Hai guys, I've never seen a Gundam show before.
So who wants to catch me up?
Gundam is a meta-series that is comprised of multiple different, sometimes unrelated series.
At the center of it is the Universal Century stuff, which takes place in the same timeline. It begins with the original Gundam tv series then goes through a bunch of tv series (sometimes summarized into movie trilogies), OVAs, and a movie. If you want the absolute best introduction to Gundam that money can afford, watch the three movies summarizing the original Gundam tv series. That series is also apparently available
streaming on Crunchy Roll (first hit on Google).
Outside of the Universal Century stuff, there's a bunch of series that take place in sort of parallel universes. They are sort of remakes or reinterpretations of the Gundam mythos. You can watch any of them without any previous Gundam familiarity. Gundam Wing is probably the most popular one, followed by SEED, and then the first season of Gundam 00 (because the second season is shit). Personally, I prefer the UC timeline stuff. Just seems like they try harder when they do canon stuff.
The basic summary of the show (most of the time) is that it is a hard scifi show centering on the conflict between earth and a bunch of colonies orbiting earth. Despite the fact that one side (Zeon) dresses like Nazis, the show actually presents both sides evenly, and there's rarely bad guys who do bad things just because they like to feel bad. Most of the Gundam series basically just bounce back and forth between land and space battles until something really big and nasty shows up and is about to be dropped on Earth. If Tomino is directing, don't become too attached to any of the characters.
