TLOU Remastered: 30 fps option gives better shadow quality [Up: Comparison GIF in OP]

Can't believe we're even still making this compromise FOR A GAME FROM LAST GEN. Let me repeat - this is NOT a current gen game that can't get 60fps AND have top end graphics. Now we can't even get a 60fps version of a LAST GEN game WITH all the trimmings? WTF. Sorry but we deserve better. Game just scream cash in and I expect better from ND. I also expect that they don't dance around this like the have been. Apparently 30 fps was JUST in there for the ones who were crazy and wanted 30fps. All of a sudden, right before release this hits. Great.

I do tend to wonder why developers "walk on eggshells" about certain aspects of their game, and then I realise it's because of crazy people like this.

Cry some more. 30fps games will always look better than 60fps games. TLoU 60fps will look "top end", but the 30fps version will still look better due to obvious reasons you might fail to see. I could even port a PS2 game to PS4, 60fps and all that. Yet I could make the 30fps version look better if I go over the top with graphical enhancements.

You should probably just wait for the DF graph, dark10x is the only person I trust with an eyeball analysis.
I always go with the patented NullPointer framerate detection formula: If its smooth and I can't notice the dips, its a locked 60fps.

60% of the time it works every time.

Maybe it's because I have a ton of experience with PC games so I'm used to the idea of lowering or raising settings to get games to look and perform how I like them but I'm genuinely surprised that some people are getting annoyed because Naughty Dog are giving us more options.

Just...just go.

This is so fucking stupid.

Of course running it at 30 fps is going to free up more resources to improve visuals elsewhere as opposed to running it at 60 fps. But that doesn't mean running it at 60 fps means you'll get the same PS3 visuals. Not at all.

In fact, I'd be pissed if there weren't any visual upgrades if you set it at 30 fps.

So ultimately, thank you Naughty Dog. And please ignore the idiots in this thread.

If I feel that the shadows are a definite improvement I think I will stick to the 30fps.

Not really thinking this game needs the 60 (it being more a slow and methodical game).

Looking forward to trying both options, glad ND has given us these options.

Hell to be honest, I'm probably more excited about the sound options and increased fidelity of those as I think that's equally exciting.

When I see a GIANT BLOCK OF TEXT full of interspersed TYPING IN CAPITALS and just a general abuse of MELODRAMA AND CAPS LOCK, I don't even have to FUCKING READ IT to know that it's just another SHIT POST.

Jesus fuck. Anyone that knows what frames per second is, should also know that halving the framerate would free up a lot of resources. It makes perfect sense to boost effects like shadows.

It's not like the 60fps version of the game has PS3 quality shadows, they've already been increased. 30fps is just getting a further boost.

I've always said that a game running at 30fps will always use less resources than trying to reach 60fps and because of this, you can add more effects and better image quality when you drop the frame rate down.

Think of it this way. When you have a light car, it is able to accelerate fast, but the more stuff you add to it, (especially the heavy stuff) the more it's going to bog down.

Now, what if you had to choose between bringing some cool stuff with you and accelerating slower, or leaving all your things at home and enjoying the extra torque?

If you wanna pack more stuff in your car and take off just as fast as you want, you have to get a faster car or carefully choose what you're willing to live without for the extra speed. You can't have everything.

The PS4 does not have infinite power to do everything. They have to stop somewhere and make compromises to get the speed they want.

Can't believe you guys freaked out over this. This is great for the weirdos who would prefer to lock it at 30fps.

I just saw the Gamersyde footage and it looks absolutely jaw dropping at 60fps. That fluidity absolutely murders better shadows (which is the first thing I turn down in PC games to improve the framerate)

Your opening sentence doesn't gel well with the rest of what you just said. It's not using less resources, it's that those resources are distributed somewhere else.

And I'm not sure why we needed the straw man at the end.

Instead of a completely confusing random metaphor, 60fps game have 16ms to draw a frame, and 30fps game has 33ms to draw a frame, so locking at 30 means freeing up exactly half the rendering performance of the console, which can then be used for prettier shadows and whatnot.

this is a post I'd make if I was high

I just wish that other devs opt to do the same, i been waiting for this to happen since forever, i prefer visual goodness over fps. It's nice to have the option available, i don't get all the whining and hope that ND don't pay attention to the complainers.

