Top Gun: Maverick impressions from CinemaCon.

It's a 9/10 that FEELS like a 10/10.
That's actually spot on in my case.

Sure, if I analyze it, and compare it to established film masterpieces, would it be a 10? Probably not. I'm sure I could find reason to take it down a peg.

But as it was stated earlier by @Thaedolus, if judged on the basis of what it set out to achieve, it's a clear and resounding success.

Coming from a huge fan of Top Gun as a kid (I wore out the friggin VHS tape I had of it from watching it so many times), as a complete cinematic experience, this was the best time I had at the theater that I can remember.

And if that doesn't warrant a 10/10, I don't know what does.

You guys must be really starved for films or have had your brains battered by cookie-cutter Disney for the last ten years. I enjoyed it but it's hardly a 10/10.

Can you blame them? With how terrible movies are nowadays people are desperate for some good 90's style movie where the characters are likeable and interesting while the action complements the movie instead of being the only thing of value in it. People are getting tired of the Marvel crap and most of them don't even realize it.

As someone who hated the first movie, I'm a huge fan of the new Top Gun. I'm happy that it's done over a billion dollars. Much much better than Cruises cookie cutter Mission Impossible franchise. Top Gun Maverick was much more memorable and had a lot more heart than any of his recent work
And I am very pleased with the effort that Tom Cruise makes in his movies, he deserves it.

And I'm glad Top Gun Maverick is a great movie, not like Lightyear's crap.

Well it is way better than Lightyear. As for Tom Cruise effort in the movies he makes, it doesn't really matter to me when most of his recent stuff has been crap.

How can you even compare Lightyear and Maverick? What the?

In a nutshell Maverick is a bog standard action film but it's executed so damn perfectly well it's easily a 10/10 film for me.
Quite obviously Lightyear can't compete and not many movies can. Maverick will probably be the best action movie of the year and Paramount were smart to wait for the cinema release. Imagine if they agreed to that Netflix payday to have it streamed, they would have lost so much money.

Ended my 7 year movie theater drought by seeing Top Gun: Maverick last night. Wife and I were very happy. Really hit the marks and also an incredible achievement with the flight scenes. Anyway, I still remember seeing the first in the movie theater back in '86 so this felt right.

Earlier this month TGM broke into the Top 10 highest Domestic grossing films.

As of today according to boxoffice mojo it is currently (8/19/22 morning) sitting at $676,653,036 meaning it has surpassed Avengers Infinity War for the No. 6 spot with Black Panther ahead of it at $700.4 million.

Who could have ever thought it'd do this well?

Not that surprising tbh.
  • Very popular original film
  • Decades since the last and only film
  • Popular lead actor (legend even) + some of the co-stars
  • No films like it for... well since the original really
  • Patriotic film in the US (popular elsewhere, but this is a big thing in the US) at a time it really needs it
  • One of those 'best seen at a cinema' films
  • A film that's enjoyable to rewatch
  • Post pandemic
  • Heavy marketing
  • Superbly made
  • Just plain good, honest action, with minimal fluff

I pre-ordered the 2-movie 4K HD BluRay pack, thinking it was coming out this month.

Found out yesterday the physical release isn't until Nov.1.

Wife and I saw it a week ago and it’s utterly fantastic. Literally topped my expectations and given all the hype those sky high (pun intended). Great film

Jennifer Connelly is timeless too

So you are saying it isn’t surprising that every single possible thing that worked in its favour happened? Ok, sure.

Ummm, yes? That tends to be how things in favour of something work.

Practical effects in camera wherever possible absolutely destroys cgi every time. Nolan understands this. So does this movie.

Great flick…and an awesome third act. Though I feel like you have to be a yank to truly love it, especially with all the jingoistic stuff. Look at our MASSIVE FLAG EVERYBODY 😂

Pretty damn stunning aerial work though. And that mad old bastard continues to be a weird fucking force of nature.

Kilmer’s scene carried a lot of emotional weight, given his illness.

Zimmer basically just reusing The Dark Knight soundtrack for everything he does now.

Bit chickenshit to deliberately not mention who the enemy is though. Felt dumb to not have it.

Head and shoulders above, and a massive breath of fresh air from, the endless Marvel factory line of CG lightweight boredom.

Agreed but, as I recall, it's pretty obviously Russians. Weren't they chasing Maverick & Rooster around in a Hind helicopter? It's either Russian or ex-Soviet Bloc, most of which are NATO now.

Came back from watching it and it's absolutely fantastic, easily better than the first movie. My favourite scene had to be the dogfight training, I smiled like a child when I heard The Who's "Yeahhhhh!!!" come on. Gave me flashbacks to the CSI: Miami compilation on Youtube:

The closest is Iran. Russians don't fly or ever flew F-14s, Iran did. Also Iran is trying to get nukes. Russia of course not.
The landscape and 5th generation fighters were pointing to Russia though, yes.

I guarantee if the film had been made after the invasion of Ukraine it would have definitely been the Russians. But they deliberately didn’t state who the bad guys were, simply because they wanted to sell the movie in those territories, which is kinda lame, story wise.

Not surprising? Cmon man, absolutely no one inside or outside the industry predicted it would do this well. It's done exceedingly well and truly deserves it.

