Top Gun: Maverick impressions from CinemaCon.

Are you guys going to see this movie?

Yeah, I'm waiting for the "testosterone laden ode to toxic Masculinity" counter punch because I don't see how you make a Top Gun film in the style of the first one and no one makes that comment today.

Conversely, you couldn't make a movie with all the modern sensibilities and not have some one call it a SJW woke fest either.

Though of anyone can walk that tightrope suspended over the flaming pits of hell, it's the Cruise missile :p

John Campea said it's better, in his opinion, than the original. He came out the screening BEAMING about it! I'll go see it!

Additionally ...

Tropic Thunder, Mission Impossible, The Last Samurai, Born on the Fourth of July, Collateral, Minority Report, War of the Worlds, Jerry Maguire ...

His total filmography is bonkers

The OG Top Gun was gay as fuck, proper homoerotic. The sequel will be fine doubling down on that and still not break canon.
What do you think I was referring to when I said "toxic Masculinity"????

If it's gonna be gay, at least let it be lumberjack swole 2% body fat glistening muscles in the sun gay :p

The way the volleyball scene is immediately followed by a sex scene is just *chefs kiss*

They knew what they were doing :)

No, I can't remember any movie with Tom Cruise that has been good. The man is a terrible actor. Nicholas Cage at least has a sense of humor about it.

Rain Man, Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, Days of Thunder, Interview with a Vampire...

Legend, Edge of Tomorrow, A few good Men, Top Gun. He's been in more good movies than 99 percent of actors.

Tom Cruise annoys the hell out of me but has been in a lot of good movies.

Good movies not yet mentioned are Cocktail and Vanilla Sky. The Firm isnt a great movie but also not a bad one either. Also consider the rest of the MI movies even if not as good as part 1.

Four Rooms

Strange I just rewatched this movie last year I dont remember this scene. Maybe I fell asleep lol.

EDIT - The description says From Sleep with me (1994) directed by Rory Kelly

Tom Cruise can also run without looking like a total dork, which is a very rare thing in hollywood.

Preview impressions are almost always overly positive but yeah, we're off to the IMAX for this one.

Funny you mention Cocktail as a good Tom Cruise film. Personally, I love Cocktail and think it's a decent 80s cheese flick, but the film was ripped apart by critics when it was originally released. Its RT score is an unbelievable 7%!

Can't remember the last movie I have seen in theaters but I'm definitely seeing this one. The non-cgi flying shots are worth the price alone. And Tom Cruise is weird as fuck but he knows how to make movies.

Admittedly I haven't seen it in probably 15 years but I recall it being good.

I've not seen Days of Thunder. Some of those movies were good despite Cruise's terrible acting. Rain Man shined because of Hoffman.. Magnolia also because of Hoffman.

Eyes Wide Shut wasn't good. Thankfully, Kubrick died before they spliced together that incomprehensible piece of shit.

It's good that these archetypical boomer movie stars are no longer bankable. Cinema has improved vastly because of it.

Why do these early twitter movie impressions always read like ad copy written by the studio?

Early impressions for Morbius weren't that positive... Nor were they for a lot of other movies ... BvS was pretty positive but they saw the Ultimate cut... Not the theatrical.

because the studio gives them recommended talking points.

I used to get invites to movies when I was at my former workplace and reviewed movies. I gave a couple bad reviews and STILL got invited back for other movies. So no, that's false.

I've seen evidence of it happening, sure it's not 100% of the time but influencers have been guided in the past.
