The Division - Review Thread

Nice! Pleasantly surprised. The pre-release game footage I saw looked generic and kinda "meh" so I'm really happy to hear this is a very good or even possibly great game. I was going to pass, but I think I'll pick it up at some point when I can get it for $30 or less.

Between this, Rainbow Six Siege and Assassin's Creed Syndicate, it's really nice seeing Ubi games doing so well suddenly.

Don't forget Far Cry: Primal. Terrific game and it's funny to see that my top 3 games I'm currently playing are all developed or published by Ubisoft - R6, Primal and The Division. lol

Also big pro for me...loading. After the initial load into the game everything is seamless unless you're fast traveling but going from free roaming to missions to cut scene to free roam to a safety zone populated with other players and then back to your game solo without a hitch or loading screen is pretty fucking impressive to me.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I might like this game.

Ugh - I just saw a Uplay requirement. Is it intrusive? I hate having to log into multiple accounts to play a game.

Nah, I had the same concern but actually UPlay seems pretty minimal overall. It will auto-login when you launch the game after you have your Steam account linked, and you can import your Friends list into UPlay (for anyone on your list that has their Steam account also linked to a UPlay account) to see them in-game. It will mostly just sit minimized in the taskbar and take up ~100MB of memory.

The game is really good. I'm actually really excited to see where they use the SnowDrop engine going forward as Ubisoft said they were looking to use it in other games. Massive did a fantastic job with this game.

As someone who generally doesn't play shooters, I'm having a blast with this game and will certainly put a lot of time into this.

Glad people liked it. I enjoyed it but rated it a Wait for Sale, due to a couple issues i am pretty sure will be fixed.

There's an OT that is moving like quicksilver and is full of people praising the game. Everyone I know in real life is loving the game, yet alot of people are surprised that it is reviewing well.. Check out the OT people.

For me, the game is nothing short of amazing. And a full fireteam complete with group enhancing gadgets and perks is really great. If you are on the fence, the jump in. You are missing out.

In the first area, I walked into a hub area where people were standing in line in front of a laptop. Just went around them, activated the laptop and watched them angrily emote at me.

10/10

But really, I'm not to the endgame yet, but so far the gameplay and mission designs are pretty great!

So an opinion is worth more if it's a big site? If anything those are less trustworthy. That's rediculous.
I don't think anyone would say IGN or Eurogamer is worth more than any of the currently available reviews just as a matter of fact of being a "bigger" site.

If people are anything like me, they probably have little to no familiarity with the outlets that have published reviews. People know the reviewers they like and they're waiting for the "heavy hitter" writers to publish their reviews.

It's pretty cool. I still feel like the endgame content drought is going to be worse than Destiny's though.

Also, I've never been as much of a fan of humans vs. humans in video game. It's just kinda boring when bosses are just slightly more armored regular guys with 15x the health.

I'll wait and see, but I still think Destiny is the better overall game.

So a couple of issues makes a game wait for sale. Nothing is perfect.

Game is great right now, no need to wait.

I miss climbing towers.

Its funny to see the little hints of the old formula are still there, going to the safe houses is totally this game's "climbing towers". The game is also full of collectibles. Although, to the game's credit, they arent the typical Assassin's Creed style collectibles that have no purpose other than giving you something to pick up. In fact, I'd say its more Witcher-like in that they're all in service of humanizing the game world by giving us a peak into the lives of people before, during, and after the outbreak. Its not as well written nor anywhere as through as Witcher but theres still enough interesting stuff there that I enjoy picking up a new recording or watching the echos.

It really is a great game. There were good reasons to be skeptical leading up to release and the game is not perfect but I'd say Ubi and Massive delivered on the great potential this game has had since it was announced.

I remember being so excited for this game but being nervous about it not panning out but thankfully it did.

Endgame is my worry. Along with the repetition that cones with being in one real world setting with human enemies.

I agree, I just wish the writing was better for the collectibles. I find myself groaning far more than thinking "That was interesting, I'm glad I picked that up". At least they tried, though, that's more than most Ubisoft collectibles.

The phone calls are the worst, they're so incredibly inane.

Glad these scores quiet the naysayers. This game is fucking amazing. About to waste my Friday on it in a few minutes myself. Congrats, Ubi. You've created a gem.

What were those issues? Thanks!
Lots of little bugs plus some big ones. Getting stuck, falling through the ground, some sound issues. All stuff as I said that they will most assuredly come back and fix. As well as some issues with the shooting mechanics but Ubi has been awesome tweaking those since even the Alpha.

Uhm...ya not sure what your talking about here. No one said it should be perfect. Quit pretending.

