The Sequel Trilogy Remains Canon - Daisy Ridley returning as Rey in a new Star Wars movie

People are aloud to like things. It doesn't mean they are shills. That's like me saying everyone who hates the new SW shows/movies are trolls. Ridiculous.
Who are you exactly? Butt out creeper. This poster attacked me in my first interaction with them. When that happens I keep my eye on posts. I am calling them a shill for their continued observable behavior on this site and not branding everyone who likes something ever a shill like your fucking weak white knight strawman post was implying.

Kev Kev Kev Kev is probably one of the most polite posters I've come across. I'm unsure what set you off but the personal insults are immature and uncalled for. I haven't like Star Wars since the Empire Strikes back. But, I'm not going to feel offended if someone shares interests in prequels, sequels or spin offs. There are much bigger things in life to lose sleep over and a movie franchise isn't one of 'em.

Where are you getting these “reports” from?
There are no reports. He read a post on the internet by OP (Manabyte) and then went off on KevKev because...they have opposing opinions on new Star Wars. The whole point in posting in discussion on a topic is to read both viewpoints.

I'm not really on either side of this fence as I've honestly never seen the sequels and lost interest decades ago with episode 1. However, I appreciate that this thread had both sides of opinion on the franchise. Some people just need a break from the internet.

People are allowed to like things. People are also allowed to call out shills when they are blatantly shills. Mana is the latter. His history in regards to Star Wars, Star Trek, and Rings of Power more than show such. It is just calling a spade a spade and nothing more.

You think he's being paid to promote that stuff?

You can be a shill without being a paid shill - but given his long history on the internet, I can definitely see him being the latter. Regardless, he is a shill. He will defend the worst shows while constantly crying about the "youtube outrage mongers", which is an umbrella term for him to put any criticism under. Dude is the Xbox/PlayStation warrior of film and comics.

Can you? To me, having that direct relationship with the product is a defining part of being a shill and is what would differentiate them from someone like a console warrior. How would you define a shill?

Finn in the new movie with Rey if he comes back lol I swear they did that dude so dirty. That's literally all he did in all 3 movies.
That character really did get screwed over. I thought he would be in training before part 8 started, and I don't even remember what happened to him after part 8.

And Ackbar's death done so dirty, when he should have been the sacrifice, not some made up real world totem.

He was right,
Its A Trap Movie GIF by Star Wars
Must be hard writing for Disney with twitter being upside down, so I do wonder what "theme du jour" will be in the next film?

My guess is Chewey gets taken out by a falling (phallus shaped) tree during a hurricane caused by climate change. But in a shocking turn of events, the climate change will have been caused by a Jedi temple running the heat too long.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
When you release the limited 4k Steelbook line of all the movies and every single one except the Sequel trilogy sells out within minutes.
That kinda gives you the hint where the sequel trilogy stands with fans
Being available 3 years later at discount prices and still not selling is a clear indication not to make anymore.
I really can't wait for this diarrhea filled trainwreck to happen.

Holy shit here we go......i don't feel good about this at all. No wonder Kathleen Kennedy is having this movie go forward. Let's worry about checkboxes instead of a cohesive story...

I hope i'm wrong

Wow, what a unique, powerful, exciting piece of Marketing. This is the equivalent of a new employee joining my company and getting 30 seconds to introduce themselves on Zoom. She seems about as passionate about this project as a quarterly revenue update when revenue is neither up or down.

No wonder Adam Driver has is acting like he never did these movies. Also doesn't help he did this scene, anyone who's worked with Disney in a non-Pixar film since the 2000s seem to want to distance themselves from whatever project they worked on: and if you've paid attention. Daisy Ridleys career is basically ruined because of these movies, she needs this and I don't blame her for returning.

Agreed I don't see how anyone can be hyped after that, not that anyone was hyped before but still.

My daily reminder of how I feel so incredible fortunate and privileged to have spent my childhood, teens and young adult years in the 90s and 2000s.

..... that woman is from the same generation as you lol, if not older.

