So to take the stress off of all the school work I've been needing to catch up on, I decided to revisit ZOE 2 since I had the HD collection around, and the games that were featured on Mechaweek were still on the brain.
I still admire that game's camera work when the player gets into melee combat with an enemy, but after playing so much Another Century's Episode 2 & 3, I noticed way more things that are lacking in that game. Game speed and boosting just is just not as fast, especially the latter not making the speed increase readily noticeable. The camera outside of lock on is a pain to deal with as well, especially with the only way to recenter it being to stop moving.
Though the bigger issues still are just the way sub weapons are handled and the lack of a good means of between transitioning between ranged and melee combat. The former is handled better in ACE or Virtual On as you have multiple attacks for different ranges that are all immediately accessible without having to pause the action or stop moving. For the latter, the problems with the dash factor into as it not only doesn't cover an acceptable amount of distance during long range, but none of the attacks you can do while dashing help to transition to one form or the other. Like, imagine if Dante never had Stinger at all in Devil May Cry, no means to quickly go from standing at a distance to up close with the enemy. It's like that, and the Vic Viper fight, while neat, compounds this problem super hard because he's almost always moving away from you. And before someone says Zero Shift, it being a sub weapon doesn't help it as you still need to cycle through a list to get to it, and it doesn't solve the problem in an elegant manner.
And that's just the game design issues, not counting the uneven scenario quality and pacing. But since I skipped all the cutscenes I only had to spend 3 hours with the game. The final third starting with the raid on the armada to the end of the game still kicks ass though, ain't no changing that. Was still fun in the end. But "least overrated game of all time" is QUITE a fucking stretch.
