Game name: Jeanne D'arc
US release date: 08/21/07
Suggested Retail Price: 29.99$
Platform: PSP
Genre: SRPG

Key Features

Developed by Level-5, creators of the renowned Dark Cloud series and the critically acclaimed RPG Rogue Galaxy™, Jeanne d’Arc delivers a new tactical role-playing adventure set across vast lands with detailed environments, unique characters, and a diverse combat and gameplay system. In Jeanne d’Arc, players will step into a colorful world that brings together history and fantasy, taking part in a magical tale inspired by the life and times of the legendary Joan of Arc. Combining an intricate tactical combat system, a heroic story with more than 40 hours of gameplay, and a stunning visual style that truly dazzles on the PSP system, Jeanne d’Arc is ready to deliver hours of strategic RPG action to players anytime, anywhere.

The Jeanne d’Arc story begins far in the past, when a great war was waged by mankind against demonic armies attempting to invade the human world. During that time, five brave heroes created armlets to restrain the demon gods. In a quest to turn back the rueful army, a young crusader named Jeanne is commanded by mysterious voices to use the power of the magical armlet to seal away the demon king and recover her homeland once and for all.

Set among sprawling fields, battle-torn villages, and intricate dungeons, Jeanne d’Arc unfolds through more than 40 expansive and highly detailed environments, where players will engage in the pursuit of France’s resurgence. Players will control up to 14 characters throughout the journey, including humans and beasts, as they battle a variety of enemies in the quest to turn back the English domination. Jeanne d’Arc delivers a strategic, turn-based battle system where players engage in unique team attacks and defensive schemes, using multiple characters’ skills in combination to create devastating strikes. Further adding to the depth of play, each character has access to one of eight weapon types that are also upgradeable as players’ progress through the game. Additionally, players can customize their characters with more than 150 different skills and abilities throughout the game.

Really gorgeous looking... almost makes me want to buy a PSP... almost. :lol

Really the one genre that DS has (surpringly) let me down in, turn based SRPGs... Front Mission's like the only one I'm dead set on, and it's a SNES port. :/

I just noticed something, and I'm probably LTTP on it, but is that the same frog thing from Rogue Galaxy in the first screen of the OP?

EDIT - beaten by a few seconds lol

Stupid question, what exactly is a SRPG and does it has random battles?

Strategic RPG.

No, the game has a point-and-click system, Like final fantasy tactics where you choose your destination. This is how you can get into a battle.:D

Ususally a turned based RPG that takes place on a isometric grid where you have control of your players actions (movement, attacks, item use, etc).

They vary when it comes to random battles. I don't know if this one does or not.

You can get into random battles in FFT as you are traveling on the map to your destination.

Kind of like fallout?

Fallout is more dynamic for its battles, and has alot more skilltypes and customization like what you'd expect from a Western RPG.

A strategy RPG is not in any way like an "open RPG" like the Final Fantasy series with open world exploration. There is no open map to explore, and as such they usually have a stronger plot that is split into chapters. Fights and strategizing are a key part of SRPGs.

Battles take place on maps that are grid-based, with each character taking up one grid space. You are constrained by action points - say if you have 5 points it often means you can only move 5 grids. Actions like "Attack" or "Item" might use up action points as well. There is often stuff like higher grids and lower grids (stairs, for example) that affect unit strength (higher=stronger) and range (arrowmen). Each side plays out its turn entirely before moving to the opposite side.. that is, if you control 6 units, you finish executing moves for all your units and then the opposition takes their turn.

There is an emphasis on different class types in this sort of game, as well as weapon customization and such. You often also recruit/train special units and skills.

Haven't played an SRPG in awhile, but with this, FF-Tactics, Disgaea Portable, D&D Tactics and possibly Wild Arms XF (if its released in the West) I might have to jump back in the genre.

If you're using PC games as a frame of reference, the battles in XCOM should be familiar. You go to points on the map to engage in these type of battles (usually accompanied with story elements). I haven't played Jeanne D'Arc, but that's how it works on most SRPGs.

Isn't it a bit early for this thread? I'll be buying this one, even though I heard it wasn't really anything special. :(

Demo was great, will buy on day one.

Here are some excerpts from the PSM and EGM reviews if anyone cares.

PSM-9.0
Huge 2-page article(slow month?)

"All in all, Level-5 has made a deep, varied, and challenging battle system with a handful of nuances you can utilize to you(typo) advantage. That in conjunction with a fantastically told story, makes Jeanne d'Arc a game that you just shouldn't pass up."

EGM- Shane 8.0, Jeremy 7.0, Fitch 8.0

The Good: Solid gameplay, spiffy visuals, $30 price tag, bizarre setting
The Bad: Slightly easy, no job system
Better Than: The Messenger

This game is definitely one of my most anticipated PSP releases for this year.

I honestly had no interest in this until I played the demo and WOWOWOW I was sold. Might not be a day 1 purchase for me but it'll definitely be a birthday present in September.

When I heard the game would be 29.99$ in that other thread, I went and preordered it. I wanted to wait a little before buying it because there were too many games I wanted coming out this summer, but this price really was too tempting to resist.
Now I only have to wait till it is out.

Just so you know there's gonna be no online reviews up for about another 10 days or so.

But I'll break embargo and give you an early sneak peak of Modojo's Jeanne D'arc final opinion:

It rocks.

...that is all.

Edit: She's young enough in the game that in the prologue her dad is ordering her to run some errands. Seems ~16-17ish.

Pre-ordered yesterday and got the demo. Level5 is my new favorite company, I swear. They really need to produce more stuff. The game is simply gorgeous. Regardless of it's difficulty I'm sure that I'll play through the game multiple times.

how can you play the demo?

I want to buy this game, but it is comming durring the start of the gaming rush, so I might hold out on it unless I really enjoy the demo.

EBstop got a few of them in. Go in and ask for one, they may still have them, though I'm not sure if they are pre-order only or not.

I wish Sony would release demos for PSP games via their official site or even over the PSN Store. It would be nice to download the demo of this on my PS3, just transfer it to my PSP and give it a go. It's going to be a day one purchase given its price and positive word of mouth, but come on, give everyone a demo.

I was already planning to buy this, but i am really happy it's only $30. I was expecting at least $40. I won't complain.

No kidding. Considering I just spent 40$ last week for a PSP port of a GBA game, I'm delighted to get this great-looking brand new PSP game for only 30. Ridiculous deal.
