The Year Without An Xbox: How will Xbox not putting forth an effort to sell Xbox Series consoles this year affect the gaming industry going forward?

Can you expand on this? What objective data are you using?
"According to data from IDC, the Quest 2's lifetime sales exceeded 14.8 million units by mid-2022. In contrast, the Xbox Series X/S had sold 11.4 million units by the end of 2021."

Now things are worse for xbox than before. The portal also sold around 2 million. We have no concrete data for xbox, portal and quest except a couple of countries that release sales data.

Spain for example has sales like this
Meta Quest 3: 1000
Xbox series: 700

Xbox actually has a large following but I think that following turned more people away than added to it.
That following is going to break records initially like Xbox series when they run out to buy it but the overall number is too low to sustain them based on that following alone. They still need to convince people that aren't the diehards clinging on. They might just do it.

And I believe that was before the holiday sales which is going to amplify Portal & Quest sales a lot while Xbox isn't putting much of an effort to push Series Consoles.

They just expanded into India, which is the largest gaming market, over 500 million gamers.
Both PS5 and PS4 outsold Xbox in India, 10:1. The PS5 Digital Edition costs as much as Series S in Amazon India and they have stopped selling Series X in India.
Even the respective Xbox and PS5 subreddits

Playstation really is a global brand.

For what it's worth, that was Bethesda and it was long before Xbox owned them
That's what a lot of people think but it's not true.
Microtransactions were planned as a systemwide feature for the xbox in 2005:

And this

"Microsoft itself offered a winter-themed outfit for Kameo: Elements of Power for $2.50, alongside new maps for Perfect Dark Zero and new cars for Project Gotham Racing 3. None of these early microtransactions took off in a major way, but it was all about Microsoft showing a proof of concept to other publishers"

Bethesda were just the first to listen to MS and release one for their third party game (2006) with MS' recommended pricing for these things. It was popular and people took the piss out of that DLC but the concept and system behind it was made by MS.

India is the new 1% of China 😭

Even the Middle East. Playstation probably has presence in any country with a decent gaming audience. Its cheaper than building a gaming PC in most countries.
Yes that's the reality but I was talking about the meme from when a Xbox fan said that Xbox was going to win thanks to being available in China and only needed 1% of China 😭

You don't say.
Concrete as in weekly/monthly or yearly totals provided by MS, sony or Meta but the IDC estimates and limited retail sales figures show what OnQ is saying is true. That:

"Even Portal & Meta Quest is gaining ground from under Series consoles feet."

Trust me they know this but just wanted to be a distraction.

IDC quotes from 2022 using Series X numbers as a comparison doesn't tell us anything.

Portal is an accessory, not a platform. It's not gaining ground on anything with 2 million sold, nor is it in direct competition with consoles. The Quest headset is obviously in completion with other headsets like PSVR2, which it annihilated. Your console warrior gaslighting doesn't on me, Three. Sorry.

Nintendo and Sony will sell even more than they would've if Xbox was booming I guess.

Hopefully MS moving out will give ValvE opportunity to take their place and actually compete within the console/handheld space in the long-term. That'd be a lot more interesting.

Series X and S, not just X. Why doesn't it tell you anything?

Counting Portal as an accessory would make it even worse for xbox because it can only sell to those with a main system but Portal can be a platform now too because you don't need a PS5 to use it. Cloud streaming released recently. Anyway the PS portal released late 2023 (Nov) by late 2024 it had sold 2 million in 1 year. What is your estimate of global sales for xbox in 2024 in that year? Some estimates put it at around 2 million too. This year portal did well and xbox collapsed further so I'd be interested to hear how it wouldn't be "gaining ground" on it.

What has this rant of yours got to do with what we're discussing? You asked for that specific data, I provided it. I didnt say they're competing with eachother or say that Quest isn't the majority selling VR headset. You don't need to deflect with nonsense. OnQ was right again, you're looking for a distraction to the topic.

I don't think we have ever been in this situation that we're heading into,

I believe it will be the Wild Wild West with companies releasing devices to get a piece of the pie but not much structure.
You're roughly 3 years too early on this.

Right now we'll just have another year of Xbox selling almost nothing and Playstation 5 slightly decreasing and Switch 2 ramping up.
That's 2026.

The outlier here is Steam Machine. It'll test out if there is a market for a PC focused console. If there is then performance will be the biggest roadblock. The next Xbox would do better since the hardware is better and old Xbox fans will jump in. But that's 2027.

By 2028 we'll see PC prebuilds popping up. That's the "Wild Wild West" era.
And then we'll also see PS6.

So…
2026: PS5+Switch 2+Steam Machine
2027: PS5+Switch 2+Steam Machine+Xbox PC
2028: Switch 2+Steam Machine+Xbox PC+PS6+PC console prebuilds

If Xbox stops, nothing will change in the short term, but in the long term it could be bad for PlayStation customers because there would no longer be any competition in the segment of powerful consoles. That could mean that Sony wouldn't have to put much effort into pricing, service, or content. Second and third party deals and collaborations could decrease, and the number of extremely high-budget blockbusters might also go down. However, I don't think it would have any impact on PC players or Switch owners.

It will affect the industry in four ways:

1) Publishers and developers will be less incentivized to prioritize, highlight, or even just talk about an Xbox version of a game. This will lead to a lot more mindshare (as silly as that word sounds) for PlayStation and potentially PC. This will also, more than likely, lead to more crappy Series S versions of games.

