The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

I remember Ikeda saying in an interview that "bullet cancelling is getting old", so I think they want to try something new for their next shooter.

Thank god they're still making arcade games, that's what keeps the games tight.

Make a brand new vert in the vein of Ketsui/DOJ (ie. less focus on bullet cancelling and odd scoring systems) and I'll be ecstatic.
Yes please!

New Akai Katana Superplay DVD PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjJyOeNAnKY&feature=feedu

Looks like the scores are gonna be:
Shin* - 6,517,469,038 - GFA2-ISO
Arcade - 525,799,050 - phan
Zetsu - 2,010,247,912 - chrono

*sinmoon got a 7+ billion Shin score recently, making GFA's score outdated before it even gets released. That's gotta suck.

I'd love to watch that Zetsu replay. The 1.5 billion replay that's #1 on the leaderboards currently is really impressive, so I'm really curious to see what chrono does differently.

On a side note, I wish more people were playing Zetsu. Honestly, I feel like a 600-700m clear should be the average score for players who understand the systems, but don't know the advanced strategies, or aren't capable of doing them - kinda like 120m Ketsui runs or something. But there aren't too many people who have over 500m, so I've gotta assume that no one really bothered playing it. :(

And the North American "import from PAL" trend (Xenoblade) continues!

We live in interesting times!

Day 1.

I'm very happy I'll get to play it! .. but the fact that RSG isn't being forced to lock it to PAL consoles means that Cave has no plans to release it in North America.. I expected a Deathsmiles2x-style Games on Demand release, at least.

It's troubling that there seems to be no consistent Cave release plan for this region- aside from iOS.

God mode in Futari Black Label is insanely fun. I've been playing it over the last couple days, trying to get a decent score out of it (up to 1.993 billion w/ Reco so far), and god damn it is so good. There's nothing more satisfying than narrowly avoiding death by a single pixel, and then cashing in a 30,000x multiplier on a gigantic wall of bullets.

Futari really is the game of the forever.

Holy shit. I just beat God mode in Futari Black Label. Not only was I NOT expecting to beat it during this run, I had been playing with the mindset that I may NEVER beat it. So I'm pretty fucking happy. :D

Final score: 2,858,427,405 with Reco (ranked #29). I made a few mistakes that cost me a lot of points (namely killing the stage 4 mid-boss with chain meter when I had a 30000x multiplier to cash in), but I'm still pretty happy with that score. I wanted to hit 3 billion though.

I guess now I'll start playing with Palm more often, and maybe put some real time into BL Maniac.

Nice. Futari God Mode doesn't piss around.

I just did my first 1-ALL of DoDonPachi. >_<" Final Score: 26.4M

This is probably my hardest shmup clear up to this point. That shmup high is so good right now.

I thought I had a good chance to beat it going into today. Last night I was able to beat the final boss once while practicing, but I wanted to string everything together and do it in a real run. I tried to make use of all my bombs and I did a fairly good job of it I thought. All told, I died twice when I had one bomb left, so I could have made things a bit easier on myself, but I'm still fairly happy with my bomb distribution. After a grueling opening in stage 5 I got stuck without bombs for quite a bit. I ended up dodging damn near half of stage 5 without any bombs left (by far the hardest stage in the game!). Just pure adrenaline and a few lucky dodges. Felt fucking awesome. I made it to stage 6 with one extra life and just 1.5 million away from the second extend. I knew if I played well after that point that I would be able to conquer it. I did alright on the final boss, but had to wuss out and bomb the final pattern into oblivion. Which is unfortunate, but that last pattern is fucking scary. This was also my highest scoring run to date, which is always nice.

I think I finally see what all the fuss is about with this game, and I'm disappointed that I didn't get around to playing it sooner. Initially, I was turned off by the fact that the music repeats throughout second half of the game and there is only one boss theme. And the first two stages really aren't that great. But the game really starts to shine around stage 3, and at that point I was in store for some of the best shmup stages and bullet patterns I've ever seen. The way you have to dart around the stages, the enemy placement, everything just has this great feel to it. Polish, polish and more polish. And when in doubt, polish the game up some more. So yes, I will finally be that person, who recommends DoDonPachi when someone asks what shmups they should try out.