It's happened before more or less, BioShock might have been the first v-sync option on console, but I could be wrong.

Theres a gamersyde video of lou?!? Where I cant find it?

Has anyone mentioned that PS3/360 releases of PS2 classics almost never increased both the framerate and resolution? How many ps2 games that were 30fps on PS2 were 720p 60fps on ps3? How many Original Xbox games were rereleased at 720p 60fps on Xbox 360? This is already more common this generation than the previous, yet people still act like the sky is falling when a developer can't scale the graphics of an older game infinitely while still maintaining 1080p/60fps.

Here's a fun fact. If you took the original Quake, with it's original geometry, and added enough effects, you could bring any computer you can buy today to its knees. Similarly, whatever the best shadows ND could pull off ontop of the original game engine while holding 60fps in TLOU remastered, they could obviously push the needle further if they cut the framerate in half. How is this not obvious?

Ignoring GAF might actually go a long way towards efficiently safeguarding the mental health of game developers.

I kid. Mostly.

Yes, it's JUST a PS3 game. Just a PS3 game running at

Twice the framerate
Twice the pixel count
Four times the texture detail
Two times the shadow resolution
Cutscene models instead of game models for main characters
Higher resolution particle effects
No texture streaming
Higher draw distance
Higher LOD at longer distance
Probably some I'm forgetting

You realize "it was on PS3" does not make it possible to run on finitely higher quality on hardware a few years newer, right? Can't believe people still use "PS3 game" as an excuse for everything should be 4k 120FPS with 16xMSAA. PS3 isn't an Atari 2600.

I missed the cutscene model part.

Does this mean we get those high quality cutscene models in-game? If so that is fantastic. I'm not expecting the pre-rendered ones btw, that's a bit unrealistic.

Besides everything said, you all missing the fact that 60fps drastically reduces the motion blurring when moving the camera around. That's a big deal for me.

I might just do 30 fps since I don't see 60 fps adding much to LOUs slower, methodical gameplay. Definitely try both and decide but blindly choosing, I'd stick with 30.

What's going on with any news about ND ?. With every news about them you will find some people complaining about anything.

I'll never understand the "slow game=don't need 60fps" argument. Just panning the camera around at 60fps looks a zillion times better. Every single game benefits. Everything looks better at 60fps. Its certainly more immersive to me. Looks more lifelike.

gaf, do you honestly know what is happening? I mean, are you in the bed with the person who is making this game nappen? I dont think so. So if you're not dont think you know anything till the game is out. Cauase that would be lewed and not approptiate.

This is surprising, but fine by me. I'm waiting for a price drop, but I would use the 30fps option then if it means better visuals. Unless I'm playing a fighting game or Mario Kart, I'm much more worried about a game looking pretty than running at as many frames as possible (sorry 60fps'ers
not really sorry
)
I can still play and enjoy Zelda Ocarina of Time to this day just fine, and that I believe runs at 15 fps on the N64. As long as the frame rate doesn't fluctuate, ain't no thing.

For me its like seeing throw a window with 60fps and if its lower than that it takes away the immersion.

I really don't know what I'm going to do. On one hand, I'm a 60 FPS enthusiast and generally favor that over fancy graphics. On the other hand, from what I've seen of TLOU (I never played it on PS3), it appears to be somewhat of a story-oriented cinematic game so perhaps I should aim for what looks best. Playing the Destiny beta has also reacquainted me with 30 FPS, so it won't be as jarring. I'll try both. Alright, after reading a little more into this, I'll almost certainly be sticking at 60 FPS, but I'll give 30 FPS a shot as well.

It's about preference. While you enjoy the life-like look, someone else may prefer the film quality that 30 fps with motion blur creates.

All console games should have this choice. Even as a member of the PC Master Race, I sometimes choose higher settings in my games and aim for 30fps. Other times I dial it back to get a smooth 60. Depends on the game. I like to make the choice, not the developer.

Usually, I lower shadows a lot to boost frames. So if I ever get this game, I imagine I'll go 60fps. But maybe not...

Choice is good.