2) Unless there's a real business opportunity on Xbox, moving forward, publishers and developers will be less incentivized to do an Xbox version of their game. This will lead to more games and sales successes on PlayStation, PC, and potentially Switch 2. Assuming the Xbox Magnus is truly just a PC with Xbox BC, we could witness the launch of the Magnus with (technically) zero Xbox games. This will cause confusion and will affect current Xbox Series users because games could be announced for the PS5 and "Xbox" but won't be able to run on S/X.

3) Growth in emerging markets (e.g., China) will be near zero for Xbox hardware and services. This is why the "This Is An Xbox" campaign is a double-edged sword. It enables them to get closer to their new vision (i.e., bye-bye Xbox hardware) but it inherently signals to any potential Xbox customer to stay away from Xbox-anything. Game Pass will be screwed, which means Game Pass users will be screwed again (i.e., more price increases) and if you're a developer or publisher in an emerging market, Xbox makes the least sense for your game.

4) It's going to be really really hard for Xbox to retain it's current workforce whilst the platform continues to experience massive declines in both hardware sales and Game Pass growth. For example, if another major retailer decides to unplug from Xbox, the people at Xbox who manage retail relationships are on the chopping block. It's a sad outcome and I expect the usual Xbox cheerleading outlets (e.g., IGN, Eurogamer, Windows Central) to continue to ignore the root cause (Phil Spencer) of Xbox's complete collapse and try to blame the layoffs on unrealistic targets or tariffs or something.

I don't think companies will wait for the last minute to react to situations. Companies that wouldn't have dared jumped into the battlefield a few years ago see a opportunity to find a place right now .

Random YT short: They are saying that Xbox made Xbox series S useless once they increased the price of GP. Just like that skit floating on the net; you spent how many hundred of dollars on GP as the "accesible and affordable" way to play games and then with series S you wouldn't be able to buy used games.

The Xbox numbers this holydays are going to even more brutal

I don't see how. Valve hasn't officially released SteamOS for everyone yet and Windows/XboxApp fullscreen mode is still in beta.

Xbox has been pretty much irrelevant for the industry since way more than a decade ago, this year won't be a special one. Sony kept slowly eating the market share they had, that's all.

Portal & Switch 2 was the nail in the coffin for Series S & PS5 Pro was the straw that broke Series X's back .

The market is crowded & MS left Series to die for now

can fuck off to wherever, as usual they tried to buy up, where they cant compete and it failed spectacularly for the fanboys that were cheerleading it. cry me a river.

any industry is instantly better without ms in it.

Gaming existed before Microsoft and it will be better after Microsoft
Microsoft will be a part of gaming for the foreseeable future being the biggest publisher out there. As for consoles, Xbox has done great things for the industry and the gamers over the years. They're obviously not interested in it anymore, though.

You mean the PS2 era? The era everyone loved to bits?

Sony was a tad arrogant though because of their dominance in the PS2 gen. The PS3 launched with a crazy high price and they were telling people to get a second job.

Fortunately Sony actually did have some unexpected competition that gen with the 360 and it forced them to change direction for the second half of the PS3 generation and start of PS4 generation.

Sounds like your type of place if you know all about it

I wouldn't fit in well there but you and a few others would.

Anyway, commenting on the thread. I think you care more than MS does. They've given up and moved on.

Not time to even think about that stuff for those business types. It's on to the next thing.

Cloud Gaming grew 45%. They aren't worried about selling few more consoles. They just expanded into India, which is the largest gaming market, over 500 million gamers.

For hardware, they are going after the premium hardcore userbase of Pro consoles, with Magnus. Users with the highest spend capacity and usually highest attach rate.
Cloud will become the series x with magnus being the higher tier going forward is my guess.

Like I said if you're researching it you must like it , I don't have a clue about it & don't care

Sure. Lmao

Anyway. The industry seems in the same state it was in when MS was attempting to compete. So I think everything is going as well as it can.

You are saying that vr and others are picking up sales now MS has given up on this gen. Sounds like the industry is doing fine going by the data you've shared of your opinion.

Yeah because PS1 and PS2 didn't happen. And then Xbox influenced Sony with paying to play online, PC ports of exclusives and live service push.

$600 was not arrogance though. The OG fat PS3 cost them $840 to manufacture. Remember Xbox 360 had paying to play online but Sony offered online play for free.

The industry is doing better than ever overall the question is how will one of the big players no longer competing at the mass consumer level affect the outlook.

Gaming products are selling pretty well so it's not a case of no one is buying gaming devices.

I believe the PS Portal is now around 4,000,000 sold World Wide.

They aren't competing anymore they are a third party publisher. I don't know how it will affect us tbh. Probably ok if the user moves to pc and enjoys all the benefits of that Vs the shitty closed garden of console gaming.

Ms seems to be doing well without consoles which is annoying imo because I thinkt hey had good hardware on the series x. Shown by how well it's performing Vs the ps5 pro in recent comparisons. So ultimately the consumer loses out for less competition but the industry seems fine.

More people seem to be waking up and going pc than ever so that's a good thing.

Realising that steam doesn't charge for online gaming, cloud saves, incredible family sharing etc. the best is already out there and it looks like consumers are migrating at a steady clip to pc gaming, so I think we will all be fine.

This isn't a Gaming is doomed thread it's a question about how it will look going forward.