Also, this is a good thing. Disney is playing the long game. Rey as a character appeared before more eyeballs than most did, and by the time this movie comes our any kids who watched those movies will have grown up with her. It will be 10 years since the Force Awakens.

This movies got a ton of potential and I'm looking forward to it.

Also, if you actually thought they were gonna decanonnize the sequels I have to laugh at you. Not to be rude but you've kinds earned being laughed at if you believed that.

Doesn't matter how many "eyeballs" watched it. No one cares about Rey. Sure it'll do good, it is afterall star wars but who knows if it'll even do sequel trilogy numbers. I doubt it

What defines a flop? It will probably make like a billion dollars still
If Disney go all in for more Star Wars movies and the first one off the cab only makes a billion dollars, that would be an unironically large disaster for Disney. These movies need to gross a billion just to breakeven.

I didn't like bringing Palpatine back or Rey calling herself a Skywalker, but other than that the sequel trilogy was pretty damn good. Daisy Ridley did a great job and I like Rey as a character. I'd also love to see more Finn, Rose, Poe, maybe even some more about that little alien lady that gave Rey that lightsaber in TFA, and other characters. They've been on a good run with Mandolorian, Andor, Obi-Won and Boba Fett, so I'm confident this will be another great SW addition. Looking forward to it.
Rey calling herself a Skywalker was utter nonsensical bollocks ....Snoke being a front for Palpatine was also one of those "Ill just leave that there for the audience to work out" huh? moments . The movies were entertaining but I really wish they didn't turn Luke into a grumpy old has been with piss poor searching skills.

And let's not even start with the casino and its space camels. Its what film schools use nowadays to teach students what a " skippable subplot" is....and Rose in part 3 seems to have 5 seconds of screen time.

Plenty care about Rey.
Many of them just look more like this:

Than like this:

That girl in that picture will be a young adult. That girl in the video will be an older teen. They're all gonna go see this even if all the adults may not want to(and let's be honest. Most hardcore star wars fans will see it still.)

..no, they don't.

Disney didn't even expect TFA to make what it did. They were expecting 700 million and were going to take a loss and build up the 4 billion dollar investment.

As it turned out, the *first movie* grossed over 50% of that investment. Profit wise the movie was sitting over 700 million.. Last jedi did 400 million profits.

They really didn't expect TFA to do that well. They likely thought the prewuel stench would be meager returns and no star wars movie up til that point had done those kinds numbers.

Star Wars 7: Budget =$447 million; Profits = $588 million
Star Wars 8: Budget= $300 million; Profits= $366 million
Star Wars 9 Budget = $416 million; Profits = $121 million
Rogue One: Budget = $220 million; Profits = $296 million
Solo: Budget = $275 million; Loss = -$74 million

The decline in sequel trilogy box office profits is bad, and their merchandise sales have been abysmal. There have been no successful spinoff products from the sequel trilogy or its characters that I'm aware. In stark contrast, The Mandalorian S1&2 was a smash hit completely divorced from the sequel trilogy. Star Wars merchandise sales soared because of that series, and we're getting multiple spinoff products.

It seems to me they're doubling down on their losing horse; maybe it will work though, who knows. Kathleen Kennedy greenlit Andor after all.

Forbes reports TFA, TLJ and TROS profits different then you do. I dont know if you're doing your own calculations or not but its important to note.

They were never going to do what TFA did twice. But 400 million profit and even 200 million profit are very, very good. 3rd films don't usually do as amazing as the first or even second and it's important to note TROS had an astronomical budget co m pared to its predecessor. Solo having the budget it did was also insane which sucks because its a pretty fun movie.

They have an entire theme park built around the sequel trilogy that they invested 2 billion dollars into. Maybe that doesn't count as a "spin off" (there are spin offs and tie ins to various books comics and video games either already established or coming) but they've never neglected the ST like some are saying. They are basically playing to nostalgia with characters people already know whilst playing the long game and letting the main ST base grow and setting up continuations. I dont think they're going to do another trilogy but they are definitely expanding beyond what we currently have.