I've been playing a bit of Espgaluda over the last two weeks, not super seriously (I've only just made it to level 4), but I'm starting to get really into it. Always kind of ignored it before for some reason, but now it's threatening to break into my personal Cave top 3. I really like the slow down mechanic that makes tough spots seem fair and manageable & really helps with learning bullet patterns and getting better. Also the music is fun.

I got my first 1-ALL on DonPachi today. I thought it would be a good game to pick up after beating DDP. Most of what I'd learned from DDP carried over, so this one was pretty quick to beat. Sniper tanks in the last level are mighty lame though. Made it up to 2-2. Final Score: 8 Million.

Yeah, Espgaluda is a good one, been meaning to give that one some more time.

That's great DFK Europe is region free. NA 360 only owners weren't so lucky with Arcana Heart 3's Zen United release.

you're sure it's region free ? I don't think this will work on my jp system for example...but then again most of us did get the jp version already so it's ok.

still kinda sucks we won't be able to share ranking&replays with you guys :(

Dunno if this is the right place to ask, but I'm looking for an arcade stick for playing cave shooters mainly, but also SSF4 and maybe a couple other fighters.

Is there any sticks that work on 360/PS3/PC? Or would you have to buy seperate sticks for each machine?

Didn't they jsut say that it would work on European and American consoles? I.e. it won't work on NTSC-J consoles.

There is a big arcade stick thread. I'm sure you'll get more answers if you post there.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=207393

The MadCatz TE sticks work on 360/PC and PS3/PC but not all three. You can make a few modifications to the 360 version without soldering or cutting with the TE Kitty board to make it compatible with the PS3 too. The TE stick comes with a sanwa stick and buttons. I prefer seimitsu parts for shmups because the stick isn't as loose as sanwa sticks and the buttons need to be pressed harder (no accidental bombs). You can swap out the sanwa parts yourself.

Maybe they said european and american, because japanese already have this game? Can't say for sure.

Edith: I asked them on twitter. Will update my post, when I got an answer.

Edith 2: "Hi @krokounleashed it won't work on NTSC-J
risingstargames"

so it's not region free, it's PAL+NTSC-U locked.

about the arcade stick : get an hori HRAP EX SE or HRAP V EX SE. (SEmitsu is best for shmups and not bad for fighters)

It is also too bad that you have failed to research properly before posting such an asinine rebuttal. You are correct that Sony told Cave they were not interested, if we take a time machine back to 2006. There is absolutely nothing stopping them from bringing the games to the PS3 platform now. Now that I have cleared that up for the 18,000 time, carry on.

When you insult a Japanese company in 2006, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance. Sony should publicly apologize and cancel the PS3 or kiss Cave support for PS4 goodbye.

Or maybe, Cave likes putting out retail releases. Guwange bombed.
They can't release retail games in anything other than 16:9 on PS3. (Mamoru-kun for example had to have a 16:9 arrange mode before it could see release on PS3)

Therefore... no PS3 support.

At this point cave won't do a ps3 release, because they have brilliant tools made by M2 for easily porting arcade games to the 360, also memory issues. Playstation 4 is something different. Also if you're really a cave fan, you'd own a 360 by now. And the fans are the ones buying this anyway.

Jesus, nice. How does that compare to Ultra?

They're not even comparable, really - Ultra is a hell of a lot harder. I'd say God is more comparable to 1.5 Maniac difficulty, maybe even a little easier. Both characters in Black Label got a huge boost in power, so it's a lot easier to deal with the hard sections because everything goes down quickly. But it's still pretty hard of course, since you still have to deal with the same patterns from Ultra.

God mode is amazing though. I think 1.5 Maniac is still my favorite mode all around, but God is a really close second.