It would have done decent business anyway, as it’s a very well crafted film, but the fact it’s complete anathema to the non stop, bloated, over complicated, CGI ridden flicks that Disney keep putting out, is what probably put it over the top at the box office.

The Connely parts were a bit flat, they wanted Cruise to have a love story like last time, but it wasn't developed, just forcefully inserted. And the bar scenes are a bit corny. Also, of course, a bit comically convenient that Gooses's kid was there.

But I didn't expect the story around Cruise still suffering from the Goose issue from the first film, it gave the film some heart, and then the flying scenes are absolutely mad. It looks incredibly cool. I also liked how the last 20 minutes didn't just follow a standard plot.

It still has that vibe from the first film, the music, the sun going down and the orange sky, the motorcycle, the jacket, it still works.

Watching the flying scenes though highlights so much of the effect problems a lot of movies have, where it's too little thought put into it, it's like a backdrop, here though, the effects were used as a boon, something that greatly enhanced the film.

A frankly ridiculous amount of it was done in camera with little to no effects work.

Makes a lot of other movies look like absolute ass in terms of effort.

As an American while I noticed the flag I never thought twice about the size until now. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It must've been too small for us...

I have to know how they did the F-14 scenes as outside Iran there are no more capable of flight. If it was CGI then it was some of the best CGI work ever to the point where I feel they had to have made some oversized RC F-14 to film.

That splitting the throttles scene was the bit where I stared open gaped.

In looking this topic up, I came across this: https://www.upi.com/Archives/1985/11/20/Iran-gave-the-Soviet-Union-US-F-14-Tomcat-and/2779501310800/

Not trying to argue, or even debate this point, since I honestly know nothing about it. But it doesn't seem much of a leap to me for Russia to get their hands on one if Iran had them, since they're strategic and military allies. Anyway, thought you might find it interesting.

Finally saw it. I got all those same feels as the first film. Hell, this was better than the original. That's such a rare thing to say. This was T2 to Terminator levels of good. I really fucking dug this. Gonna buy this one for sure. This film deserves multiple viewings. Also, gay beach football >> gay beach volleyball. LOL!

I was hoping for a Tom Cruise & old sexy and fat Kelly McGillis sex scene but I knew they wouldn't have the guts 😀

Tom Cruise GIF by Top Gun

It's scenes like this that really blow my mind. Especially the one towards the end where the dudes basically does a flip over the missile.

Finally saw it.
Had my dad over to watch it and we both really enjoyed it.

It's visually spectacular, probably the bet mix of practical and digital effects since Fury Road, consistently fun to watch, has a nice balance of callbacks to the original while telling a compelling new story and damn, it's just nice having and old character come back and still be fun, and likeable and cool instead of sad and depressed.

On the negative side I agree the romantic interest part felt flat and I think the end part could have been done better.

The whole movie is about training this new group of pilots but then they just have Maverick lead them in the end. Would have liked it better if the team he trains actually pulls it off and then he flies in to save them from some unexpected danger or something like that.
Also didn't like how you never really see them improve. No one can pull it off, then we see Maverick do it, which we already assumed he could, then it's just skips to them going on the mission

But overall a solid 8/10 IMO

Holy shit what a movie , I was blown away. Watched it at home with a atmos setup, it was splendid , probably one of the best movies I saw in the last 10 years, it had everything. I think they really benefited from the extra 2 years working on it.

Watched this last night and I'm kinda shocked at the overwhelmingly positive responses to this movie. Visual spectacle aside [and it truly is a spectacle] It is not only very shallow filled with incredibly obnoxious characters, it is goofy bordering on parody and worst of all - boring.

I really wasn't digging the insane amount of Goose stuff. I expected there be some homages but Jesus, the entire movie revolves around Goose. You're telling me that after 30 years Maverick still has a shrine of Goose where he stares at pictures of Goose every day? The son with the 1:1 identical hair, moustache and Hawaii shirt? It was so on the nose it was absurd. The whole point of the first movie was Maverick overcoming his guilt, getting to terms with the death of Goose and emerging a better man. And yet here we are 30 years later and he's still tormented.

And the F-14 heist was ridiculous, movie turned into a buddy comedy. As soon as that bit started I was mentally checked out.

6/10 for the amazing visuals and airplane stunts, but pretty much nothing else.

I've been holding out - been so busy this summer, and my favorite nearby cinema closed down permanently.
Anyhow, I was looking for the ticket a couple weeks ago and, it turns out it's available for purchase... so I purchased it and watched with my child who also saw original Top Gun not too long ago with me.

It did have some moments of let downs or out-of-character like old buddy movie type moment in the end or whatnot... but I seriously enjoyed whole thing. Serious parts, goof and all. Wasn't even much of fan of original Top Gun to be honest - I can't quite nail it - but it had some of those special old movie feel. Perhaps it's straightforward storytelling that's increasingly harder to find these days... but I genuinely had great time watching it. Perhaps it's a sign that I'm getting old, but no regrets. :)

This movie is on an insane run. It's still playing in IMAX over here in NL. Probably good news for the next Mission Impossible.

It was a very tribute kinda movie, with a lot of similar scenes. And yeah even some characters looked out of the 80s.

I’m ashamed I didn’t watch it on theaters..

But oled + sonos system was not bad

Visuals were great, but the atmos mix was just ok.