Are you going to do a "Walk the Walk" video on this game? I really enjoyed your Syndicate one.

Thanks. Ya for sure working on it now. Trying to discuss with Ubi when there next true patch is. And will probably do most of the recording after that. Some amazing places to explore and some cool reflection of life hints that are all over the gameworld.

Dear "I didn't like the beta" people,

the full game is quite different to the beta. A lot more things to do, dz is packed full of enemies and the missions get pretty damn good.

Beta was pretty much the tutorial level.

Beta disappointed me, almost put me off buying the game, but the full game is surpassing my expectations quite well.

It's not even anything specific I can point to, I'm just having more fun.

I'm shocked at the high reviews. Game looks great but it's gameplay (the shooting) is pretty generic and can be pretty clunky. It's a fun, social shooter but for me it's a 7/10 at best. The missions and gameplay is repetitive almost immediately. Dark zone is cool and really the saving grace of the game as the PVE is pretty boring. To me, it's a poor mans Destiny. I'll play this and enjoy it but as soon as Destiny 2 or another shooter of this online style comes out I'm gone. Hopefully the DLC fleshes the game out more.

Ya the beta needed some work. But we got it between release and that. In many ways it felt like the beta was an older version. They did say it was for mostly stess testing.

Gotcha. Thanks!
No problem. It looks like they might have fixed the falling through the ground issues in one of the later maintenance which is good. I fell through 23 times in less than 11 hours. It was pretty crazy. But it seems like the complaints have died down about that.

As much as I hate to say it... I think I'll just wait on the Goty edition or whatever when it releases later this year/early next when all of the Year 1 content comes packaged in 😑. I HATE continuously throwing money at games in order for it to stay relevant and/or fun. Division looks like a perfect example of this because of the supposed grind fest you eventually hit... which is sadly a given these days with games in this genre???....

Well so far from the missions I've been playing they are almost setting this game up to be the division versus the creator of the virus plus an almost zombie like infected. Hopefully.
I'm in love with this game though, it fits everything I want from a loot centric light MMO. PvP that isn't intrusive, PvE that isn't mandatory for those who don't want to and just an all round great design. The music and atmosphere is just top notch, best in the business.

Also killing cleaners by exploding their gas tanks will never get old.

Funny you should say that because similar level and puzzle/platforming design that was present in something like Watch_Dogs is here in The Division. There are plenty of side missions or collectibles or even just areas with cosmetics and loot you have to find a way into with the environment and getting around obstacles. It's definitely more engaging than pressing forward and occasionally turning left or right going up a tower.

I've never gotten into an online game. Am I going to have a bad time if I don't play with friends? Matching up with strangers sounds pretty iffy to me. Going solo would be best...

Game is hella fun. Have to say it's because the gameplay too. If it wasn't fun to play, no way I would have put 20 hours into it in less than 4 days. And that's having a full time job and being husband/father helping out around the house. It's addicting in the best kind of ways.

Just one more thing and then I'll log off.

The shooting is better than Destiny's purely since mouse in an option.

9/10 for me.

Loved every minute of the beta and retail so far. The Dark Zone lends itself to some really fun scenarios. My brother was logging out for the night and one of the buddies in our group kept shooting him so he couldn't zone out. This resulted in them chasing each other around a truck right outside the zone in for a good 5 minutes.

None of us could stop laughing.

Also lol at the "It's a poor man's Destiny". I own both and have already put more time into The Division. The production values alone are miles ahead of Destiny (partly because Destiny refused to abandon the PS3/360).

The shooting is so mediocre. I like the skills and upgrades and customization but the core game is weak for me. Social aspect and dark zone is what keeps me logging on but I'm definitely not gripped by it. Idk.

The shooting is better than Destiny's purely since mouse in an option.

Get out. I could literally write a wall of how destiny's gunplay and gameplay is far superior to the division. Heck even loot design and weapon design I find superior in destiny due to the division being stuck in modern day.

Grinding for loot has been a given in this genre since, what? Diablo? Collecting SoJs in Diablo II?

I played with randoms from matchmaking last night and we had a blast.

Absolutely agreed. The ability to random is a bonus here to the highest degree. Then again that falls into the mystery that the Division pushes as an atmosphere :) Never know what you will get

Lol, my exact thought when anyone brings up Destiny's gunplay.

Get out. I could literally write a wall of how destiny's gunplay and gameplay is far superior to the division. Heck even loot design and weapon design I find superior in destiny due to the division being stuck in modern day.

Opinions man. According to mine yours is wrong. Get out.