I got the numbers from Forbes:

Theme parks? I can't attest to Galaxy's Edge itself but by all reports demand for the Galactic Starcruiser has fallen off hard which is sequel trilogy-centric. Disney Parks just posted Q1 2023 results $8.7 billion in revenue, 35% increase profit over last year. Park attendance overall is outpacing last year too. Yet the Galactic Starcruiser reported months of low occupancy causing cancelled bookings, and now they are having to reduce the number of voyages being offered per week.

Again, the $$$ doesn't seem to follow sequel trilogy content or The High Republic content for that matter. If it did, there would be articles all over the place bragging about their success. Disney is about to drop billions launching a new trilogy; I would think that decision probably shouldn't be based on content that "needs growth" or "playing the long game".

There is no point in discussing with Toons. Dude is an idealogue through and through. He will defend any drek as long as it promotes his ideology.

Sequel trilogy =

TFA- great film, with appealing characters. Story had tons of promise and I couldn't have been more excited for the sequels.

TLJ- Was basically completely uninterested in following up any story beat that TFA set up for it. Rey sure is intriguing, who IS she? Absolutely nobody u fuckin moron! / Snoke is cool as this mysterious cool new dark lord guy- I wonder what his motivations are? Who fuckin cares! This story is about Kylo We'll chop him in half before we tell you anything, and not worry about that guy anymore! / Wow, I can't wait to see Luke in action as a master Jedi! No you fucking won't! He's old, bitter, won't pick up a lightsaber, and won't even leave the fukin island he's been hiding on the whole movie. Oh, we'll have him make a force ghost and keel over and die!

In all seriousness, though, viewed with some distance and perspective- It a beautifully shot film, well acted, performed. On its own, actually pretty good. But its an abysmal sequel to TFA, because it had no interest in doing so.

RoS- I actually don't hate this like a lot do. It's stupid big entertainment. Yes, so much is non-sensical, but it's fun all the same to me. I dunno. The thing is, between Carrie Fisher dying (when the third film was supposed to be all about Leia) and the fact they were basically given nothing constructive to continue with on TLJ- RoS was just going to be a mess. Especially once TLJ killed all story momentum. Rian Johnson should have been required to make his own sequel (and the whole trilogy story should have been storyboarded from the start), instead of writing everything into the ground. But we got this film. Bring JJ Abrams back on short notice, have him crank this thing out. Pretty much ignore all things TLJ (just like that film ignored all things TFA).

So anyway, that shit is done. I still like Rey, and Finn, and anymore else who wants to come back. Hopefully they can give some of these characters a better legacy with this new film.

lol of course she's a Jedi Master.
You know, I see this critique a lot, but honestly- Luke trained with Yoda for like a minute which was the only formal instruction he got and then left and only returned right in time for his death. And he became a master. At least Rey had about the same time with Luke, and some actual real time (months, if not years) training under Leia between TLJ and RoS, and full access to the original jedi instruction manuals so it's actually a less of a stretch with her.

Luke wasn't a master throughout the entirety of the original trilogy. He became a master over time as he slowly began to teach and educate a new generation of Jedi. We see this throughout the expanded universe and in games like Jed Knight II and Jedi Academy.

We could see something similar with Rey, but the big issue is that Luke actually had a fucking personality. He had hopes, dreams - Rey is a mary sue. She is absolutely empty and devoid of any interesting character or development.

I really like TFA but the rest of the sequel trilogy was terrible and ruined all that was built in TFA.
I don't think this new trilogy will do even close to as well as the last trilogy simply because SW is oversaturated at this point. There is just too much of it.
TFA was after nearly 15 years of no SW, now there is new SW product to consume every other week. I can take my kids as an anecdotal point of data here, but they could not care less about SW. Not that they hate it, it's just not special at all anymore.
Marvel is oversaturated as well, but it's all moving in the same direction and in service of what came before it. SW is just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.

Actually, I'm in agreement with Teletraan. Kev did in fact make a strawman post and did so by interjecting vs being part of the original conversation (though, admittedly this is on a public forum). Point is, not exactly an amazing way to greet a new person, in particular given the subject of the conversation.
