Starfield PC Performance Thread

You do realize that the Series S by running with a lower resolution means that most buffers will be much smaller and occupy less memory.
The Series S also has effects using lower resolution or detail, to save in performance and memory footprint.

per hardware unboxed, they claimed that games wouldn't scale good back to 8 gb vram (elt alone 6 gb) and it was 12 gb or bust going forward. that was the case with last of us part1. you could reduce the game to 720p and lowest textures and game still required 8 gb+. and he called this normal. for him, starfield being compliant with 8 gb vram is a sign of "restraining".

ONLY Reason this game scales nicely into 6 8 gb vram is becauseo of Series S. but he somehow thinks it is because NVIDIA spammed 8 gb cards into the market. go figure

if series s did not exist, starfield would be an another lats of us part 1 and be uncompliant with 8 gb vram cards, clearly

this has nothing to do with Series S

You are reading too much from just one game.
The reality is that different games use different amounts of memory.
Starfield is heavy on the CPU and GPU, but light on the memory. If Bethesda was to use more pre-baked effects, it would use less GPU, but more ram.
It the game also had better texture work, it would look better and use more vram.

The Series S can be a pain to scale games into. But that is not an excuse not to have better graphics on high end hardware, like the Series x or modern PCs.

It took 1 dude 1 day to implement DLSS. So clearly, Bethesda/MS intentionally sabotaged their own game by not including DLSS, to the detriment of a large chunk of players, because AMD wrote them a check. Truly despicable behavior. The disparity between the shitty FSR they included, and the superior DLSS, as shown in that video, is vast. They should be embarrassed.

So before I dispose of my steam copy I need to make sure of a few things,

Does the gamepass version support the DLSS and reshade mod?
Is this game going to be available on xcloud (for steam deck purposes)?

Anybody else get occasionally huge drops in framerate when in conversations? Will go from 100+ fps to around 20 for a few seconds.

Doesn't happen very often, but damn does it hit when it does.

I ended up carving and going for a 4090. Between UE5 and this it seems a 3080 with DLSS won't cut it for 4k60 fairly soon.
I also suspect the massive ampere to ada transition was because Nvidia was stuck on 8nm Samsung. The next gen may not be as big a leap (or maybe that's why they pushed it to 2025, that and AI craze)

Yes DLSS and ReShade works on the Game Pass version.

I used both, now I removed ReShade and went for this simple mod that remove all the LUT filters applied so the game has better contrasts and no green or orange hue :

This mod also works with the GP version.

About xCloud, if it is available it will only be once released on Game Pass (on the 6th) as for now only the Early Access is available.

I can confirm that the Game Pass version supports the DLSS mod, including Frame Generation.
Thanks a lot guys, hows the process of modding the gp version? Will other mods work? Like the FOV and dualsense button prompts?

It works just like the Steam version, you have access to the files.

Most mods for now only edit files outside of the game folder (FOV is about creating and editing a .ini file in the "My Games\Starfield" folder), and it looks like that for most textures mods (like the LUT one and maybe the DualSense buttons one) you have to put texture files in the "My Games\Starfield" folder too.

So it means that even if you have the Steam and Windows Store version, both will use these mods as they use that "My Games\Starfield" folder.

DLSS and ReShade mods have to be put in the game's folder, and you can do it on the Windows Store version too.

When installing ReShade, it will ask where is the executable of the game, go in the GP version's folder and select the other executable as "Starfield.exe" is protected and can't be loaded by apps.
That's not an issue, ReShade only wants to know where the .exe is, not which one it is, so it will work if you select the other one (gamelaunchhelper.exe).

Thank you. I’ll give it a go now.

It will a bit jarring switching between a modded PC version and the xbox but oh well

Just activated PureDark's DLSS3 mod. I saved a spot in New Atlantis that was really performance heavy, then took screens of Native, DLSS2 only, and then DLSS3(DLSS2+FrameGen+Reflex).

I'm running Medium/High Mix, Motion Blur 'Off', Depth of Field 'Off', VRS 'Off', Res Scaling '59%'.

It looks like it's outputting a little more than double of the native resolution performance. The visual difference in a static view is miniscule, but when aiming and running the visual smoothness is a massive jump up, even compared to just upscaling enabled, the jump from 60 to 90 is really nice visually and the input latency doesn't seem any different than before.
No Upscaling:

This game loves RAM bandwidth ????

My rig is pretty modest, 5600x and 3060Ti, even the RAM still at 16GB, but running at 3200 MHZ, everything is set on ultra with just the resolution scale being the default 75% and VRS on, no stutters so far, FPS tends to be 40-50ish in big areas.

One thing i've noticed is that this game has a almost equal workload for all threads unlike latest releases that are 2-4 threads getting a major workload while the 4 other ones get a 30% workload at best and everything above that is 0-15%. This might explain why Series S was able to run fine with very few compromises as the game seems to lean more into CPU, you can also see that with the top 3 CPUs on the chart that uses the same RAM where the difference is the core count.

Yes, but don't forget to also create or add these lines in "My Games\Starfield\StarfieldCustom.ini" :

Code:
[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=

The mod page also has other lines to add if you want even darker skies at night.

I was having really good success with PureDark's DLSS3 mod, but after a few hours the game would freeze/lock and you'd have to crash it out and close. At first it was just after fast traveling, but eventually it started even when going through a door. It started to get pretty frequent as the game plot picks up speed. You can get around it by restarting the game and disabling the mod in the menu, or using the the '*' key on the numpad, but you can't predict where it will crash, or how often.

I realize it's only been available for a day, but at this point I can't really recommend it. Which is a shame. It worked great, but I had like 5 freezes and crashes total before I decided I'm done with it. Bummer.

Run the game at 20-30 fps it seems like on deck with windows 11 everything low, loads are fast. game looks good for sure. It's playable.

This game really lacks optimization.
Graphics don't look nowhere near good enough to justify these performance levels.
I would say that Bethesda has a long way to fix the performance on this game, but they are so lazy they will just leave it to modders to fix it.

I'm getting around 45-50 fps @ 2160p on a 6750xt/ 5600x on high settings more or less.

Game looks decent.

edit: I used the 'quality' settings this

Right, well then...

I've got the game running very nicely at 40fps plus, on high settings, on my ROG Zephyrus g15 with a Ryzen 9 5900 and a 3070 laptop GPU. On silent mode. On my LG CX. At 4k.

This renders getting the Series X version utterly fucking pointless for me.

Onto eBay the Series X goes.
