TLOU Remastered: 30 fps option gives better shadow quality [Up: Comparison GIF in OP]

TLOU characters cast indirect shadows instead having screen space AO implementation (which are always just approximations). Also the contact shadow should be minimal/not visible in cases like that picture where there's a lot of light, most AO implementations ignore this and will give you thick contact shadows even when there's bright light.

No, because
1) GOW HD was not done by Santa Monica
2) The engine ND will use this gen is the same engine that was used in TLOU/Uncharted 1,2,3. Unlike GOW3's engine which was largely rewritten considering the massive changes in rendering techniques that came about with the 7th gen.
The engine is the same, but code works very differently, specially because Cell was a very unique CPU.

This is fucking disappointing. Why the hell did ND release the game like this, just delay
the thing by a couple months and fix all this shit. Other than the stuff pointed out in
these threads, who knows what else will crop up once the game is out.

I'll be picking this half-assed port when it's $15-$20 now. Maybe even a used copy.

Extremely disappointed.

You must have missed it when ND devs mentioned how hard it was to port this over to PS4, and the tweets where they mention that they are working long hours and weekends, choosing to miss time with their families in order to work on this game.

You may be disappointed with the end result...but "half-assed" it is not, and is pretty insulting. No one is forcing you to buy it day one, pay however much you think it's worth.

If this isn't sarcasm then this the most disgraceful gaming related post I've read holy shit

Really?

Delay a game a few months because of a shadow?

Because of lighting effects that affect many scenes. But keep playing dumb and pretending the example used is the only specific instance where this happens.

How many free passes should we give them on this game? What's the next graphical hitch we are going to find?

Keep in mind ND themselves didn't want to show any gameplay ahead of release. Now we are finding out why.

I love the game and the developer's previous efforts as much as the next guy, but this "remaster" is something else...

He's dead serious and for some reason he's ignored every single positive screen and impression from people who have the game and is only commenting on the rare bad ones.

Yikes at those earlier screenshots, the missing? AO and the weird flashlight shadow glitches...

Hopefully they are aware of this and will patch it ASAP.

I won't be able to play it anyways until the weekend, so get to it ND!

yep he's the guy that was asking for Z-fighting to be fixed in a day 1 patch the first time we ever saw video footage

You guys are insane. Personally, I can't wait for my copy to be delivered. It'll be first time playing and I'm sure that I'm gonna have one helluva time.

Exactly! Every time I check up on this thread, the issues getting pointed out are
pretty blatant. The images posted clearly show something is messed up with texture
resolution when there isn't light cast on them. Add this to the shadows missing when
they were present in the PS3 version, who knows what else they managed to screw up
throughout the whole game.

Disappointment is an understatement.

Did ND say they will continue to patch this game after release day?

I don't care how hard anyone worked. All I care about is the product and the end result. I am a consumer. This port is half assed.

I'm pretty sure they said they'll continue patching until all the shadows are gone

And since then other issues have cropped up. I don't think asking for a patches to fix this
shit is out of line or unusual.

-Z-fighting
-Aliasing
-Missing shadows
-Messed up textures
-AO issues

Patches would be more than welcomed.

Whoa. That variable resolution thing is really weird.
At first I thought it had to be some weird post effect that used a really tiny framebuffer, but it actually looks more like it's the primary render target that's been scaled down.

Optimization to save gpu cycles by rendering what's inside the flashlight cone in full res, and rendering everything else at a much lower one?

They did embargo reviews and such for tomorrow because of patch contents. Several of these issues could be fixed by release.

They haven't explicitly said, but they have to patch at some point for the two new MP maps coming sometime in the future.

Are people really losing their shit over this?

I'm sure you and many others will enjoy the game. But this is not the remaster many previous owners were hoping for.

Add to that Naughty Dog's secrecy on gameplay footage before release.

Given it was made with the PS3 in mind originally, that will always be the case, unless you're talking about a full remake and not a port.

Do you expect the game to be perfect i can understand some issue but aliasing and messed up textures you can find in any game.

It really isn't. You want to look at a half assed port? Go check out the Ratchet and Jak collections and numerous other examples of games that were sub res and couldn't hit 30fps, much less 60.

The community as a whole has got to stop freaking out over every little thing. The hyperbole and complaining and diva attitude over every single thing is grating.

This needed to be said! It's gotten ridiculous! Every game thread is instant extreme freak out! It's becoming like Fox News around here!

A text convo I had with a friend this morning

Him: after seeing that gif I'm definitely going 30
Me: oh christ
Him: the shadows look twice as good dude. come on
Me: the framerate at 60 is twice as good...
Him: i see what you're saying but I notice shadows in games more than framerate honestly
Him: and i rarely play games at 60 anyway
Me: i'm done with this. i'm just done.

More than likely they will patch this. Nothing major.

Then the ps4 is weak. Which do you prefer?

You can't blame someone who doesn't know the difference, most console games aren't 60fps. If he wants better shadows and doesn't care about 60fps, thats his prerogative. He can enjoy the game the way he deems fit.

Then the ps4 is weak. Which do you prefer?

I prefer we have a thoughtful discourse instead of a hyperbolic one.

If I re-buy this game, it will be for the 60fps. I know what the game looks like already, but I don't know how it runs on 60fps. Also, I play a game to play it, not to stand around and find the best looking shot possible. Gameplay > visuals, especially when the visuals are already great.

I agree. This certainly isn't what I expected, hence my disdain towards this port right now.
It's my fault for getting caught up in the ND hype lol. As a result of the past few days,
I will be seriously critical of anything ND says about Uncharted 4.

Unbelievable, for me personally, how this went from a must-buy to a used purchase.

I refuse to believe some of the people in this thread exist IRL. I've never met a single gamer in the real world as irrational, entitled, and ignorant as some of the responses in this thread.

The shadow stuff isn't a huge deal to me, it doesn't look better enough to sacrifice the frame rate.

Expectations are not Naughty Dog's problem, they're yours. They've sold 7 million copies of this game already, they'll probably sell a few million more. They've won.

Everyone should be disappointed because clearly, this game had either no QC budget or not enough. The graphical glitches missed are not something one should expect from Naughty Dog.