I just 1cc'd Mushi Futari 1.5 Original. Final Score: 143M

What an awesome game. I remember when I first played Futari at Arcade Infinity and a friend helped show me the basics of shmups. It was one of my first shmups, and along with Touhou, helped introduce me to the genre. I liked it enough that I picked up the 360 version when it came out, but I was pretty terrible at it. With enough practice, I was able to beat black label some time ago, but 1.5 had been giving me a lot of problems. I decided to pick it up again last week and dedicated 3-4 hours of practice a day trying to get better.

Stage 3 wrecked me as usual, and I made a few sloppy mistakes on stage 4. Normally, I would restart a run if I had died that many times before stage 5, so let this be a lesson in not restarting every time you have a bad run. I had no bombs or lives going into stage 5, but I was able to survive long enough to get the second score based extend and the extra life. I was out of bombs and lives again by the time I got to Larisa's "speed rings" at the very end. That section is so fast you pretty much have to guess where the opening will be. It's quite a scary attack. At any rate, I had been wanting to get this 1cc for quite a while, as Futari is one of my favorite games, and I thought it would be good to be able to finally beat it. >_<"

I think this one was harder than DDP was for me, especially since it gives you less resources. So it might be my hardest clear up to this point. Yeah, I know Futari 1.5 Original is considered one of the easier Cave shmups, but I feel this game is at the absolute upper limit of my skill level, so I'm quite proud of this one.

And with that, I'll probably take a break from shmups for a bit, when I start playing these games I tend to play far too much and overdo it a bit (and you're probably sick of reading these long winded posts). >_>

Congrats. It took me an embarrassingly long time to 1cc 1.5 Original, so I do think it's a little harder than it's made out to be. Either that or I just suck at it. Probably both.

To Far Away Times said:

Nah, I like reading about other people's progress, even if I don't have much to say about it.

I've been playing a lot of Futari (Black Label) as well. Got a 711m clear in BL Original and a 719m clear in BL Maniac. Normally I'd be happy with that, but I really want to improve that Maniac score since I know I can make it up to Larsa without a death. I almost had it in my highscore run, but somehow I managed to die three times in a row on stage 5, before I even made it to the boss. That was upsetting.

edit: Bumped my BL Maniac score up to 745m. Still making stupid mistakes. :\

Worth to mention, it seems Cave made peace with Sony. On this week Famitsu (Sept 13), there is a mention to a Cave Shooting Game for Vita and a Cave iPhone Minigame Port also for Vita.

That can't be a bad thing!

I've become lazy and have spent a lot of time w/ the iOS games. Still, an hour later, I wonder where the time went.

Good stuff ^^ (Cave x Vita)

about DDP DFK PAL+NTSC-U, it's clearly much better than nothing but for you guys in america, it's likely you'll need a new account and msps to get 1.51 and Black Label from one of the european marketplaces... (PAL msps can be found for quite cheap on code oriented webshops though)

This is intriguing!
Wonder what it might be. Also please allow the Vita to be held sideways if it's a vertical shooter.

It's not arcade games, or even a platform that accepts arcade-type control inputs, but cool I guess.

I'll be happy if their mobile team is abandoning phones and moving over to Vita; I'll be unhappy if their main team (Ikeda/Yagawa/Ichimura etc) starts working on handheld games instead of arcade/console.

Guess I'll have to wait and see.

well shmup+cave = arcade game anyway you put it, plus my guess is that it's not impossible to play on vita with an arcade stick of some sort so we'll see ^^ (iphone port aren't that mad either btw)

Yeppers. They aren't on the vendor list this year for the JAMMA show this weekend, which I presumed everybody assumed already, but is still a little surprising for me to deal with.

more details and screens here: http://www.andriasang.com/comy62/

First, and likely most familiar, is a new shooting game. The unnamed title promises to take advantage of the Vita's features. Details besides this were not announced.

Cave was more forthcoming with details on its other Vita title, Shirotsuku. This is based off a popular social game where players play as a "daimyo" in Japan's Sengoku era and build up a castle kingom.
