and pvp spec.

I just hope you can still AC respec if the Scoundrel is worthless in PvP and Huttball because YOU NEVER SEE THEM. THEIR STEALTH IS NOT THAT GOOD

The Jedi Shadow stands alone after an intense battle inside an Imperial encampment.

Star Wars: The Old Republic @ Gamescom - A Massive Disappointment

The dude sounds a bit whine-y but he does has some valid points. Especially this one:

I don’t want to create a Guild Wars 2 vs. Star Wars: The Old Republic debate, but look at how ArenaNet is handling these shows. We’re seeing more of that game than TOR, and TOR is actually coming out this year. We don’t even know for sure when Guild Wars 2 is coming out, and they haven’t even begun beta sign ups, yet gamers have already seen and tried out the game’s character creation, all of the announced races, have played low, mid, and high level content, participated in PvP matches, and even taken part in large scale PvE dynamic events. Doesn’t anyone see anything wrong with this picture? I know I do. Again, this isn’t about what game is better; it’s about how their respective developers are handling the release of information to the public.

Fucking Jedi, messing up a perfectly nice Imperial camping trip
Maybe the Imperials were kissing. That's the next thing to sacrificing babies! Can't have that!

EDIT: @ Dakota
Well, SWTOR is basically like WoW. GW2 has a lot more to prove. Not that I don't agree that they need to show more of the game.

Thanks Billychu.
Makes the wait that little bit harder.
I would love to know how they plan to keep subs and what the long term goal is for the game.
There is so much can be done with the star wars license and I like what bioware are doing with it.

Almost seems as if people are disappointed in the reality of the situation.
I never checked the review out because of heavy story spoilers. Im not posting much bc you guys know far more about mmos than I so I just lurk and wait for more info.

Watching all these videos is only a little underwhelming for me. I can't help but think they dropped the ball on the classes. With only 4 to choose from (mirrored on the other side) and 2 Advanced paths, it feels a bit lacking.

The storytelling elements, voice acting, and overall design of the game are actually engaging to watch and I'm excited for that... I'm just not excited to see 5 million Sith Warriors and Jedi Knights next to a handful of the rest (I'll be one of "the rest").

Still stoked for this game!

That's 8 classes - how many do you need? Each of a Class's Advanced Classes plays very differently from each other to the point that you've got some cases like Stealth Rogue vs. Healer between the two.

I didn't mind re-specing in WoW because the amount you had to pay capped out at a pretty nominal amount. I am curious if there is a cap in TOR though, and how high that cap might be.

Dual-specing would be ideal though, IMO. It's no fun leveling in a tank spec, nor is it any fun trying to find a tank when you're leveling as DPS.

Once you read up on all the advanced classes, you realize that it's really 8 classes altogether.

I would assume they are holding back races such as wookiees for xpacs.
Do you think we will ever see space combat or would that not work in a MMO universe?

They're not going to do Wookies because armor wouldn't work on them.

It works in a MMO universe and is extremely awesome, but BioWare seems to be more interested in leaving Space to just being a mini-game.

You won't play as a Wookie because they don't have proper dialog. And space combat is in this. It's not like SWG though where it was open, this is on rails like Starfox with it possibly being opened up more later on.

Give me a damn Jawa as a playable race! And yes, Space Combat can work if done right. It'd definitively be its own expansion.

There's the on-rails space mini-game, but I am guessing you mean gameplay like Freelancer or the X-series. I don't think so. During a Q&A earlier this month Bioware basically said that they are not going to implement it. Their excuse was that the movies never show actual space travel, but only going in and out of hyperspeed.

lol, I'd so play a Jawa.

I suppose so. I've just been spoiled by FFXI and WAR. 8 just seems like such a small amount when looking at how big the TOR universe is. As long as the Advanced classes play and look different enough, I'll be ok. I know it's still too soon to judge.

People were bitching that they weren't releasing enough info, now it's too much.

Did I read the same article as you? This guy was suggesting that BioWare is still too stringent on the information flow.

They won't do Wookies because they can't copy paste existing armor on them!

SWG got around this problem for various races by just hiding the armor pieces that didn't work right. Still, Bio won't do Wookiees I bet more for facial animation reasons.

From the announced races, you can see that every single one still has completely human face.
