Top Gun: Maverick impressions from CinemaCon.

just realized Jennifer Connely is playing THAT Penny Benjamin....lo

"He told me all about the time you went ballistic with Penny Benjamin."- Carole Bradshaw to Maverick

(military, slang) for a powered, usually guided missile or other aerial vehicle to travel on an unguided or ballistic trajectory, having lost power, control or guidance quotations

I think most missiles (air to air ones anyway) will run out of fuel and sorta glide in to their targets right before impact as part of their normal operation, thus "going ballistic" is slang for "going all the way" /fucking.

At least that's how I always interpreted that quote. The idea that it means a loss of control/crash and burn breakup is an new take for me.

Please telle there is at least one scene of firing the F18 nose cannon. That they never actually go to guns is one of the only flaws of Top Gun.

That has to be the best sequel ever made.

Agreed. Had an awesome experience. Great story, far-fetched, but it's Hollywood. If you can suspend disbelief for 2 hours, you'll have a fun ride. Even down to the way they handled Val Kilmer, so impressed.

And it just bubbled up into my thinking who Penny actually is. Woven in like a champ. So well done.

Who Penny actually is? Was the character in the first movie?

Likely from children who weren’t old enough to appreciate / not even born seeing what this movie did at the time.

I was old enough, hated heartthrob 80's Cruise period. Anyway, grew up, got laid, nostalgia kicked in. OG Top is awesome and gay overtones missed at the time were flipping the bird at women fawning for him. I own it on 3D Blu ray as well.

Saw it.

Eh. Frankly I’m getting a bit tired of these movies being so beholdened to their legacies that they suffer from creative bankruptcy at worst, stagnation at best. Obligatory opening (which I actually enjoyed purely on a nostalgia basis….same font even, and they fixed the “insure” grammatical error of the original intro text), jacket, motorbike, racing the plane, “great balls of fire” played by Goose’s son, hard deck scoldings, flashbacks. I mean, Christ. I know people want Top Gun, but there’s a line to tread.

Even much of the flying scenes, which I was hoping would redeem it, were borderline incoherent, there for nothing more than pretenses for “Hey, wouldn’t this be a cool shot with fighter jets!” rather than actually serving narrative flow and consistency to the action and plot. The aerial scenes in the original I found far superior in scripting, framing, and conveyance of continuity, not to mention plausibility.

Though I must be missing something, as everyone adores this. I found it not a bad film, but far inferior to the original. I was not impressed.

"Son, your ego is writing checks your body can't cash. You've been busted. You lost your qualifications as section leader three times. Put in hack twice by me, with a history of high speed passes over five air control towers and one admiral's daughter"

Goose to Mav: "Penny Benjamin?"

I can't quite decide which movie did a better job at being a superior sequel to a classic movie - this or Blade Runner 2049.

I guess it's just a matter of preference. What matters is that this movie kicks ass and I was literally smiling the second the opening credits started. Now THAT is how you make a sequel that plays into nostalgia but also manages to be a strong follow up that builds upon the original in a meaningful and satisfying way.

Holy shit, I'm still trying to contain my hard-on.

Jennifer Connelly in her 30's + 40's is more attractive than pudge faced Jennifer Connelly in her late teens and early 20's.

Why are you booing me? You know I'm right.
Jennifer connelly has never STOPPED being a bombshell. Whatever she is doing is what all the other actresses (and not a few actors... Zac Efron) are trying and failing to do.

We really gotta start making our actors sign "no plastic surgery" contracts so we can appreciate aging again.

Seeing it tomorrow, can’t wait..

The amount of shitting on the first one in this thread is really the ultimate cringe. Likely from children who weren’t old enough to appreciate / not even born seeing what this movie did at the time. There is a reason the character hasn’t even skipped a beat after 35 years….

I was 21 when Top Gun came out but had never seen it till yesterday. It was slickly made, but there was barely a plot and I found the aerial action hard to follow. It's easy to see why Top Gun made Cruise a bonafide moviestar, but the best thing about the movie was the music: Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone", "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin ... I even got the "Count Three and Pray" LP from the band Berlin that had their biggest hit single, but in my opinion that song is the weakest track on "Count Three and Pray". It's a damn shame that album isn't on Spotify, but you can listen to it (for now) on Youtube.

Come now, the plot is fine. Mav is a cocky pilot living in the shadow of his father. He goes.to.Top Gun, learns of his deficits through the death of his RIO and theentoring if Viper and Iceman, then comes back in the end to be a better pilot and save the day.

It's a personal journey.

Plus at the time there was NOTHING like it. We had a lot of WW2 real footage shows, but nothing showing modern aircraft carrier ops and jets. The film was such a success because it was a peek into that experience.

Watched those clips. I saw the first one a week before the second one came out. I somehow missed that.

I’m so hyped to see this tomorrow, especially because it’ll be a first-date with this girl I’m really into I matched with via online dating. She loves the original too and is hyped for the sequel as well.

Hope tomorrow will be a memorable day for multiple reasons… 🤞
Good luck man 😏

Just remember when the credits roll, lean over and whisper in her ear "Take me to bed or lose me forever". I figure you have a 50% shot of that working.
