TLOU Remastered: 30 fps option gives better shadow quality [Up: Comparison GIF in OP]

Since sooo many people are complaining about the quality of the GIF, here you go:
14570267510_67a3bbaa2c_o.gif

Original PS3
Original PS4 (I don't know which shadow mode it was)

This isn't 30FPS vs 60FPS. This is just missing shadows in the Remaster. The shadow map bias or object properties were changed and as such they do not appear to be there. This can be fixed.

It does not bother me a whole bunch, but it is odd to have less shadowing than the original version had. Most likely a bug.
where are you getting these from?
Wishmaster posted both in the OT. I went from there by creating a gif with red circles, which caused people to go apeshit.

Weird to see some shadows completely missing as they harped on about lighting.

Anyway the difference is very noticeable in that OP gif but as someone else has been posting it's not ALWAYS that bad so to me it's not nearly worth dropping to 30 just for occasionally better shadows

The PS4 version looks worse than the PS3 version - I don't see a single improvement in this gif. Where are the superior character models and lighting?

This pic isn't a good showcase of much other than the fact that the resolution and AA are much improved. The character models are higher poly, but that isn't super noticeable to most people. Joel and Ellie also have higher resolution textures. We do have other examples though where the quality is upped and improved. Naughty Dog couldn't upgrade everything about the game. Some stuff is going to look very similar, as it is a PS3 game after all.
To save more explaining(it's not missing shadows):

A messed up bias still presents itself as 'missing shadows' to most people. I am aware that either the bias was messed up or the object parameters had changed. This most likely a fixable bug, as I had said. Will update my post regardless.

The improvement in aliasing is massive.

But yea, other than that, the differences aren't very big. I can make out an improvement in Joel's clothing pretty clearly.

And of course the PS4 version will look a lot more clear in actuality with its higher resolution.

Isn't that from a cutscene, so aside from a clearer picture due to resolution, the models are the same? Also, there seems to be more self-shadowing on Joel in the PS4 version.

I'm....... Not impressed. The game already looked great to me. These "additions" aren't significant enough to buy for PS4. (This is just my opinion. I do not speak for others) The 60/30 fps option really doesn't do it for me. I have a serious problem with telling the two apart.

What I'm most disappointed with is the character models. I remembering reading somewhere that the character models were gonna be the same ones as in the pre-rendered cutscenes, but they are apparently the normal ones :(

They are the cutscene models. Transparencies and textures are MUCH better. The difference here is that the cutscenes had carefully placed lighting, in addition to effects like subsufrace scattering being applied to the skin. Wishmaster had a more detailed post I will go find.

EDIT: Here you go.

It's a remastered PS3 game guys. It won't be up to PS4 standard.

Exactly. A remaster, not a remake. People were/are expecting way too much, and then whine that it doesn't look as good as they thought it would because they didn't understand the difference between remake and remaster and/or ignored the list of improvements from ND themselves. All I expected was the PS3 version in 1080p with a few graphical bumps at 60fps, which is exactly what they told us to expect. Truth be told, I'm buying this for the 60fps alone. Everything else is just a bonus.

still staying 60 i feel the shadows are too sharp on 30 i stick my hand up right now in the sunlight my shadow is not sharp its slightly blurred :P

Circled or not, there are obvious cutbacks being made in this version. Lighting improvements have been touted again and again by this company. Now we're seeing many lighting effects from the last gen version are completely missing (such as wrinkles on clothing when moving and many shadows in the environment). Yes, we're pissed about this rush job and don't want to support this half done port. I wonder what else they left out.
Can you show me all the missing shadows from other shots that have been captured?

Pushing for 60 FPS is stupid anyway. Devs should be giving us the best graphics at a solid 30 FPS.

Animations are a part of graphic, and they indeed look much better at 60fps. And considering ND seems to be able to make 60fps games with much better visuals than the majority of 30fps games, it's not stupid at all.

I literally don't see a difference, and that's not often the case for me.

That said, I don't expect to see much of a difference either. Diminishing returns and all that, and The Last of Us is probably the best looking 'photorealistic' PS3 game ever released.

EDIT: Wow, I'm just starting to see the differences. Yeah, they're insignificant. If I had a PS4 the 60 fps option would without a doubt be what I would play.

Yeah, there's a decent difference. Some of the screens there isn't much, but the first comparison we saw was obvious. I don't see why anyone would choose 30fps over 60fps because of it, though.

edit for sake of clarity: I'm referring to the shadows specifically.

There's a significant difference in clarity. Textures and models all have more fine detail now due to being 1080p and you can see everything a lot cleaner. Plus 60fps vs 30fps isn't being shown in a lot of these comparisons. That and it has actual AF and AA now

"1080p/60 fps or die!"

:gets 1080p/60 TLoU remaster:

"I don't see a f*cking difference, I've been ripped off"

Tough Love guys, you have to set your expectations right or never be pleased. It's not a new game build from the ground up on this gen and it looks better than most cross-gen games thus far. I didn't ask for more.

There is definitely an improvement in the character models.
Joel might be easier to tell, not sure if it's a different frame but his face looks a bit different now. You can also notice the improved lighting around the hair and the eyes.

I am still confused as to why the ps3's shadows look better in that comparison when in every other comparison the ps4 shows a signigicant improvement. It has to be a bug then.

something is wrong with this game when you use flash light in dark places look at that bench when there is no direct light on its like its rendered at 320 x120 resolution and when you point the flash light everything goes back to normal

Stills are pretty silly to compare. Especially when 60FPS is one of the biggest upgrades from the original. We're handicapping the 60FPS benefits by this comparison on still shots alone.

Hmm, maybe it's a glitch? Have you tried switching to 30fps to see if that fixes it?

Seems like bounce lighting tech is a post-process shader thats running in very low res, so its causing heavy aliasing.

I got a ps3 screencap in the same location range. What is the effect people are talking about? Around the hands? Ps4 does seem to be missing it but maybe that location shouldn't have any?

Edit: might be some shadow ao effect.
Wishmaster92 I ll test this in 30 fps mode to see if its a glitch or not but its really distracting

Thanks for keeping us updated, if what KKRT00 says is true then 30fps mode shouldn't help.

I think this is a remnant of the original version--one of ND's techniques was to decrease LOD on things out of the light. I remember Ellie's face behaving the same way. They probably just gotta raise some values...

This is fucking disappointing. Why the hell did ND release the game like this, just delay
the thing by a couple months and fix all this shit. Other than the stuff pointed out in
these threads, who knows what else will crop up once the game is out.

I'll be picking this half-assed port when it's $15-$20 now. Maybe even a used copy.

Extremely disappointed.

Really?

Delay a game a few months because of a shadow?

Buy it cheap is one method.

Personally, I've decided I'll keep my preorder, and when it arrives, I shall bury it in the woods, with a small cross bearing the words "A Naughty Dog died, 1989 - 2014".
