World of Warcraft has nice environment design. Northrend as a specific example is one of the best looking and best designed landmasses in a video game, in my opinion. Quite lovely, blends together so well and really mixes fantasy and reality in a pleasing manner.

However, I do absolutely abhor most of their character, monster and equipment design. Even some of the best looking armor in WoW is still damned hideous, it's just tolerable by WoW standards.

The thing I hate the most about wow is how armor is just a texture and the only real polygons are the shoulders and helmet. At least TOR has some sort of dimensions to it

Yup, I ranted a bit about this in the WoW thread a while ago. It's hard to look forward to new armor when 70% of it is just taking old models from classic and stapling new textures to them. When the artists try to outdo their prior work it just winds up looking like a mess.

It's a shame, some of their race concepts, like Troll Males, Draenei Females, etc are very cool, but you can only look so cool walking around in some of that hideous armor. When pressed, I'd assume they'd whine about hardware power but considering what they did to insanely bloat their engine just for some fancy smoke and misc effects, I really wouldn't even want to hear it.

Haven't followed much of TOR or GW2, the two ORPG's I'm most interested in at the moment in terms of equipment design , but I can't imagine either will be nearly as stunted even at it 's worst

It's the environments that WoW nails. Yeah the armors are retextured assets, but the textures are at least not as blurry as the textures that I experienced in TOR. Again, I was in beta weekend...maybe that build had crappier textures or there was some kind of bug or glitch that showed low-res textures for me. But I can only judge based on what I've seen.

The game was really fun and I enjoyed the hell out of it, FYI. I'm having withdrawals and am upset that I need to wait until early access is unlocked. :(

I wish I knew what your texture issue is stemming from, MisterAnderson. I played it at my buddy's house over the weekend and the texture work was great. Granted, he is running a Phenom II x4 @ 3.4 with Xfired 5870s. He put everything to high and the only "ugly" thing about the game was the lack of AA.

The weekend version might have lower res textures to make the download faster. I don't know. It just seems weird how shitty those textures you're posting are compared to what I'm seeing.

That actually could be possible since we only had to download ~21GB out of the required ~30GB. But in the settings there are low/med/high options who are selectable.

Cutscenes are rendered in-game so nope.

Well there was definitely a hidden "cutscene graphics settings" versus "gameplay" because both the textures and models were rendered in higher detail for cutscenes for me.

Only difference I noticed was the Depth of Field. Texture quality was the same for me.

So I've been avoiding this game (because mmos aren't my thing) but my friend is trying to get me to play and I told him I would on one condition: I have to be able to own and customize my own ship.

Is this gonna be possible at any point? I want to play a smuggler and live out my childhood fantasies.

No real customization (from what I've heard, don't have a ship yet) but you can own one. Considering how much people want it, customization will probably come in an expansion at some point.

Yeah unfortunately from my understanding there is no real customization in regards to your ship, and you also have no choice in what ship you own aside from which class you pick (which is what determines what ship you get).

Definitely hopeful that they have some kind of expansion pack that adds more to the ships/space combat because as it is right now, it's definitely one of the games shortcomings. The ship you do get is pretty huge though, so that's a plus. Disappointing that (as far as I know) you can't have anyone else but yourself in your ship. I guess at this point it doesn't matter because there's nothing unique about ships players own, so hopefully that changes once they add more options there.

Part of what made Galaxies fun was owning a house and decorating it with items and furniture.

Devs confirmed you can.

I was at 40-120 FPS at any given time playing at 1080p.
I have:
Phenom II X4 970 3.5ghz (which I sometimes overclock)
Gigabyte GTX 460 1GB
7200rpm HDD
5GB of super slow RAM

Also my textures did not look that bad, and I was playing max settings. There's more optimization issues that will be hammered out come launch and drivers too, but yeah, just hang in there, and check on how/when your GPU and CPU underclocks themselves.

Make sure to be running in power performance mode (if on Win7/Vista) of Balanced or High Performance. I think with the older non-stepping versions of the Phenom series sometimes had that problem, so it'd be something to look into. If you need something cheap, Black Friday is always around the corner too, and there's always a ton of sales then.
We have the same GPU, Thoraxes. That certainly didn't make the difference...

The main thing this game does is make me wish for a full Imperial Agent game that would take stuff from Alpha Protocol and the Thief games. So much better than Space Dragon Ball Z Jedis

so if I wanted to, could I be an effective gun slinging Jedi in this game, ala KOTOR 1 and 2? OR would I have to be a Smuggler or Bounty Hunter to be able to wield pistols?

Nothing like shooting down fools with my dual pistols wearing a Jedi robe, flowing freely in KOTOR 2!

Weapons are restricted to classes. No gunslinging Jedi

is there something wrong with shooting things while hitting them with force push? Who says you really need a lightsaber?

Playing a Jedi Shadow till 20, I used to be ranged lot more than I expected. Might be due to gear distribution I had a lot more willpower and force attacks were good. Plus force attacks trigger meele bonuses. Nice mix of range force powers + saber play.

what a hokey religion

them and their ancient weapons
Well, blasters are ancient too. Honestly, weapons development in the Star Wars universe must have completely stalled for thousands of years until the Death Star.

Don't forget how everything is more advanced for some reason. And then we get to Episode IV and everything is all shitty and ugly.

Unless they give ships some utility or your friends are really into RP I wouldn't bet on getting many people to come check out your ship.

Not 100% TOR related, but it's Star Wars, and I have to express my excitement:

OMFG Kotobukiya Bishoujo figure of Jaina Solo on the way! *squeeeeeeeeee*

Far better than the crappy Darth Malgus figure they're putting into the Collector's Edition. Why couldn't they give us Satele Shan? Or even that badas Smuggler from the last trailer?
